Kayla Shannon has been renting this small studio apartment in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood for one and a half years. Not too long ago she welcomed a sweet gray kitten named Moon and a little after that she fostered (and then adopted) an orange kitten named Buddy.
“My apartment is my sanctuary, it’s the place where I allow myself to experience a ray of emotion, get creative, a retreat for rest, and honor women. When the world outside is chaotic I know that I can come to this place and be my truest self. No one is here to cast judgment,” explains Kayla Shannon, who works in HR at Apartment Therapy Media. “2021 was the year that having my own space meant the most to me, so I searched Craigslist and many other local sites before stumbling on this apartment via StreetEasy. It was a gem and waiting to be upgraded! I love the sun rising and the amount of light in the space, it brings peace to my days. My neighbors are kind and I never feel alone with all the action out my windows.”

It is not just that she showed us her great apartment - she shared some of her story. I also enjoyed seeing her cat pop in and out occasionally!

" Lean into your story" That really resonates with me. At 52, I finally feel safe, stable and "I" am feeding my soul. Decades of co dependency and homelessness, I now have a apartment that reflects who I am. By surrounding myself with symbols of family and objecs that truly evoke who I am and will become , my space heals me. Thank you Kayla and Apartment Therapy.

What a beam of light she is. This home is beautiful - so restorative and welcoming with lovely pockets for the rituals that matter. The wall colour! It's like good sustenance. It’s fabulous, I love it! Some people have a real knack with colours, fabrics, patterns etc, and this lady is obviously very talented in that direction. She’s made an amazing use of a limited space, turning it into a warm, vibrant home
This is my favourite apartment I've ever seen on this channel. What a beautiful cozy, warm and relaxing home. I'm not even a colourful person but it all works to create such a peaceful atmosphere. WOW, that was a fantastic video for so many reasons! Bravo! Every single inch of this place is gorgeous - literally from top to bottom. And somehow it seems SO much larger than 375 sq feet. Absolutely love the warm wall colors, William Morris strawberry thief, the old records which are actually being played, the Obama quote and jewelry spinner-stand, that beautiful bountiful couch, the scarf lamp (be careful of it getting hot, however!), and so many other details. You are amazing. I'm jealous!

Girl you inspire me and break my heart! I see you're a book lover so I already like you! My dad was raised on the streets of the Bronx, I was born on Staten Island, blah, blah, blah, I was raised from a baby other places. Always wanted to exlore my NY roots that I found during the pandemic, go far back...life got in the way. I'm young but older....your place is adorable. I live in Hawaii and wish we could switch for a week. I hate to think I'll never get to NY and walk the streets, see things I only see on tv. Look up my family and fill in the blanks. Joan Armatrading! Right on. This apartment reminds me a lot of the apartment I had in Astoria, Queens. I didn't stay in it long enough to settle in, but I knew it had potential (aside from the cockroaches and too small hot water tank). Like Kayla here, I come from a rough background, and loved living alone so much! I lived alone, by choice, for 20 years. Sometimes, that meant spending 90% of my income on rent, but it was necessary because, for me too, home meant safety, and freedom, two things I did not have growing up. I finally married at 45, having met someone with whom I could create an environment of equal safety and freedom. You have a beautiful home, Kayla. Good for you.
