Hindemith knew perfectly well each instrument. So he decised to write sonatas for piano and each existing wind instrument. He started with the flute, but the series lasted some 20 years, ending by some odd instruments iike the tuba! At the end, he felt it as a constraint rather than en enjoying work, but the clarinet sonata dates forom the bginning of thre series, wjen Hindemith was still enthusiastic about the project. .

I was a clarinet performance major at Auburn and attempted this piece. He did a GREAT job! Hindemith is tough.

Beautiful piece of music. Learned it in 7th grade. Did you know that Hindemith learned how to play all his sonatas?

As a pianist, I've been warned to run away screaming if asked to play this.

Lovely performance - you should also check out the Arnold Cooke Sonata. Very similar composition style to Hindemith.

Also, Walter Skolnik works as well. He studied with Hindemith or one of his prodigies I believe.

Very good performance. :-) and I'm still not a big fan of this piece - I had to play it in college and it was like pulling teeth for me. :-) Still, I can appreciate the talent!

Thank you Jordi for this fine performance. Unfortunately the audio is so bad it is difficult to listen to all in one sitting. It would be nice to know who the pianist is: She is also fine.

+Dennis Dougherty Thank you very much for your comment, this concert was supposed to be live broadcasted but the radio guys came late! So the only audio I have is from de camera... sorry. The pianist is Julia Martínez, both are teachers at Mallorca Conservatory (Spain)

It seems like he's playing tilted like he's pointing a lot to the right, is that just me or is it just like personal preference or a technique?

He might be doing it so he doesn't block his vision of the sheet music. Or maybe he has crooked front teeth. I do, and my mouthpiece sits a little to the left.

Hey Susie, clarinets are omni directional

I think he's doing it for range of motion while he's playing, so that he can move to the music but not smack his clarinet bell

Nice indeed...I think? It would be great to hear the dynamics and musical nuances in tone and phrasing but it is mostly lost in the room with the cheep microphones in back of the hall.

Who plays a march rubato? These folks, that's who! Bizarre interpretation of the second movement.

This is a fine performance and is good for a study of the work. The piano tuning and audio quality are bad however. Not good to introduce someone to the work. Also, Hindemith was very adamant about C-128 Hz which equals about A-430 to 432Hz: Not 440.
