Today, Brighton and Hove Albion are a model of how a football club should be run.
They punch above their weight. They unearth excellent players. And they play watchable football.
But it hasn’t always been the case. Seb Stafford-Bloor charts their rise from nearly collapsing as a football club. Craig Silcock illustrates.

Morning everyone: we got our Wills mixed up here - Will Buckley scored the double against Doncaster, not Will Hoskins. Our mistake - have a great day.
All good lads
Deserves the recognition - Will Buckley was very much the proto-Kaoru Mitoma
No drama! Bienvenue
Thank you! Great video nevertheless.
Please don't get your will mixed up-Leave tifo to the Athletic pls
Something that’s so cool about Brighton’s rise is each manager going slightly further than the last. Hughton won promotion and kept them up with good looking football, Potter ascended to mid-table and defined the culture of attacking football and a team of young stars, De Zerbi is challenging for Europe and is entrenching that. All three have played their part magnificently,
Hughtonball was not good looking in the slightest, those were some dready, scrappy years fighting for survival in the Prem.
Hughton ball was defensive lol
We played some great football under Hughton in the Championship, not so much in the Prem though
@@argartu9875 that's what you need when you gotta stay in the best league
lets all forget about hypia please
Thanks for this, Tifo. As a Brighton supporter, it made me feel quite emotional. How far we have come.
If you don't win anything this season and you sell half of your team and don't use that money to rebuild than you're irrelevant point of an elite sport is to win trophies not to play nice football
@@vghiknbopkvdd665rdzzAfgg Football isn't all about winning. Brighton have been on the up for years. It's a long process. Players will definitely be sold over the summer but not half of the team.
@@vghiknbopkvdd665rdzzAfgg cringe
@@jeromheath football is not about winning? What is it about than? 💀
@@vghiknbopkvdd665rdzzAfgg Supporting your local club. The ups and downs, the progression. It's a big part of the community.
Our club's story is starting to be told. Hard not to cry right now in all honesty
I hope ye go into liquidation.
@@C_T372 what is wrong with you 😂
@C_T372 not gonna happen mate 😂
@@C_T372not anymore with the money they got this season
I was 12 when we left the withdean but I remember so many rainy days wondering if we would ever make it this point. The last 5 years have felt like a vivid, crazy dream.
Plastic ponchos a plenty
My school does sports day at withdean stadium and I’m a Brighton fan
Brighton are what every club should aspire to be. They're a wonderful representation of our city. Honest, thoughtful, well run and fans put at the forefront. And we got to sneakily watch the stadium being built via livestream when we were supposed to be working in school!
Brighton were League One champions in 2010/11, the final season at Withdean, not Champions in 2011-12 which the graphic suggests. Also it was Will Buckley who scored the goals against Doncaster in the opening league game, not Hoskins.
I think they meant "2011-12 Championship Season"
As a Bournemouth fan I'd love to see one of these about us. Brighton are a fantastic team and it's great to see them do so well coming from where they did.
Fantastic video, amazing that you're telling the story of the club I was a season ticket holder at for 10 years at the Withdean and the Amex... But the double goalscorer vs Doncaster was Will Buckley, not will Hoskins (sorry to be that guy)
Where his "reward" was to be sold to Sunderland where he pretty much flopped (although also injuries).....
Quite right!
@@Tifo Another correction: in 2001 it was still the Third Division and not League Two
This video is so well made, the animations are brilliant. The seagulls had me laughing 😂 We are lucky to have you, Tifo
As a Man United fan, one player who often gets overlooked at Brighton is Welbeck. He's been brilliant since he's gone there.
I was born in Brighton, and while I've inherited supporting West Ham from my mother, it means a lot to see them in the PL and performing so well. I remember long chats with a friend who genuinely thought they were going to see them play their last game in the 90's
I’ve fallen in love with Brighton so much over the last few years, I even named one of my dogs after them. I’m so happy to learn more about their upbringing through good ownership and loyal fans; I hope we see the same with Wrexham.
I'm a Stockport County fan and I went to a game at the Withdean Stadium in 2009, we'd just entered administration but were more or less safe from the drop regardless of the result barring some miraculous results meaning Crewe and Northampton would have had to score something like 7 goals each which obviously didn't happen and we lost 1-0 and whilst I was annoyed at the result, I was so pleased for Brighton staying up, I had a drink, sang some songs and generally had a proper laugh with some Brighton fans after the game, whilst I'm certainly not a Brighton 'fan', they're a club I definitely keep an eye out for. Whilst I doubt we're going anywhere near Brighton's level, it's encouraging to see how they have done and with our ground improvements starting this summer and massive investment into the club it makes me optimistic that we could become an established C'ship club one day!
Hands down the best run club in the Prem rn.
It’s hard to keep up the kind of growth Brighton has had, especially with the budgets that they have. But they do really conduct some quality business as well as developing players really well.
The next few steps will be the hardest I think as they want to look upwards, but as a club, they have immense potential.
This short MASSIVELY undervalued Bloom’s impact. He’s changed the way in which clubs buy players. He was at the forefront of x betting patterns (the likelihood of an event in any given game) which became the xG’s that a so prevalent now. He could predict, with high certainty, what team would win. A lot of huge betting firms buy his algo’s, just because they’re so accurate. And he used that same method in buying players - working out who was undervalued. He took the concept of Moneyball and perfected it. The man is a genius, and a deadly negotiator (see Chelsea’s outlay on failed acquisitions). He might not have the financial might of the biggest clubs, but he knows far more than the heads of those clubs.
Graham Potter seems like a victim of Brighton's success at Chelsea
Thanks for making a short and sweet summary of Brighton. I've been reading on and listening to podcasts etc to learn more about the clubs history. I'm a South African fan, started following Brighton 3 years ago, I could never prior to that find an English club I liked. I grew up loving Bayern (and my dislike for sides like Chelsea, United etc was established) but the BuLi largely became irrelevant and all my friends were always supporting EPL sides. Brighton ignited that passion in watching footy again, the joy of winning, the pain of losing, watching attractive football. Never wanting to miss a single game, always excited for the next. Never experienced this feeling with Bayern. I do love this club and I'd love to one day visit the Amex. UP THE ALBION!!!
Would just like to clarify that the two goals against Doncaster in the first game at the AMEX were scored by Will Buckley, although Hoskins scored two bangers for us in his stint at the club. Great video!
Brighton’s a great city and deserves a top club.
An excellent documentary. An incredible story. Thank you for making this!
This video is so well made, the animations are brilliant.
Best managed club in the Premier League and they just keep signing young lads from nowhere and turned them into superstars
Fantastic video, amazing that you're telling the story of the club
Thanks for this video...... Please share more like this.
As a Seagulls supporter since the 2010-11 season, this video made me so emotional to see how far our club (as supporters) has come. Thank you.
amazing video well done
I remember going as a child to withdean, it was a dump, never any parking and was miserable whenever it rained. Although I will miss the bloke who set off fireworks in the woods whenever we scored
I was there for the bus tour while studying in Brighton, was so cool. I still have a Brighton top and mug I brought back to South Africa.
I love how in the thumbnail they place Mitoma and Mac Allister but the reality the most expensive and probably the most consistent best player has been 21-year-old Caicedo. He doesn't get the same love because he comes from a tiny country called Ecuador.
yes. Caicedo gets the highest salaries now. mitoma gets the least. why? he didn't wish to raise his salary, but wished his teamate stay. He is reluctant but his unselfishness and uniqueness attract us.
One of your best and entertaining videos as of late, thanks for the effort. The opened beak seagull that kept pooping up was a nice touch.
Very detailed information
Fantastic video, nice content
Brighton became a joy to watch, with players who are a target for every top team
Thank you for this series and another ones, brief but lovely
Thanx for this 😊
Fantastic video
Its crazy how much we owe to knight and bloom, as soon as we had the amex there was a feeling that we were a Premier league team in waiting
Fantastic video 👏 amazing telling story 😁
Thanks for this
In 1997 I was a 13 year old Brighton fan and genuinely scared that my club was about to die. If you had told me then that 25 years later Brighton would be beating Liverpool, Man U etc. and qualifying for Europe I would have laughed in your face and not stopped laughing for the rest of the week. The rise since those dark days has been remarkable!
Useful information about the game 👌
Nicely said
I’m not a Brighton supporter, but this made me cry
Really impressed 💯
It is nice to see a club like Brighton doing well ⚽
Good information
What a video 👏🏻🙌
Keep coming your videos
Great video
This is actually amazing
nice information
I know this is silly but I’ve been a fan of Brighton’s since I picked them as my FIFA 13 career mode club because I liked their kits and I wanted the challenge of promoting a team out of championship to compete in the prem. Subsequently I figured I’d support them as a club beyond my little video game campaign.
Look at them now! (Kits are still cool too!) 🎉
This is becoming me with fm now😭😭
Stuart Storer who scored the last goal in 1997 was my colleague tutor when I moved to the midlands. Always used to always play the clip!!
They also have Adam "Cruyff" Lallana
you telling me a clause just **happens** to be omitted like that?! no! they orchestrated it!
Very good history about this lovely club need more💯
Close, Tifo. The goals on the opening of the Amex were both scored by new signing from Watford, Will Buckley, not Hoskins. However, this is a great primer for our recent woes. Thanks muchly.
You didn't really talk about their Rise.
They are beating top dogs in the Premier League and are in the top 10 this year.
Good content 👌
Very good 💯
For a Brighton fan born in '98 it's been a great journey
Nice video 👍
Great story and good video. Only thing that separates it from being a great video is the blur when text moves horizontally. E.g. @ 1:28 Bill Archer's and Greg Stanley's names are a bit hurtful to watch while panning, and David Belotti whose name fades in as the visual stops moving is fine.
Cheers
Can we please have some more longform interviews feat. Jon Dog aka King of the Goblins? They've been excellent thus far, esp. his interview with Jonathan Wilson.
Admirable
Superb 👌
Great Well done
Excellent performance
Good job
Nice one
Amazing 😍
I didn't know Brighton's story until watching this video, but even not knowing their history, I would have said it's hard not to like this club. Beautiful stadium, a fun team to watch, and great supporters. I'm a Fulham supporter, but I definitely wish this club and their fans all the best.
I love the seagulls coming around in the background lol 😂😂😂😂
In 2000/2001, the fourth tier was still called Division 3. The renaming of the leagues to Leagues One and Two didn't happen until 2004/5
I'm a Pompey fan but I have massive respect for Brighton. They are everything Pompey must become to succeed again.
Very nice good video 👍
Great vid UTA
More of these please. I feel like you do too much content on teams like Liverpool and Chelsea. Brentford is another incredible story quite similar to this.
The thumbnail artwork is SICK
Awesome 👌
Brighton are what every club should aspire to be. They're a wonderful 😊representation of our city.❤️❤️❤️
Brighton reminds me of Bolton in 2001 when they got promoted to premier league, the squad was great under Big Sam
well played
Brighton is really underrated team... Amazing vdo as usual
Awesome 😊👍
Fantastic vedio
They have a Bright(on) future ahead of them!
Very nice playing boy🍀🍀🍀
Video Designer: How many seagulls do you want in this video?
Joe: ALL OF THEM
Wonderful
Hope we can have more history video like this again in the future
I like the seaguls with the cap on
well done
Very nice 👍👍
fantastic vedio
i was there on hove lawns with my ma and pa when the open top bus drove through brighton (:
Great story of rise and fall
