couldronofcats I doubt they would’ve been practiced this slow in a real fight just like sparring and training with other martial arts

It was Hayashizaki Jinsuke who started to use this type of long swords late 1500s. After the dead of Hayashizaki the tradition was carried on by Tamiya Heibei Narimasa (Founder of Tamiya Ryu). Tamiya Heibei further developed this style with the long sword and improvised upon the techniques. His skill appeared divine ... Nowadays Tamiya Ryu still has one set of 11 kata based upon the use of these long swords, be it performed with "normal" sized swords...

Iaijitsu is an killing motion which involves the user to quickly draw their sword while stepping to the side to strike a killing blow. Iaijitsu Focuses on killing the target instantly. With a Master in hands, he would kill off an unsuspecting target.

I am a practitioner of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu, Yamauchi-ha. It is an O-Dachi style and heavily based on real attack and defense with the long katana (our sensei and several others regularly use the shinken - sharp sword/true katana - in training). It is normal for us to analyze and criticize techniques in order to be able to understand them. And I'm with you on this one - WHAT. O.o

just a thought, i feel like the one waza they show alot where he pushes off may be used to counter the opening of drawing such a big sword at distance. against a shorter weapon the opponent may be waiting to attack as your drawing because it would be much faster process. to counter that attack perhaps rushing in before either drew and then pinning their draw by your push/ram is effective. Waza are often hard to imagine utility because they were designed for warring times.

Most people are pointing out that these are done from a hilariously unlikely position; I wonder if thats the point? Kata are all performed with very little space, a very long sword, and during seiza. I think anyone can agree these conditions can make it difficult to draw quickly and precisely, but those that master these kata can do just that. It might also be for secrecy, if you imagine both participants standing and starting from a bit farther away, they absolutely resemble standard kata, but anyone watching would just think its some strange niche art. Just some thoughts.

The odds of the samurai meeting for tea while one of them is armed with what amounts to a field weapon seem miniscule. Why would he not choose to employ the kodachi or wakizashi or similar, shorter weapon, that he almost certainly has with him?
I agree with KendoWorld, I'm sure there's a good reason for this iai's existence, but it must be more than a teacher saying "IF having tea WITH o-dachi, here is how to..." Any sane warrior would go "... why would I be in that situation to begin with?"

the reason I took so long is because I'm not that invested in checking my youtube inbox but when I've engaged in discourse I feel the need to respond to the other person be 1 second later or 1million years

@giantenemycrabthing It definately is an interesting style of Iai :)
Im sure it has a valid reason for appearing like this, its just above and beyond us, haha.

I respect their skill but I don't understand this demonstration. Why is the man on the left get so close? Wouldn't the short sword man draw during that time?

this style is probably based on some etiquet at least i think so, can't think of any other explanation :D

they started at the range because often samurai would meet while in seiza the kneeling postuer haveing tea or discussing things like this was common and somtimes people would try to assassinate the other from this kneeling position and thus counter techniques were made for this range as you see in this video, Kendo world is right the concept was above your head, attempt to read into the culture and figure out why someone does something then the world isn't so confusing

    What.
I've seen Yakumaru Jigen Ryu videos without batting an eyelid. (If you think that sounds easy, try doing it yourself.) But here, all I can say is WTF.
Apparently, the o-dachi side is taught to begin from a distance that no-one sane would find oneself in, and defeat an opponent that was already inherently in a disadvantage. Meanwhile, the ko-katana side is mainly taught to fight while tranquillised, bored to tears and paralysed from the knees down.
    I repeat: WHAT.

Given that it took you four months to inform me the conversation wasn't continuing, I wasn't aware it was a conversation. Also, what part of my UA-cam handle offended you?

  • @couldronofcats
    @couldronofcats 11 років тому

its not offensive its just contradictory So you could be a subtle troll and I'll not continue debating you if theres a chance your a subtle troll then theres no point in talking to you because I don't like arguing I just want to tell people what I know and see if they actually know anything that I could learn from them as well I'm just telling you what I've read about and what I've been told by my teachers I don't mean to make fun of your name.

If my enemy is as slow, stiff, old, and lazy to even avoid my attacks just like this guy.. I can easily take him out without any fancy movements
