Good job, guys. To all the negative Nellies commenting here, the drum would typically sound like that back in those days. I don't think this particular drum even has snare strands installed. Yeah sure, he might be able to tighten the ropes a bit, but who cares really? THIS is how they sounded a couple hundred years ago.
Whatever criticism people might level at them, the fact is that most drummers and fifers during the Napoleonic wars would have sounded very much like this. Few of them were skilled musicians, most could probably not read sheet music and had to learn it by rote from another musician. It is *Field Music* after all, and not a band.
There are drums from 18th century with snares installed in museums. It's just that not every drum had these. And they were made of twisted gut, not metal strings like today. So they had to sound a bit different.
Me daughter just got a Fife for her birthday today, she's surprisingly good at the first and last tunes. I don't think she's ever heard either before, but I'm a fan of traditional and martial music... A year of flute probably helped with that. Excellent job, as a reenactor, I love having the right gear with the right costuming and music.

The second tune is named "Lilliburlero" for english people or "Marche du Prince d'Orange" for french people. Another version for fifes and drums here: ua-cam.com/video/eYHKH3NGapU/v-deo.html And a lot of ressources about french fifes and drums on "Fifres et tambours de Fréjus" youtube channel.
This is pretty late, but if you want a good cheap fife to start on, I recommend you check out beafifer.com. You can get a very nice sounding plastic fife through them for $10
Sorry for the late response. Thanks :) It's a Napoleonic greatcoat as used by the Dutch-Belgians. I assume it is indeed strictly of that period, but I'm not an expert on patterns and such, so I can't tell you much more I'm afraid. Cheers.
People complaining about drums, the drums sound accurate to my knowledge. Remember everything always sounds different on camera. Also, some interesting variations on The Girl I Left Behind Me and British Grenadiers. Never heard them before, keeps it interesting.
@cartoonman12345 I don't know where the drum originally came from, because he got it from our re-enactment unit; but I'm planning to buy one myself. I suggest you google "cooperman fife drum" and "military heritage drum" to help you on your way
hehe thanks Cumbas, we actually know some french pieces (but from the early to mid 1700's) but we have to practice more. If you to hear french imperial music from us you'll have to wait quite some time but who knows ;-) Away with Bonaparte! ;-p
Never, not even over my cold dead body will you ever hear me shout "Vive L'empereur!"! Down with Boney!Leve de Koning!Vive Le Roi! ;-D But I will accept your music, one must learn to know his enemies ;-) + I hope to put more Dutch(-Belgian) marches on UA-cam. Because they're really rarely heard of on the internet. Bien à vous, camarade

Martin Hartley yeah and if they were skilled it would be a waste cuz they could have easily die
@@hartleymartin They would still have chosen men with rhythm though. This drummer has none.
@@MadCapMag Well to be fair most soldiers didn’t have a metronome

No. They were usually older men and well trained.
@@nikolairostov3326 drummers were, but fifes were usually younger boys
