It's very depressing hearing such an optimistic and happy man talk about his dead wife. It's also very depressing knowing that I will never get to meet either of them. A geat man and a great painter.

That was pretty cool actually, seeing such a piece of TV nostalgia from Europe on an American channel, just goes to show from where-ever they can find archived copies of the show ;).
It's probably a broadcast mistake, maybe either by someone accidentally turning a knob to the test pattern system in the transmission tower or at the main broadcast site or because of a temporary loss of signal. In the days this was broadcasted, a lot of cable or over-the-air transmission and receiving started at one of the bigger transmission towers that either picked up the signal for distribution from another tower to distribute it over the local cable network around the tower towards the homes connected to them (or a tower picked it up from the master control room at the station that was broadcasting the episodes and served as a repeater to other towers).
Whenever the signal would get lost (weather could be a big influence in those days, with the signal being analog a really hot day could make you see all kinds of really weird echoes (in transmission land they are called "reflections") in the image), there could be systems in place that would either cut the transmission signal off but there could also be systems in place, (at the transmission towers and sometimes at the local distribution network amplifying systems, but I'm not sure if these were used in Germany) that would immediately kick in at signal loss and provide one of the many test images there have been used in the history of television in Germany (and in The Netherlands as well).
Transmission towers back in those days usually had technicians inside them during broadcasts that would monitor incoming signals and the signal people would see at home. Whenever they saw a test image they knew something was wrong and could start locating the problem, either by checking systems in the tower or by calling the distribution point.
The test card in general was used to adjust equipment (not only your TV at home) by providing some very characteristic voltages in the signal and differences between them, showing inconsistencies in the transmission signal and sending and receiving and the viewing equipment. Electronics could be quite heat-sensitive back then and using the testcard was necessary to deal with manufacturer margins in components and heat-sensitive components that could slightly shift their output once warmed up after being on for 2-3 hours.
Indirectly it was also a way to make people aware their TV was functioning properly, while people could wonder if their TV broke if it would only display a black image, seeing a test card (with the beep) was basically a way of showing "Sorry, your TV is still working well, the problem is somewhere else, we are working on it, hold on".

"through the power of television". Oh man. If he had known that his would end up on the Internet where it cannot be permanently deleted. Forever entombed in history and viewable to our eyes. "it won't last 100 years". Maybe it won't, but this beautiful show will last forever because of the Internet and will reach millions more people than TV ever could. I wish I could've met him to tell him how amazing he is. I was only 5 when he died and I remember my summer school (or whatever it was for 5 year old after preschool) teacher crying that day.

My personal favorite bit is towards the end, when he's talking about the response to his late wife. He's thanking everyone for understanding, he sounds like he's about to burst into tears, and then.....he shrugs. It may seem like a weird action, but for me, I actually do that whenever I'm in a situation of that sort. I find it helps relieve me, as it turns what is a serious and depressing part of life into, well, just a part of life. It's something we can't understand, it's just normal, and you accept it. Thanks, Bob. :)

This was a very touching episode and painting, especially with the gratitude he shows at the end...in a very small moment, he showed not only how much doing what he was doing meant to him, but also the appreciation he had for the people who watched him. He was a great painter, but if he didn't also come off as just a very lovely person, I'm not sure anyone would still remember him as fondly as they do.

I wish I could make my hair look like that. His show always put me in a good mood. The tone and cadence of his voice are incredibly soothing. He was mellow and soft-spoken but at the same time had this presence about him that could command and hold my attention...quite a feat considering I am riddled with ADD. I wish I could have met him before he passed. Rest in peace Mr. Ross. You have improved the quality of many lives through your show.

I love that no matter what, he always "suggests" that a tree might live on his canvas. If Bob Ross doesn't have a tree or a cloud in his painting, he did it wrong.

I remember this one ... one of my favourites.
When my girls were little, I would escape into the land of (the Joy of Painting) as a release where I could give myself some quiet time. I watched Bob diligently in the seventies and eighties and learned so much about the way of light, composition, colour and how it all plays on the lay of the land. Believe it or not, this method of seeing transferred into my landscape photography later on ... even now years later I found that what I manage to create in my work, definitely has a Bob Ross - "Happy Trees" spin to it. I have only just now realized that when I was reminded of his shows just the other day.
I paint now with the lens of my camera but I also take it into Photoshop to take it further into the artwork realm. (If he were here today ... I'm sure he'd love the idea and master it as well). My artwork has grown to include much more than that of landscapes and seascapes but the fundamentals are still present in anything I envision ... at least I see it.
Wish he was still here but thankful his style and his wonderful love of teaching still exists and is being shared for anyone new to painting because he was definitely a pro who will always be missed. He'll be remembered as being a peaceful man who with a quiet demeanor, could show one how to make any tree happy dancing in the light ... he was just the sweetest most genuine person on screen.
Thank you Bob, wherever you are, R.I.P. at least you are together with your wife again, (this episode was so sad) but ... your legacy lives on. You were and remain an inspiration.
Thanks to those who make sure these shows continue being shown and shared throughout the world. We need more like him and appreciate through the power of the internet that his talent continues to shine and share with the world.
It is hard to believe he has been gone for twenty years so thank you for the privilege, it is appreciated that he lives on ... here.

Bob had so much to teach, about life as much as painting. I learned more about painting from watching his show than I ever did in college, and his lessons are still relevant, even to a digital painter such as myself. He was a master and is now a legend. Thank you for everything, Bob, you left the world more beautiful than it was. And a big thanks to the Bob Ross channel for providing these full length videos!

Bob usually paints very colorful, happy pictures, but on this one it's very dark and gloomy, and this is right after his wife passed. I believe he used this one to show how dark of a time it was.

Skylar Christopher except this isn’t right after his wife passed away. His wife died on the 1st of August, 1992. His mother died on the 15th of February, 1991. This aired on the 20th of May, 1993, so many episodes were produced and aired after his wife and mother both died, so just because it’s a dark and gloomy painting shouldn’t represent the fact that his wife had died 10 months beforehand, because not every painting will be bright and shiny.
