Paul Stephens is an absolutely amazing trumpet player who totally commands the high notes he plays. This is best-in-the-world high-note performing with both power and good tone.
Personally, I never liked this arrangement of this chart; however, this is the best performance I’ve ever heard of this arrangement. Three monster lead players in the section plus the other two players I don’t know but if they’re in it well you know they’re good. Great job to the entire band. I’ll save this in my playlist.
I'm with you, not my favorite arrangement and the reason is because it sounds more like an athletic event than a good chart. But, there is one recording of Maynard playing this that is even better: ua-cam.com/video/ePeiT3zztNM/v-deo.html
I don't know. I bought the original album in the 70s and loved it. My first live jazz concert was Maynard and he played this along with Gospel John, Fiesta, and Pagliacci. I was literally blown away. Just the first of many times by all the bands still touring at the time. What memories!
Me parece genial la orquesta y los camarografos van muy bien porque muestran los detalles de cómo tocan los músicos en especial los trompetistas gratitud
I'm so thrilled I found y'all. I started playing in highschool jazz band in the mid 70s and played tenor and winds through college. I got to see all the bands touring at the time: Maynard, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Count Basie. We played all their charts and our jazz band director was good friends with one of Kenton's drummers, "Barron" Von Ohlen who had a band in Indianapolis at the time. He played a concert with us - Wow! Every new video you post brings joy to my old heart! 👏☺️
I was going to ask who was playing lead trumpet. Of course I recognize Brain and Roger. But I wasn't familiar with Paul Stephens. Thanks for the post! MF trained?
For reference, here is Maynard's band playing this arrangement in 1974 featuring Randy Percell on trombone (RIP) ua-cam.com/video/hvW9PVhUsfE/v-deo.html
