Hey Sheryl!! What a wonderful series of videos you have prepared for us I am so very grateful to have found you, you have no idea. I am a knitter and a crocheter but my real passion is for colours and yarn haha I never really knew how to just start hand-dying and up until now it seemed like a dream! I can now say that I am confident enough to get a notebook and write down the list of things I will need to buy and prepare to do my first batch of yarn dye. I love the way you share your knowledge, it felt like I was in your studio with you taking in each and every word you were saying! Love your combination of colours too. You are brill!! xxx
Thank you so much for this series. I just tried dyeing for the first time and it was SO fun - and you were the perfect guide to take me through it and teach what I needed. Thank you!
You are an excellent instructor and your dye studio looks spacious and well organized. I am imagining knitting a sweater with those deep jewel tones. Thank you ☺️
Just like someone else said here, i probably will never dye my own yarn, but i enjoyed so much watching your process of yarn dyeing. I learned a lot from these videos! Thank you for all you do for us crafters 🤩💐
This was a phenomenal series! I learned so much and am going to give it a go I think! You’ve given me confidence whether I should have it is to be seen 😂
I'm so glad you're going to give it a go. Absolutely you should be confident. Go for it, have fun and remember that even mistakes are an opportunity to learn.
Thank you soooo much for the GREAT information!! I've just gotten back into spinning and have all this lovely but boring WHITE yarn! Your format is perfect and the added text on the screen if very helpful. Also, you mention things that can go wrong and tips to address those things. Please keep making videos!

Hi Sheryl. Me again. Could you please tell me which video could help me with the following. I want to dye 1 skein a solid colour. It’s app 100g. I’ve got a restaurant pan so I’m not worried about that but I also have a pot. Is there a video I can see to figure out the mordant amount of water and dye stock. As my yarn is 100g of weight I’m assuming I need 100 ml of dye. I usually put 1 gr dye in 100 ml water. I’m not sure how much mordant and whether I repeat the dye and mordant twice. I believe you mentioned something about the mordant being slow. I don’t know as to whether or not I should hear my pan while «”massaging” the yarn in the colour b4 adding the mordant. I’m 71 yes young and love dying yarns lol. Thank you for any info. I don’t mine looking at another video for my answers if you’ll point me in the right direction. Have a great day. Francine.
I'm not sure what you mean about the mordant amount of water but I have a video on how I mix my dye stock. It's part of the Basics of Yarn Dyeing series titled DYE. As far as the amount of dye remember that the formula I gave is to produce an over saturated colour because that is my taste. You can use my measurements as a starting point but you will still need to experiment and see what works for you. Depending on the depth of shade you're going for you may find you need less or more dye. If you're not sure how the dye will perform start with less, you can always add more dye but it doesn't work the other way around.
Thank you so much for this information. I'm planning on dying some mulberry silk solid black (I know, I know - but I need black to ply with a hand painted silk brick I've spun!) And this really helps as I was panicking about how to get an even strike with solid black. At least now I know I've got a chance at getting the solid colour I need! You're a star 😁
Beautiful.. I'm looking to match a few skeins with the Garden Party skeins that I recently received. Your yarn in even more beautiful in person.. Looking forward to purchasing more
Thanks so much for sharing. I love your color ways and plan on trying some of your methods on fiber for spinning 🥰 Quick tip, Lava bar soap will remove almost all the dye off your hands without making them dry. I keep a few bars in the house at all times🤣

I was already excited to start but after watching your videos, I'm HYPED!! Can you tell me how you dilute your acid and whether you recommend oven or stove top for a beginner?
I'm happy my videos will be of help in you dye journey. I have a playlist of dyeing basics and one of the videos called Acid explains how I prepare my acid mix. This however is my preference, vinegar would work just as well.
Hi Sheryl. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work. I am a huge fan. I am making a shawl out of your on wings of butterflies MCN. The fabric is so pretty. I was just watching your episode 4, part 2 and I noticed you have a lot of repetition in your work and thought that reusable zip ties might make your life easier. I just discovered these about a month ago. They would save you putting the shower curtain hangers on and you can reuse them. They are available on Amazon.ca. Just a suggestion. Thanks for your UA-cam videos.
Thanks. I have thought of that to save money but I often need to use different coloured ties to identify which bases I'm dyeing. Once the yarn is dyed the ties usually take on the same colour which would make them useless to use again.
i understand not wanting streaky or spotty colors when your going for solid, but i also kinda like the defect yarn you showed. ever though about selling that as a different type or discount defects? i'd buy it.
Sometimes I do add miss dyes to the website. Usually I end up using them in my own projects. I design knitwear and these mistake yarns are great for working out stitch gauges and making samples while designing. For example I used the yellow spotted yarn to knit the sample shown for my Winter Wanderlust Pattern on my website.
Hello Sheryl- I’m a hobby dyer and like you, I am a HUGE fan of the deep saturated colors, but have been asked to knit a baby layette in a very pale barely there blush pink color. Any suggestions on how to dye an even color when using just a small amount of dye?
I would follow the steps I outline, maybe use less acid to start to let the colours absorb more slowly and evenly, you can always add more acid. Another option is to purchase a dye that is similar to the shade you want and follow the recommended directions of the supplier.
thank you so much for your information! it really helps me🥰 by the way, i’m from indonesia and i have difficulty to choose the right dye. because no one share any information in my country so would you mind to give any tips and trick to find the right dye to hand dyed the yarn? and is it okay to use dye to dye tie dye shirt? i’m sorry if my english isn’t good. thank you so much🥰
It's important to use the dye that will work with the fibre or material your using. For example you can not use the same dye for wool that you would use for cotton. I only work with protein fibres such as wool, mohair, alpaca so I use acid dyes that are formulated for that. Yes you could do tie dye techniques using this type of acid dye as long as the material is protein based and not a plant based material such as cotton or linen.
Love your videos and love the way you explain things so throughly. Just wanted to ask what is the ratio to the dry color and water you put in your large water container 🙏
In general the ratio that works for me is 1 tsp dye/2 cups water for most colours. Some dye is less pigmented so I may make a stronger concentration but that is rare. For any size container I figure out how much liquid it holds comfortably then I use the ratio I gave to figure out how much dye powder to add, ex. if the container holds 6 cups water I will add 3 tsp dye powder. You can refer to my video about dye linked below. ua-cam.com/video/xj5bwTNEJRw/v-deo.html
What temperature do you recommend the water to be when adding dye? I know you said you put it in your bakers oven afterwards at 180-200 degrees setting for about five hours. Is your oven considered an Oven/proofer? (I was looking at some used ones). If so, can you use the proofer section as well? Thanks for your time!
The proofing temp settings are too low so no I only use the holding settings on mine and I put it as high as it will go which is 180-200 degrees. I like the water as hot as I can get it. If it's steaming or uncomfortable to the touch then for me it's good to go.
Love those saturated colours. I know you have an oven to further cook Yr yarn, but am curious about what temp you are starting with when you're using your gloves to prepare and dye yarn pre cooking?
I always work with hot yarn. I preheat the yarn before I start any of the dyeing process. My temp gauge is if I put my hands in the water in the pan and it's uncomfortable then it's hot enough.
Oh my!! I am so glad I found you :-) Finally, a professional fiber dying artist. One who understands the chemistry and the physical process. I have been wanting to hand dye wool roving into solid colors as I am hand processing fleece for wet felting. I totally get that things may be different with roving vs. yarn (I will figure it out by doing) but I just can't tell you how much I appreciate your knowledge and ability to teach the dying process. There are so few fiber dying artists on UA-cam that are professionally making a product that needs to be consistent. There are people out there using food coloring that I just don't get at all....Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. You now have a fan for life :-)
Thank you for the kind words. I'm sharing what I know but I will humbly admit I don't know everything, there is so much more for me to learn and explore. However I happy to hear that what I'm sharing in my videos is helping you out with your dye adventures. I've never dyed roving but as far as protein fibres go I can't see it being much different then dyeing yarn except maybe some extra care may need to be taken to prevent felting or matting (just guessing). Roving is something I would like to add to my dye adventures one day.
I really appreciate these tutorials, and now I understand where I’m going wrong. 😁. The one question I do have (and I apologize if you said it and I missed it), is that you keep referring to using one cup of acid, but how much acid is that? It’s one cup of water with ? acid. I believe one commenter said she uses one tsp of acid to 100g of yarn. Or is that enough? I’m going to try this out tomorrow, and see if I can improve my dying technique, thanks to you!! Now to watch your other videos.
I'm glad this was helpful for you. I'm referring my acid mix. You can watch my basics of yarn dyeing video on Acid (in playlist) to see how I mix it up or you could just use the same amount of vinegar instead. Use my measurements as a guide but experiment to see how much acid works for your purposes because this may be different than what works for me.
Love your color, love your videos, Sheryl. Thank you. Also like your oven. Curious: how hot does the water get while trays are in the oven? Like you not a fan of gloves. Do your gloves help with heated pans? Do you use a special brand of gloves?
The water gets very hot, Ive just developed a high tolerance for pain (that's how much I hate wearing gloves). But sometimes it's just too hot and I have to wear them. I just use regular dish washing gloves, nothing special to protect from heat but they're good enough for pulling out hot pans or dealing with the hot water. The oven is more of a steamer so it doesn't get as hot as an oven for cooking food.
Love your videos! My problem is that sometimes dye bleeds out when you rinse the yarn (even though it’s had plenty of time with heat, acid, and absorption of the dye). But now seeing the water after you rinsed that dark yarn, maybe I’m being overly concerned (as mine isn’t as much as yours 🤣).
I probably use too much dye at times because I love my colours to be very saturated. The yarn can only absorb so much so yes the water isn't always clear. Since I heat set for awhile not much comes out when washing.
Hello Sheryl ! Thanks for another amazing tutorial! I hope you are well. I have a question / request. 😄 In the very first video you dyed a skein of yarn yellow then knotted it and dyed it again in a different blue and it came out amazing. Can you show that technique? Or recommend a book that shows how to do that technique?
I will do a video in the future on resist dyeing. It can be done several ways. People who tie dye shirts use similar methods all the time and there are videos on that here.
Hello! I absolutely loved all of your videos! I had a question, how do you manage to get your skeins to run clear when rinsing at the end? I love dyeing yarn, but i get so frustrated when I have to rinse for so long. My choice of mordant is citric acid, and I typically add 1 Tbs/100 grams of fiber. Do you have any advice? Thank you so much!
I'm glad you enjoy my videos, thank you for watching. The nice thing about dyeing protein fibres with acid dyes is that usually all of the dye will be absorbed during the heating process. First of all are you using animal based fibres with the acid dye? Plant based fibres won't work. After the dye has exhausted make sure to heat set the yarn long enough so that the dye permanently adheres to the fibres (the dye manufacturer will give guid lines on the temp and how long. When washing the yarn make sure that it is fully cooled and use cold water, warm or hot water can cause acid dyes to run. Hope these tips are helpful.
Sheryl a question please. With the berry dye why wouldn’t you just add double the amount of dye at the beginning to get the extra saturated look you desired? And thanks again xox
Hi Sue. I think I mention that I don't like to add large amounts of dye all at once. I've found through trial and error that I get more even coverage for solids when I add dye in stages and check the coverage between applications.
I do love these videos and dying my own yarn. I recently bought Dyeing to Knit, hoping for some color inspiration and fun yarn play...do you have any book suggestions for intermediate yarn dyers or do you just suggest buying more yarn and experimenting?
I think I have the same book. I tend to buy books about knitting and designing so most of what I've learned about dyeing has come from experimenting. It's the most fun way to learn in my opinion.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn Thank you. It's not a bad book, it just wasn't quite what I'd hoped. I think it's a good beginner book. Let the experimenting continue!
I've done that I've found personally that I get results that I'm happy with when I layer the colour gradually. It gives me more even results. This is where experimenting is helpful to find what works best for you because there are so many factors that determine how the yarn will take the dye.
I suggest you follow the recommendations of the dye company you are using for best results. This is what works for my purposes. I use a proofing oven instead of a regular cooking oven or burner. 200 F is hot enough to set the yarn. After the dye is exhausted I let it cook a minimum of 5 hrs or sometimes overnight. I can do this because there is no direct heat that can damage the yarn (I'm using a proofing oven).
Qué buena eres¡¡¡ le das a todo¡ igual que yo....tu hilado queda precioso... yo estoy empezando a ver podcast para teñir....el horizonte se amplia y necesitamos dias de 78 horas😅
No the yarn is always preheated (hot enough to see steam) before I start adding dye . I've never worked with top fibre but if I did I would use the same methods that I do when dyeing skeins.
How long does it usually take for the dye to absorb completely? I have left them in the stove for hours and there’s still always dye left in there and I’m not using as much dye! Doesn’t make sense.
Some dyes that are highly pigmented may not fully absorb. Dark red and blue dyes are prone to this. A little faint tint of colour in the water is ok. If there is a lot of dye left then there is an issue. Dharma has many different types of dyes. Are you using their acid dye on a protein yarn not plant based or acrylic?
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn yes! I have all the books and have watched about a million videos on yarn dying, so I know I’m doing things properly. I watched another of your videos and it seems like the dye is exhausted but there is still a bit of pigment left over just like in your video, (this is after at least 3h) but then I’ll watch others dying yarn and the dye exhausts in 10-15 minutes, so I’m not sure what’s going on! Frustrating though for sure.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn Thanks, I finally found your response...never tried to contact before. It's great to know I can dye my handspun yarn without having to stand next to the dye pot like the acid dye directions say. Thanks again. Lovely yarn.

I honestly don't have many of those. Any that I have I save to use for my own knitting or crochet projects instead of taking yarn from my shop. For example I used the yellow "mistake" in a design and it turned out wonderful. So nothing goes to waste.
I love the “ugly” yellow color! If I could buy it, I would because it seems as if it was done on purpose!
You are a master at your craft. A real professional. I had been watching another dyer’s show and after watching you, I can see a world of difference.
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. Everyone approaches dyeing differently and I learn and am inspired by the techniques of other dyers as well.

For any size container I figure out how much liquid it holds comfortably then I use the ratio I gave to figure out how much dye powder to add, ex. if the container holds 6 cups water I will add 3 tsp dye powder.
You can refer to my video about dye linked below.

Hi! where can I find that video on how to make your own acid? Thanks!
ua-cam.com/video/uG573S3TjJU/v-deo.html
If you didn’t flip it on round two, would you get a subtle tonal variation, or something else?
When I want a subtle tone I use much less dye but I will still turn the yarn to get an even colour, that's just my preference.
What do you do with the water that is tinted? I was told that you have to exhaust the dye fully because you can’t pour any dye down the drain.
It's safe to pour acid dyes down the drain.
At what temperature do you have the oven at during the dying process
I recommend following the directions that the manufacturer of the dye your using suggests.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn ok yes that makes sense. I for one am happy to take your lessons learnt the hard way xox
Love
Do you measure out the water in the pan before you add the dye?
No I don't. I just have a feel for how much water is needed to get the results I want.
Can I ask why you wouldn’t just use a higher quantity of dye to water to get a more saturated colour in the first go?
I've done that I've found personally that I get results that I'm happy with when I layer the colour gradually. It gives me more even results. This is where experimenting is helpful to find what works best for you because there are so many factors that determine how the yarn will take the dye.
I don't understand what temperature you bake the yarn at in the oven or how long?
What temperature do you use to set the dye?
The dye manufacturer will usually give instructions on how to get the best results. I suggest starting with the temp and set times they recommend.
Are you dyeing this at room temperature? and I use top fiber not skiens
I’m using the right amount of dharma dye, the right amount of heat, and maybe even more Citric acid… 🤔
Am I missing where you state what temperature you set the oven at?
I use a proofing oven to set the yarn. The max temp it reaches is only about 200 F (90 C) and that's enough to set the colour.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn Thanks, I finally found your response...never tried to contact before. It's great to know I can dye my handspun yarn without having to stand next to the dye pot like the acid dye directions say. Thanks again. Lovely yarn.

Are you eating the water??
I assume you mean heating? Yes the pans with the yarn and water come out of the oven hot before I apply dye.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn oh my! Yes heating😂😂thank you!! I sure love your videos, And I really love your set up!
What if we want those "ugly orange spots"?😂 wouldn't we just sprinkle the power dye on at that point or no?
I made those "ugly" spots work and used the yarn for a personal project and I loved how it turned out. I don't waste the mistake yarn.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn I love yarn that has color variegation like that! I like the way it looks!
Can u consider selling ur rejects? . Call them ur character skeins or oopsies skeins I have scene misfits or accident skeins for sale before
I honestly don't have many of those. Any that I have I save to use for my own knitting or crochet projects instead of taking yarn from my shop. For example I used the yellow "mistake" in a design and it turned out wonderful. So nothing goes to waste.
@@EssenceofAutumnYarn thats good i was just giving a suggestion
Camera on manual mode would solve the color changing issue...
My camera is always on manual so I don't know what was going on.
