Join the Tech3D Discord Server and talk to us all about this stuff! discord.gg/r9fwR668RF
Welcome all! GET SUBSCRIBED because I'm having to wait until after the next release of Vault before creating the next versions of this video, there's some new stuff coming that I have to include but can't until the next version releases, so get subbed so you don't forget and miss out! Yes, I'm resorting to that ha!
The "10GB" limit is a concern for a lot of people thinking about using Vault and I remember how confusing it was to understand this in the early days. It wasn't in the scope of this video to discuss it at length, but for clarity...
    - The 10GB limit is imposed by Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition, not Autodesk Vault. You still only get SQL Express bundled in with Vault Professional.
    - As a small business it's unlikely you'll ever reach 10GB of metadata, it would take dozens of years of dozens of engineers to create that much metadata
    - Paying for Vault doesn't remove the metadata limit, you'll still have that limit with Vault Professional. You have to upgrade to a full license of SQL Server to remove the 10GB database limit, and you can do that with either Vault Basic or Workgroup/Pro
    - You can start with Vault Basic and SQL Express, monitor the database size and then upgrade to a full SQL license at any time and remove that limit well in advance of it ever being a problem
    - If you ever did reach that 10GB limit and I have seen it happen, the Vault will continue to be accessible but will behave very strange as it won't accept any further data with no accurate warnings/errors specifying why it isn't working. It generally needs an expert to investigate why the Vault isn't working to track down this as being the issue, which can then only be fixed by purchasing the full SQL license and migrating that.

Love to see you are back to the Vault stuff! One really annoying thing is when you want to run Vault Basic and Pro etc on the same machine. This makes it hard for contractors using different clients Vaults. They need to just have one Vault Client that's limited by the Server it's connecting to.. One day maybe.

I never left it, it was my day job for 15+ years! It just doesn't appeal to a wide audience on UA-cam so have to pick the topics carefully but it is what it is!

I find so many smaller companies do not take advantage of Vault. It is sad and funny at the same time. Also my local university does not consider document control a topic worth discussing. I am sure the professors have no clue since none of them have ever really worked a day in their lives. This is just sad.

Yh very true. I have been thinking of such a system anytime I am modelling or designing and I always wondered if there was a software for cad control or document control. Thought of creating one myself till I chanced on this.

Vault is a must have but the basic version is almost the same for years, no new functionalities have been implemented for a long time.
Anyway, I can't work without it now, it helps a lot when you need to deal with file renaming (who said design assistant can do it ?), searching, design copy and plenty of other things.

reminds me of the old days, where I was the only engineer for a company... still wanted Vault.

Great explanation, maybe in next video you can tell for Vault Workgroup how the thin-client works compared to Vault Professional.

we have been using Vault for years in the office and love it. I have it installed on my home laptop for personal projects, what is the most efficient solution for installing a sharable vault at home or in the cloud ?

Hi. Question. Im trying to migrate ny company over to inventor from autocad that have for years used and developet xdata heavy down in autocad. So i made a lisp program to read the xdata and post it in a block as attributes. So i want vault basic to read this atteibute data. But i cant find out how to get vault to read all blocks. And not a predefined named block. Or do you know of a better way to get "parts data" over to vault. Any advice is much appreciated 👍😊

We (2 engineers) have been using Vault basic for years on a Workstation, on which I also work. Is it also possible to install Vault Workgroups or Professional on a workstation?
Not according to official requirements: it could only be installed on a Windows Server. The question is, is that correct?

so are you saying that Bault Basic can only search the database up to 10GB? So if I want to see everywhere a design is used it will only search for up to 10 Gb? We are a small startup company and can't afford the paid version yet. But we would like to try vault basic for file management.

No, he said 10Gb worth of metadata, the properties data of each actual file.

As John said, there's no numerical limit on the amount of CAD data you can have in Vault basic, it's the metadata can't go beyond 10GB. That's all the properties and relationship data of all the files etc not the actual models and drawings. It was beyond the scope here and would have added too much waffle onto the video to talk about all this but...
      - As a small business it's unlikely you'll ever reach 10GB of metadata, it would take years of dozens of engineers to create that much metadata

Save your time buying Solidworks with PDM, then you will have a powerful tool.

Aye you can run it from Azure or AWS etc they say its "compatible" but are a bit sketchy on saying that they support it, it is on-prem by nature but I know of a few places that have put a Vault into Azure

@@Neil3D We run Pro on a VMWare VPN to a company who hosts our server and we have had no issues. We pay $1200/mo. for this arrangement currently and would like to bring in house. Do we have to buy a huge server? We have only 3 users but have lots of 30GB+ RCP/RCS files for point clouds.
