Dual belt drive for CNC using Openbuilds V-slot

  • Dual belt or Servo-belt configuration can be used with V-slot. In this example I made a mock-up of an OX CNC Y-plate.
    The setup can also be used for the X-axis. The lower GT3 belt is fixed to the rail. The upper belt engages the lower belt except between the two wheels and the pulley. This minimize the stretch.
    The benefit of the dual belt is the scalability - so especially if you have long rails this is worth using.

    Thanks for sharing! I'm assuming you're using GT2 2mm belts? Do you think GT3 aka GT2 3mm would work as well?

      Alana Rabedioux Hi Alana. I am in fact using GT2 3mm belt. 6mm wide. Two layers of that (lower one facing up, the upper other facing down) fits in the slot so that the top side of the upper best I just clear of the wheel. So you have a good security for the belts to come together easily combined with a good grip.

      Martin Barfoed Thanks Martin! I am in the process of building a 1500mm L x 1000mm W OX. After a few months with a shapeoko2, I give up: Not enough strength or accuracy for my needs.
      How are you liking the OX design so far? Have you had any problems with debris going in between the belts?

      Alana Rabedioux I'm not that far in the build process that I have experience on the dust/debris issue you mention. Still working on assembly. My take would be that we definitely need to avoid dust going in between the belts. A dust screen may be needed. I'm using inner plates on the main gantry plates. I would expect that they also helps prevent dust issues. If you are not familiar with the inner plates you can see them on my build page (they are 2nd from the top on the profile picture): openbuilds.com/builds/stainless-ox.1914/

    Hi Martin,
    I'd like to build an Ox Stainless in 1200x1000mm dimensions. Have you done any tests for the dual belt drive for repeatability and accuracy?

    • @martinbarfoed5040
      @martinbarfoed5040  7 років тому

      I have been using my stainless OX for well over a year now and I'm very pleased with the repeatability. Unlike single belt (that I have har om my X-Carve) I havn't had to tighten, adjust or otherwise do anything to the belts since I assembled it. With single belt it's my experience that you need to adjust often to. Dependent on where you are you can source part from openbuilds.com in the US or makersupplies.dk in Europe

    WERE DID U GET THE GT2 3mm belt. 6mm wide i just cant find it trying to follow your lead here and ty for makeing the video.

    Are you using the Nema 23 motors in direct drive? How is that working out? Any issues? What pulley are you using on the motors? 20 teeth? Is that a 6mm belt?
    Cheers Marcus

      Hi Marcus, It works great. Have been using it without any issues for the past 3 years. I have NEMA 23 steppers mounted with GT3 20 teeth pulleys. The upper belt is 6mm wide and the lower is 5mm - glued with double adhesive tape to the bottom of the rail.

      @@martinbarfoed5040 I've been looking at your setup (and the Bell-Evermann drive) for 2 years now. Now I've ordered 10mm GT2 belts and 20teeth pulleys. I figure If it doesn't work I can still gear down the motors with belts.
      Can you tell me more about the electric side? What drivers at what voltage are you running? I figure you are between 1/4 and 1/10 microstepping?
      My current machine is only 24V but I got 48V PSUs for my next one and DM556 drivers.
      Still mulling about which breakout board (EstlCam or Mach3).

      @@heavyweather I made this video on my current control box: ua-cam.com/video/12LoOmPAJ3o/v-deo.html It's running 24V - but 36V would probably be better. I have Mach3 running and the steppers are 1/8 Micro Stepping. I do plan to make a new controller and would like to upgrade to Mach4. I will use PoKeys57 as controller in the new box.

    Nice video. btw, I was wondering what brand double sided tape did you end up using?

    • @martinbarfoed5040
      @martinbarfoed5040  7 років тому +1

      Thanks. I ended going with Scotch ATG Tape Type 969. It a double sided foam tape from 3M 19mm wide, 0.13mm thick. Has now been running for 1½ year w/o any issues

    • @spunkydoru
      @spunkydoru 7 років тому

      Well that's encouraging! I have purchased tape of the same thickness as you (.13 mm) but I'm wondering if it would be better thicker? There is 6 mm of height in the channel. 4 mm will be taken up by the belt, .13 by the tape and 1.5 by the wheel which is 5.63 mm. Take the tape away, there is .5 mm of space. Just a thought though since this has worked well for you.

      Rich Long You are right in that a small lift wouldn't hurt. However, I haven't had any issues due to this. I have also been thinking about making a special version of the V-wheel with a ca. 0.5mm added to the diameter

      Sounds interesting. Please let me know how it works when you get a chance to try it out.

      Hi Leonardo
      This is a mock-up version so I'm working with 6mm MDF sheet. I'm still working on the final drawings before I will cut in 6mm aluminum. When I works I will publish the drawings on OpenBuilds.com

      Hi Khapp
      It's 3M/Scotch. Got it from this vendor (text in Danish)

      Martin Barfoed Hmm, I bought a different type of Scotch brand double sided tape today, and it doesn't seem to be working very well. In the video when you said the other tape was too thick, I believe the tape I have is too thin. I don't get a great engagement of the two belts beneath the wheels. I will have to try again.

    • @martinbarfoed5040

      MrKhapp The other tape I bought was 1mm thick. This is to much to fit in the profile - at least when using the heavier 3mm-belt. Maybe you can fit it in if using "normal" GT-2 belt.
      This is the 1mm VHB tape:
