- In this video we show you the only real fix for the leaky plastic oil pans on the 2nd Gen 3.5L Ecoboost Engines.
The Fix:
Part 1
• 2017-2018 Ford F-150 3...
Part 2
• 2017-2018 Ford F-150 3... - Авто та транспорт
Imagine if it just came from the factory with an aluminum pan already
Now, that's just crazy talk! Why would they want to do something like that?
@@Crusty_Otter you’re right. Makes too much sense lol
only in the land of make believe 😂
The raptor engine does
@@maverick12916They'll fix this in a future revision, rest assured.😂
It's Ford excellence in engineering it allows oil to leak from the pan as you're driving and the wind helps disperse it evenly across the frame preventing it from rusting😅
British rustproofing
Say No, to plastic engine parts.
Looks like trans is about to drop out.
no
apparently composite oil pans are popular on big rigs, and don't have this issue.
Planned obsolescence claims another victim. They should all be sued out of existence!
Stop and think about the abject stupidity of what you just suggested.
Boy you got that right
The ONLY real fix is the most expensive option...that Ford should have done in the first place. Really, who thinks a plastic oil pan is a good idea?
Learning from BMW engineers
Garbage plastic parts. Reminds me of the thermostat housing on my Ranger 4.0l. Went through the stock one and two plastic replacements before I finally put an aluminum one on it. Haven't had a problem since.
Same engine on the Ford mustang had the same issue. Replaced it with a aluminum aftermarket version and didn't have anymore problems.
Plastic thermostat housing? WTF?
Same with plastic intake manifolds
Why something like this not a mandatory recall is beyond comprehension. Manufacturers should be held accountable for producing trash!!
Thanks for helping us keep our Ford's maintained. ❤❤❤❤❤
Late 90s early 2000s was the pinnacle of the big 3 reliability.
Tell that to my Ford Taurus
@@davidhelms-ml3ewYou beat me to it, my 97 Taurus from brand new had nothing but electrical issues.
GM stuff from that era was bulletproof. SO many Buicks from that time period still beating around.
The only thing I see from the 90s in my area is f250s and up and similar for Chevy. And a few old crown vics.
Agree in my experience. 2004 Expedition 5.4 2v 280,000+ miles with no major issues.
So nice Ford could make available a correct aluminum oil pan for the oem factory installed subpar plastic leakers. Now.. to go purchase one.
It's looking bad when Ford is using plastic oil pans while even penny pinching GM is using metal oil pans on their trucks. W. T. F.
I'm a true ford fan, but some of the stuff that they do is crazy 😂😂
It isn't crazy, it's a form of theft. They are squeezing their customers for more money. Deliberately designing their cars to be more and more disposable.
Certainly, Ford is not the only ones pulling this crap, but they sure are one of the worst.
I'm a Ford fan, too. But Man, some of this stuff is ridiculous! It's all about saving on production costs. I remember back in the 1980's a few makes and models started getting plastic radiators. Downsizing, lighter weight, cheaper quality construction and parts. And the beat goes on to this day--only worse.
I’m not a Ford fan and I’m glad I’m not
@BruceBiazzo-qp1rh The oil pump drive belt inside the pan (1.0-1.3) takes the cake. Shows they could care less.
We have a 20 and 21 Explorer ST with 3.0L TTGDI we went thru 2 plastic pans, 1 each I'm glad I bought extended warranties.
We have a 21 ST, I will have to keep an eye on it. This is why I bit the bullet and got the 8 yr 125k warranty
FordTechMakuloco is a super technician. Knows a lot.
I’m afraid to take off my shields now. If I see mine is leaking, I would 100% do this fix.
I'm thinking that the reason the shields are installed on the trucks is to mask this issue until the truck is out of the warranty.
@@markk3652 the engine diaper
There should be a recall on these since Ford knows this is a problem. Anyone know what the cost of this upgrade would be?
There is a tsb
@todds5956 and they will give you a new plastic lower pan
@@todds5956what's a tsb?
@@mddunlap03at what cost?
They will never do a recall for non-safety design failures.
Plastic oil pan. What are they thinking! SMH
It ain't just a Ford thing...all manfs. are doing it...even class 8 semis..
Too much sealant. And you are so right and always are
Glad I bought a Chevy Silverado 12 years ago with the cheap iron 4.3. No issues and it’s straightforward to fix.
Had to replace our entire fleet
Whichever Ford engineers or management that approved "plastic oil pan" needs to be relieved of their jobs...
Everytime I hear folks say they like the gen 2 or gen 3 3.5L EcoBoost over the gen 1, I just say why??? Love my gen 1, no phaser issues, already has the aluminum pan... no issues with mine at 150K miles. I don't baby it either.
Dorman step up! Give us a stamped steel with a good gasket or aluminum with seal groove and rubber perimeter seal to fit where thenplastic was used. Nothing wrong with the upper pan and no need for the extra work and labor.
what ever you say boss....you are the best!
I can't wait for the plastic cylinder heads!
Gotta love those Ford Eco-booms.
Hahaha why did this look like a video game or a simulator of a car undercarriage at first?? Am i going crazy? Lol
Wide angle.
I cant believe Ford charges upwards of 90 grand for a new F150 and it comes with a plastic oil pan..
Ford out here making sure techs stay busy
Aluminium pan leaks too just ask GM
Can't say thank you enough. Leased a 2013 SHO and was planning to keep it. But you were saying that things were a bit fishy with the engine.
Ok, plastic oil pan, impressive. What next plastic valve train?
Makes good sense.
I’m babying mine.Hope it holds together
My Fiat has a one piece main bearing cover that bolts to the bock. There are no separate bearing caps. Sump pan fits beneath. It’s just ordinary pressed steel that bends when you lever it off the RTV sealant. No leaks until the pan rusts out but new pans are $25. Strong, reliable and cheap to fix.
FIAT? 🤣
I learned a great lesson with Permatex silicone. The VW 2.5 is a 5 cylinder and has 2 heads (wtf?). In between the 2 heads was a bad oil leak on the back side of the motor. I would have to pull the upper head off which required removing the timing chain. That is way beyond my capabilities. Told the customer I can put like 3 layers of RTV on the outside over 2 days and hope for the best. It has been 4.5 months and still no leaks from that $15 fix 😂😂😂
The red stuff?
Thanks for the great info and advice
Love your style. Always clean and Organized. You’ve Helped me a lot these last 2 1/2 years for me
The only real picture to destroy and put it in the yard😢
Can you tell me what years this affects and if Ford corrected the problem?
Let me see… hot engine, hot engine oil and plastic oil pan. I’m not a engineer but I did sleep at a Howard Johnson’s last night
Plastic? Who thought that was a good idea ffs.
That is way too much sealant 😅😂
Why I love my first gen! Don’t have this crap to deal with!
Does anybody have part numbers?
So it’s 2024. Space rockets, internet, global social media, AI chat bot. And we can’t stick the one metal thingy to the other metal thingy without it leaking. Got it
This should be a recall item fixed by Ford! Don't let them get away with this terrible part that won't work on on their 3.5 ecoboost! Class Action will get the fix repaired!
Can't any mfg take oil retention seriously? Speaking as a tech that has replaced HUNDREDS of Chrysler 'oil filter adaptors'...😅
Curious as to what causes the plastic pan to leak; is it microcracks, does the plastic warp under heat and stress, or does the plastic just not make a good seal around the bolt holes?
I wish they made an aluminum pan for the 2.7. I just hate plastic
Which generation coyote 5.0 would you say is the best and most reliable? I like my gen1 & gen2
15-17
@@FordTechMakuloco and how about the chassis gen 1 - 2 - 3?
When crayon eaters become engineers......
6.7s have the same issue
My favorite part is when we’re doing a cdf or rebuild & on top the pan is pouring oil & they decline the pan 😂
Okay well add 6hrs to the labor when you finally “need” it 😂😂 like alright cool, extra $300 now, or an extra $1,000 later.
Wonder if it's a misapplication of the sealant. Most the time no one waits the 1 hour in the instructions before torquing it down. It's not unusual for the factory to install things wrong
You cant use regular rtv on the plastic pans you have to use a promoter to help bound it to the aluminum
Yes I am aware
Do they make an aluminum oil pan for a 2.7
I didn't know they had aluminum pans! I already changed mine. Damn it
Ya I can’t do that when it’s under warranty
Dude, that plastic looks like the plastic frame from my WPL C24 lmao. Must be exactly the same
Does the aluminum pan come with the drain plug ON THE BOTTOM where it should be? Wonder what genius said, let's put it on the side so it makes a huge mess!
This should be a factory recall for the price they charge for a new vehicle 😂
Trade trade trade. Loved the towing power of my 3.5eb but couldnt deal with all the problems. I dont know whats better though
Hey man. I just bought a 3.5. You got link for that pan??? I'm probably gonna need to get one soon 😅😅😅
Same here, who makes it?
I have an entire video detailing the procedure and the part list. You must replace the pickup, pan and oil dipstick.
@FordTechMakuloco gonna have to go find that now. Thank you! I wanna keep this thing running 🥲 I want it to be one of those 400k eco boosts not a 150k one 😂
What years & models have the plastic pan ?
The real fix is to trade it in for anything else. Even Toyota as much as that hurts to say.
That missing Bell housing bolt is funny
This pan was ready to come out, the trans was unbolted and slid back 5mm already as shown. Now do you get it?
You have to pull the transmission back to pull the oil pan
yup
@@FordTechMakuloco that blows I hated doing a water pump on a 460 because I had to pull all the brackets that bugged me
Are you fucking kidding me, a plastic oil pan WTF? At least someone's making a metal replacement
Worse than that, my 2017 Fx4 "Off Road" has the same damned plastic oil pan - and it sits so low I still have to use ramps or jack stands just to change the oil. How is it any kind of "Off Road" package?
You know, if I was the manufacturer and my engineers come up with this idea.I think somebody might lose their job
Do they have aluminum oil pan replacements for the 2019-2024 Edge and Edge ST ?
Whats the least troublesome f-150 engine? The 2.7 ecoboost? I dont wamt to have to do the 3.5 fixes and the leaking 5.0 fixes
Some transmissions have plastic pans that don't have that problem. What's UP Ford? Is it too much of a loss for you to do the right thing and recall them?
The only real fix it to scrap it and make it into a toaster.
Toasters aren’t plastic.
Never had a problem with these pans leaking.
lol
Ford, right? Seriously, I think Henry is totally pissed at what has happened to his company and products.
I hope my 18 Taurus doesn't have one of these pans
My 2011 5.0 same thing
I just don't buy that ecoBoom garbage in the first place. Saves me all kinds of headache maintaining my F150.
Brian where do you recommend we get the pan from
I would like to Know too
Same here.
He has a video with all the information
Car companies just trying to cut cost
Plastic oil pans should be recalled. They're cheap for a reason and have no business being used on 45k+ vehicles.
Definitely too much RTV was used on that pan. See it all the time on all sorts of jobs.
Why is the trans missing bolts and looks to be seperated slightly from engine plate?
I've been a diesel technician for 21 years and I don't understand why anyone would buy a Ford. They're nothing but problems.
Why they pit plastic ? Next thing is exaust manifoul of plastic too
I didn’t know they were making oil pans from plastic. That’s too cheap!
Ford had a better idea…. Yet again. How to engineer future problems for the dealerships.
R T V...I JUST DO NOT TRUST THAT...GASKET WITH GASKA-CINCH...ZERO LEAKS....
Bad Idea for a major power train component! Along with the plastic transmission pans too! Just Bad!
Arent these newer cars supposed to be more environmentally friendly?
Everyone's getting played by the government and the automotive industry
Why would you put plastic for a engine fan or an intake. Just problems
Seems like engineers that design this gear think complicated makes sense.
What happened to keep it simple
Does the 2015 expedition have a plastic oil pan?
That type of cost saving idea not properly validated🤔😳😳
What year 3.5v6 have these pans?... looking at.buying a edge
With a 3.5 non turbo...is it.the ecoboost engines only that have these plastic pans?
I curse the evil swine that came up with plastic oil pans in cars.
Good luck they did that with my truck had to take back three dang times auto company’s are a joke anymore
What years are the ones leaking??? My uncle has a 2017 with over 150k I’ve got an 2018 with 66k is this something we should worry about any time soon???
How much is this fix? I think my 2018 has this issue
Just had mine swapped at the dealer for 2100 bucks
Question is where do you get the aluminum oil pan? From Ford? They would probably just laugh at you for asking.
Yes Ford it is the same pan used from 2011-2024.
