  • Homemade Launcher... 90V DC motors + SCR controllers = Lots of FUN!
Keep in mind I built this out of various scrap I had laying around. All total I have about 100 bucks invested. A tad bit cheaper than the "REAL" launchers that they sell.
So what if you did NOT have some cool stuff laying around, but were willing to get resourceful I would say with some labor, maybe a couple favors - you could build one for around $300! My logic in saying this is: I bought a SPARE motor for mine off Ebay for 40 bucks DELIVERED. I see a guy selling refurbished KBIC controllers for 40 bucks a piece - so far that's $160. I bought the top wheels and tires off Ebay for $60 and the lower ones for 30 from Lowes. So add that 90 to the 160 and you get $250. That leaves you 50 bucks to gather some steel. The go - cart guys sell wheel/hub adapters although I made mine since I was trying to match a specific motor shaft as I had the motors laying around. They are easy enough to make any first year machinist could whip them up in no time. I bet a box of doughnuts and a visit to your local machine shop would yield some positive results.
I guess my point in all that is I keep seeing comments how "they'd be nice, but are too expensive!" Like a lot of things - if you want it cheap - you can do it - ya just gotta get a little creative ;-)
This is REV A - we'll use it a tad longer before we decide what improvements we need to make.

The frame is 3"x3" tubing welded into a "T". I welded two strips w/holes in them so I could adjust the motors - closer/farther apart as needed. The hardest part (not very hard) was making an adapter to go from the motor to the rim - I machined them, but I have seen very similar looking ones from the go cart guys. 90VDC 1/3 HP - 2500 RPM and SCR controllers. I bent the ball guide up from electrical conduit. The motor and SCR's are available from Ebay (hard to find pair of motors - patience).

Would you recommend a good dc motor to go faster?

Hi, Very interested in building one of these. Do you have dimensions of the frame, etc, lengths widths

I just made an upgrade before winter so I plan on doing another video - hopefully I can answer some of these questions with that.

Great machine , I'll build one , What size of Rim or Tires did you use ? Do you have the brand and model of the SCRs ? Thanks

superjaviergg1 The tires I used are marked "13X5.00-6 Turfsaver" made by Carlisle - they aren't perfect as they have some runout. I always planned on running a coarse grinder on them to true them up a little, but haven't gotten around to it yet. The controllers I used are made by KB Electronics Inc. Model KBIC-120 - again maybe not the best choice - just what I had laying around.I see other machines using larger tires - I assume that they are using 1750rpm motors- I can get away with the slightly smaller diameter tires because my motors go to 2500 rpm. FWIW

How far can balls launch? I'd be interested in such a device to practice scoring attempts after a 'cross'.

I haven't really measured it, but I'd guess it'll go 50 yards pretty easy. The limiting factor at the moment is the tires and rims - they aren't balanced very well - I may try balancing them and see if I can crank the RPM some to see what the actual top end might be. It'll do crosses no problem. It is turned way down in this video. I just got a digital tach - so maybe I can hook that up and see what distance I get with what RPM. At the moment we mostly use #4 balls, but this year we will switch to #5's so that may affect things as well.

Hi I am a 14 year old goalkeeper who plays for the Olympic development program I have a backyard training area and really could use this kind of machine. Me and my dad are looking to build our own and we were wondering what kind of motor you are using? If you could get back to me on this video that would be great. Thanks

This is a 2500rpm motor turned way WAY down. I had a tach on it a while back - I can't remember where I normally run it but it's NO WHERE near 2500rpm. This video is when we FIRST had it running - as my son got older we cranked it MUCH MUCH faster than shown here. Eventually the wheel balance became the limiting factor. I had used cheap wheels and was looking into getting them balanced but never got that far. Bottom line 2500 is MORE than you'll ever need.

More than 2500rpm .looking for engines that will go 120km/h on average. What do you suggest?link pls😇
