      When I saw that I thought it was so new that it had to have a bent shaft from hitting a stump or something. While mowing it did misfire two times. Almost like it sucked up a tiny bit of water but never died and continued to run. I was using the same gas that was in it so possibly it died on the guy and he just pushed into the shed and put it away because there was water in the fuel. I topped up the tank and mowed with it last night and not a single issue.

    • @patrickmorrissey2271
      @patrickmorrissey2271 3 місяці тому +2

      @@sixtyfiveford Cleary a great find Sir. I kind of thought the same thing early in the video... They hit a rock and sheared the key, and now it's out of time and won't start.... It's almost the only way it could be so mint, is that it won't run.... When it started for you, I literally was yelling "What?!??!?!?" at my computer... I was in disbelief....
      The first "out of time" mower I came across, I hurt my hand real bad trying to start it, and to this day, I wear a big huge glove when I pull the rope.... So, I seriously hope that never happens to you....
      Water in gasoline: Now look, before I say this, I will just say, I am saying this with all due respect. I am not here to tell you how to do it. You clearly know what you are doing. So, this is just my opinion. My opinion, and $5 bucks, will get you a cup of coffee at starbucks.
      That being said, I just assume the gas has water in it. Because it always does. I have like a 2 quart vase, and I don't need a vase, it's just a big tough piece of glass that I'm not using... When I dump gas in it, there is ALWAYS water in the bottom. 100%.
      I'm not talking about a couple water bubbles at the bottom... I'm talking about, a layer, of water, at the bottom... Not a small amount....
      Now, if you are nuts, like I am, you can sit there and be super steady, and pour off the good gas from the top... Or use a hand pump, to pump from the upper area.... and of course, the part at the bottom, dispose of properly, of course.... Of course....
      I don't know what they are doing with modern gas, but there is always water. If you just assume there is water, and go from there, you will save hours of farting around.... Just throwing it out there for you....

    The angle of the chipper blades is critical. I made a wooden jig to hold them so I got a consistent angle. At first they were doing the same as this one. After resharpening on the correct angle they cut like gangbusters.
    The beaters are also important to mulch the smaller stuff. They can be reversed and also flipped over so you have 4 actual surfaces to beat on before it’s necessary to sharpen.

    Bagging lawn mowers are very much like a vacuum cleaner. You have to maintain airflow to pick up debris. Since most vacuum cleaners use dry only porous filters still, you have to clean and/or replace those filters for maximum performance. Dry filters have gotten better yet worse over the years. No longer are they made of paper that loses performance fairly quickly, they are made of a plastic microfibre that has better performance but ultimately is worse for the environment. Lawn mowers you don't have to worry too much in the way it performs as a filter as the bags are used over and over again until worn out.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 місяці тому +3

      Montgomery Ward was doing the same thing as Sears and just having other companies make it for them. I believe this was made by Roper who also made stuff for Montgomery Wards.
      Tecumseh made the mistake of making engines that followed suit with automotive technology(ohv, counterbalance crankshaft to eliminate vibration, fuel pumps, etc). This frustrated a ton of people that were used to the 1930s technology that Briggs ran all the way to the mid-2000s. People were just used to it as it was the same engine their father ran on a mower. Honda actually did a lot of the same things Tecumseh did just a little bit later. However, by the time they started to catch on it was becoming more mainstream. To compete, Tecumseh started making really budget engines for the last decade or so until finally they couldn't compete against the super cheap Briggs Flathead and closed shop in 2008. Craftsman actually built their name on the backs of Tecumseh is nobody knew what to come say was with the Craftsman logo covering it. So did Toro mowers. Briggs and Honda were the only engine manufacturers that wouldn't let you rebrand their motors 100%. Everybody still knew if they had a Briggs or a Honda no matter what equipment.

    • @iowafox2206
      @iowafox2206 3 місяці тому

      @@sixtyfiveford I always thought ward was there own company for stuff I learned something today.
      As for what you said about tecumseh and all I agree 100%. My thing with tecumseh comes from the ones I've used personally on stuff from the 80s to the early 90s. I had them on 3 snowblowers, a 70s Garden tractor and on a tiller. Mainly the 8hps are what really put a bad taste for them in my mouth. I now say when they run they are ok. Once they start having issues they are garbage. That is because here recently I pulled my snowblower out gave it a yearly tune up. Started it up it ran good then the rpms went sky high and the bottom end let go and the engine seized up and cracked.
      Prior 2 years ago now during winter the same thing happened I was blowing snow the engine starting running really high and then blew a hole in the block.
      I know thats a governor issue.
      The other examples are all the other engines from them I had I could never get it them go run correctly no matter what I did. All where used and at least 25 years old when I got them with unknown maintenance history. I started doing regular routine service on it all but in the end they all frustrated me and it's enough for me to say I'm done with those engines and I'll replace them with something else. I personally am getting a fondness of honda and the Honda clones these days.

    Honda meets and totally succeeds 2.5:1 on propel drive systems compared to Toro. I have had lots of Honda mowers and a handful of Toro mowers and the transmissions are bulletproof on every Honda I have had: HR21SX, HR214SX, HRA214SX, HRC216k3HXC, HRX217HYC. Toros have PlastiCrapTM transmissions. I have had to fix at least one on one Toro machine and even the Personal Pace transmissions are known for having issues. If I wanted a variable speed system (I have hydrostatic on my current Hondas so I do) that wasn't Honda, I would choose the Cub Cadet MySpeed system over Toro if those were the only two machines. Nice find on both the chipper/shredder and tiller. They looked almost brand new.
    That being said, I would prefer to have the Tecumseh over the Briggs. Every Briggs like that that I have owned has caused some time, money and frustration due to the convoluted fuel systems causing temperamental operation. Granted, the Tecumseh may not run as smoothly but they have been like Hondas: Starts within one or two pulls guaranteed, at least for me.

      I have cleaned countless gas tanks. The problem is if they have flaky rust and you remove it will simply re-rust almost immediately. You have to seal the tank as the original galvanized type coating is long gone. It becomes a never-ending process of clogging the main pickup tube screen. I generally save the engine and wait for a destroyed engine with a good gas tank to be a donor to make one. Good gas tanks on eBay cost as much as an entire Honda clone/ Chinese engine. So if you're just looking to make a profit, it's easier to put $100 complete engine on versus the hours of cleaning a tank where it's just going to be the same in 6 weeks.

    Could you have put a shim, or say a couple washers under the blades on the woodchipper to take up the gap, or is there something in the way its built that wouldn't allow that? If someone didnt have a welder I think that would be a easy alternative to get it done.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 місяці тому

      Some chipper brands have a little plate that's bolted down that moves in and out to fine tune that gap. The main flywheel that the blades bolt to though is machined in at an angle to hold that blade so you wouldn't be able to space it out. Mainly because you wouldn't have the support and then you would increase the depth of cut. It seems that most chippers I come across though have a square chute/landing area versus a round one. So someone could easily bolt a plate in there if there wasn't already one.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 місяці тому

      This has been a ongoing mental project for decades. The problem is all the safeties that are required even with my lack of safety mindset. Heated water turns into a life-altering bomb in seconds if something mildly goes wrong.
      There are no pressure washers out there that can handle the heat going through it. So you have to put the heater after the pressure. It has to be a 100% open system with a full pressure going through it all times so nothing can build up. Everything going before the heat could is pretty standard. It's after that where you need high temp flexible hose and essentially a Non-Stop stream of boiling hot water. You can't make a system where you turn on and off the trigger like you would typically on a pressure washer.

      Yeah, the Tecumseh have that flared over fitting holding their recoil together on mowers, that's annoying. Luckily I have very little issues with the Tecumseh recoils though. Seems like I have more issues with the Briggs of the era. I'm actually a big fan of Tecumseh engines and think they made a way better product in their day. It was different and not familiar to people so it got a lot of hate. Their last decade of production with the mowers got pretty sloppy though as they were trying to budget their way into manufacturer's equipment. They were running overhead valves in the '70s before Briggs could ever even dream of it. But in Briggs defense the Flathead was so well built that it never required any modifications. It's funny because the most hated feature of the Tecumseh is the bowl style carburetor and now every single engine runs this style.

    • @heliarche

      @@sixtyfiveford I was working on a later model, 90's or so, Tecumseh powered snowblower. The recoil spring was doing something weird and I'd have liked to check it out. I get Briggs recoils that will act stupid on me but I can get those apart and usually make them work. Honestly I have nothing but love for either make from back in the day. They were both simple and bulletproof. Personally I like the bowl style carb. I can usually drop the bowl, blow the main jet and it runs. Either one is dead simple though. I find it therapeutic to work on them.

    I was leaving Walmart one day and I parked way out toward the end of the parking lot. There was a woman there who obviously needed a jump start for her car. After I got it running, she tried to pay me. I told her it was fine . As I was putting away the jumper cables and everything in the back, I heard her ask “is your door unlocked? “I thought it was kind of odd question but I answered yes without really thinking. I heard the door open and close as I looked around. She jumped in the car and sped off. When I got in the driver seat I looked over and there were two new jars of creamy peanut butter in the passenger seat. So yes, I have literally gotten paid with peanut butter.
    One other thing I’ve seen go wrong with those old Briggs is the gasoline pick up tube has a small screen in it. If the gas got cruddy in there, I’ve seen that screen literally skimmed over like somebody glued it. And it seems you can never get those things to unscrew without breaking them off in the carburetor. so the last ones I worked on, I took a pocket knife and just scraped the screen and then cleaned it to get the crud out of it.

      We need to create a society around paying with peanut butter. Yeah that pickup screen is why I say you can't mess with a rusted (flaky) gas tank. Even if you spend hours cleaning it, it'll just continually deposit fine particles and clog up that screen every hour of running.

The gravity fed Tecumseh was a single pull engine which made them slightly ahead of their time. Briggs did have their shallow tank model without the fuel pump/ diaphragm. @sixtyfiveford  3 місяці тому

      One of the best benefits is it never dies. With a little basic maintenance on the engine, these mowers are 30 to 40-year life mowers. Whereas the Honda or any other mower with the self-propelled always has issues and is the death of it. A Honda's engine might go 30 to 40 years but its transmission won't.
      Why do I like the personal Pace? There are no levers to grab, bails to pull/release to switch on and off the propel. You simply hold on to the handle like you would any mower and your forward motion pushes down on the handle and engages the self-propelled. The harder you push, the faster it moves. However, this is in no way you pushing the mower. When you come to the end of a row, you naturally stop and your handle pulls backwards with your hands and the mower stops. You do your turn and as you're naturally pushing the mower around the turn, it begins to repel itself again to whatever speed you want. You can do rapid in and out motions like getting under a pine tree all with it propelling itself in and you pulling it out. It essentially feels like you're pushing an empty grocery cart and you can stop, move forward, go as fast as you want at any moment without any exertion. Absolutely genius system.
