I just want to personally thank you for sharing with Scotland 🏴 how Scottish Americans have preserved the many ways of our heritage. I was met with lots of hostility in TikTok for saying my family came here from Scotland. I was told there is no way to know that because there are no records- I do not think a lot of people in Scotland understand that america kept very good records of all people who came here and where they were originally from. I live in North Carolina and I’m very proud to have hailed from Scotland so long ago. 💜
Family came over in 1899 after hitting three ports of call between Ireland, Scotland and England. My grandfather's parents passed soon after arriving, and the 4 kids (Grandpa Henry born on the boat) were split up in the orphanage system at the time. Dad discovered surviving family in the 1950's. We have records of arrival, and that's about it. Everything prior to arrival is conjecture.
TikTok is garbage anyway. A DNA test proved my Scottish heritage. My family also kept meticulous records of births deaths and marriages. I'm proud of it and I'm glad you are too 🙂
I wonder what they could mean by "no records"? There are lots of records to research. I found plenty of information on my family from where they came from originaly in Scotland to where and when they settled in America. And where many of them are in present day. It wasn't easy, but it's there.
Exactly so. We can trace our family all the back to a retainer of the Red Comyn (which ancestor was present at Greyfriars). You can find many, many other families whom have kept similarly detailed records.
@@johnmagill9496 I think people react that way because THEY are/were to lazy to do the work of finding all the familial connections btwn Scotland and America… but then most people want the info “spoon fed” to them.
Shaun!!!!! I'm new here! I'm from a small Scottish Irish town in New Jersey, just outside NYC called Kearny. I live in South Jersey now just outside of Philadelphia. I was starting my research for my trip to Glascow ( my grandmother is from there) and Edinburgh (my grandfather is from there) and found you, just outside of Philly!! Funny enough, I have been researching kilts for my kids because the kilt store in my hometown has since closed! You hit two birds with one stone. I'm going to bing watch your channel today! So, exciting!
Rocky here... Don't know if you heard my voice crack at the beginning of that statement in the video, but yes, the emotion is real. That's one reason we love Shaun so much. He's as uplifting and positive as they come!
Americans are proud of the people we come from. So different if all your people are still at home ... having no longing for someplace else. My various Scottish ancestors mostly came across The Pond in the 18th century, and I love every one of them. The common clansmen most of all.
My grandparents came to the US from Scotland (Aberdeen and Inverness) and we grew up with this idea that being Scottish was really cool. Not that my grandparents actually told us that, but they were definitely Scottish and definitely cool to me. Thanks to the Scottish history and the Clan system, as you learn about your personal ancestry, there is a lot to learn about the history of the clan your family may have been associated with hundreds of years ago. This also can give you a feeling of community with other people who have traced their ancestry back to the same clans. It's fun to learn about and gives you a sense of pride.
I'm very proud of my Scottish and Irish ancestry and proudly sport my kilts regularly for myself and my Scottish friends and channel followers. Glad you're enjoying your extended stay in America Shaun.
Indeed. My dad's side came from Irland, and my mom's side came from Scotland. I even have the paper trail to confirm it. I tend to favor the Scottish side. I've been thee twice and absolutely loved it.
I am beyond impressed with the store and owner. And I can see how much effort he has put into the research and craftsmanship put into the product’s carried. Respectfully I’m asking for the women. It would be really cool to see what the women were dressed in. Awesome interview.👍
My youngest son has been wearing kilts for about 6 years now. There is a high school here that has their mascot as a Highlander and their school band wears kilts.
My ancestors were Scottish Covenantors, murdered and deported to Ireland by the English. They made their way to the colonies and fought in the Revolution. In a very real sense, there wouldn't be a United States without the Scots.
My ancestors came to Pennsylvania in the 1850s on my dad's side from Cork Ireland, I'm half Irish with a touch of British and Welsh. Growing up in the Philadelphia area there were a lot of Irish and Scottish. I remember all the kids with red hair in grade school in the 1960s.

Everyone I've known that had a bit of Scot in their family had a book of tartans in their home. I once saw the tartan of my grandfather's family and was very disappointed. It was not a pretty tartan. I think the yarns were dyed with natural dyes. So not as bright colored.

Pretty cool how this business owner actually said it. Its heart breaking watching our country being torn apart 💔 😢 its heartbreaking watching any country be ripped bcuz an over inflated old guy feels entitled. Yes I did go there concerning putin. Hugs shaun and thank you so much for sharing this 💖
My great-grandfather came from Scotland to Nova Scotia, Canada. He was a MacDonald, and my mother remembered him speaking Gaelic. Her mother was a MacLeod. So the Scottish roots run deep.
A lot of Americans like to claim ancestry based upon surname. My name is from the Glasgow region, but the guy that brought it to the colonies arrived in the 1710s. His descendants likely married Welsh, English, German, Irish, and other groups in the intervening centuries. On the one hand I want to have a connection to the past, but on the other I feel like it's so diluted over the years that there's no past to be claimed. I do absolutely love Scotland, though. I've been all over the UK from Plymouth to Edinburgh, and I've never felt more at home there than in Edinburgh.
I want to get a kilt from them some day. I only have 12, one of which I made out of buckskin from a deer. It took five deer to have enough hides and 130 hours to go from rawhide to finished kilt. Now I need to make a sporran to go with it.
Having been a female in high school in the early 70's, when hemlines barely covered the hoohaw, I never understood why any guy would WANT to wear a kilt in the winter!
Just loved this!!! My Grandma was Native American & Scottish… maybe one day I will be bold & try a kilt. I also live across town from Dunedin Florida… a place you might want to visit some day 🥰
The Americans are really hot on heritage - I went to a cup-final (football/soccer) in St.Louis at the university-campus, I can't remember the tournament's name/title but it was pretty much u-17. In the programme, every player's heritage was listed, even the subs !
My middle name is Welsh from my third great Grandmother. My DNA results say 43% Scottish and 5% Irish. I didn’t grow up with any traditions nor did I know I was Scottish nor Irish. Although many of our surnames made me think my family was with Campbell, Moore, Faris just to name a few.

Am a little surprised by the shop's location, though I am more familiar with Pennsylvania's Rhenish immigrant heritage, and admit complete ignorance of Scottish folk in PA, but hey, why not?!
There's definitely a cross-section of American hetero women who really dig a man in a kilt. It's a thing! I know some American men who aren't necessarily of Celtic extraction who are big fans of the Utilikilt, especially here in Florida. Very cool to see your reactions to seeing an American presentation of kilt culture!
I'm curious About how hard is it to drive on the right side of the road after being use to doing on the left in the UK. I watch a lot of British television and wonder how confused I'd be making a left at an Intersection where there is more than two lanes. I can see myself having a line of angry drivers lined up behind me as I drive at a snail's pace.
Having done homework on the Scots in my ancestry, I found that the two clans (opposite sides of the family) were ancient enemies. One clan got kicked out of Scotland for nighttime cattle rustling. The name of their newsletter? The Lantern. 😂
The "No-ass-at-all Disease," lmao! I had never heard that expression outside of my circle of friends here in Southern California. However, we often shorten the expression to the "At-all" disease. Fyi: the famous U.S. Revolutionary War-naval captain, John Paul Jones, was a Scottland-born native.
Bought my kilt at a local Renaissance Festival in Maryland. The shop has the real thing, but I chose to go the easy way and buy a pre-pleated kilt that buttons up. Not authentic, I know...but I wear it authentically. I wear it only at the RennFest. When we visited Scotland in 2019, I did bring it along, but I never had the occasion to wear it, and I certainly wasn't going to wear it just to look Scottish. I would have been spotted as a fake in an instant. LOL. I still need a sporen.
They may be a little more accommodating than some stores, what I still haven't posted all my old memories on this subject, but I'm surprised you took that black watch one out of circulation after getting mobbed by midgies at Culloden...
Aalso, the blue in the American flag still comes from the blue in the English Union Jack flag, which is actually the blue from the Scottish flag, but Kennedy still more beloved than Buchanan, etc.
I hope you get to stop by Valley Forge National Park to see the General Washington winter encampment of the Continental Army. It is not that far from King of Prussia.
Shaun have you been to any of our Renaissance Festivals? I’d love to know your opinion about them. My ancestors are Scottish primarily & for the longest time I thought the history of the Highlands had been robbed from the people in Scotland, because it is no longer taught to them. Then one day I realized that the Highland clearances are Our story here in the United States, from the people who immigrated here from Scotland in the 1500-1700s. Thanks for sharing, great videos!!.

Pennsylvania is like the hotbed of Ulster/Scots!!! But while you were here Shaun, I hope that you had some Philly Cheesesteaks, and Shoofly Pie.
Am a little surprised by the shop's location, though I am more familiar with Pennsylvania's Rhenish immigrant heritage, and admit complete ignorance of Scottish folk in PA, but hey, why not?!
Norse Viking…excellent choice
I'm an American whose DNA is 30% Scottish, 10% Welsh and 10% Irish. I've even dressed my border collie in one of my ancestors tartans.
Excellent episode . Your videos are quality
Love the studio.
I know of a dude who was asked by a woman about what he had on underneath his, and he bent over to show her. She made complaints afterwards.
My standard reply to that query is, "Why, the future of Scotland!"
I wonder what the stupid cow expected the guy to do?
My son is in Endenberg Scotland with his girlfriend and I am going to buy himself a whole outfit too.
Having done homework on the Scots in my ancestry, I found that the two clans (opposite sides of the family) were ancient enemies. One clan got kicked out of Scotland for nighttime cattle rustling. The name of their newsletter? The Lantern. 😂
I was leaning toward the Viking buckle too
I'm another Martin that ancestors came from Scotland.
We have a lone Bagpiper fade away at our family funerals.
I found this video to be most interesting. I guess I never thought about anyone in the U. S. selling kilts. Loved the books bound in tartan😀
We're quite passionate about what we do!
How did kilts come to be, @Shaun?
I would get three pair of hose in different colors and then still only wear one most the time.
It is not that far from King of Prussia.
love the series
Great video! Looking forward to the rest of the series! ^_^
Nice looking kilt! Can’t wait to see how people respond to you wearing it all day…the hockey game should be interesting 🤔 😂
