Thanks for posting this. My Mum's rusty Alfa is featured at about 10.55, and I am sat in the back in the tracking shots!
C76 AWS last taxed 1994. So it lasted another 7 years.
quantro65 what app did u use. The ones I’m using only go back to 2005 2006

William Woollard was a brilliant presenter and had fantastic knowledge
I wish these programmes would come back on TV. Decent factual programmes. I like the reviews on the cars which they then relate to motorsport. The good old days.
Me too, but unless it's some drivel like love Island their not interested in producing good stuff like this
The world is mad place now. Yes I've driven cars side ways, done some mild competition etc, but I can't afford a Bugatti Veyron, so modern day Top Gear is merely, if that, "entertainment". The BBC now fails to; inform, educate and entertain - old TG had that by the gallon, great programme and great presenters. And 5th Gear just want to push EVs, which are, due to dodgy science, rather like the Emperor's new clothes! I wonder what encourages them to push such🤔🤔 Could it possibly be advertising revenue?🤔😉☢️☹️ Back then TG gave you the warts and all and championed consumer rights, now the BBC are just part of the MSBM with PR gurus with agendas as opposed to proper journalists😠🙄🤬
@@musoseven8218Perfectly put!!😊
Yeah it reminds me of being a kid sitting in the back with no seatbelt and one of my mum’s friends chain smoking in the car 😂🤣. Try doing that now 😂. We survived though
That Golf advert is iconic and just about everyone recognises it.
And new Top Gear's parody of it. 😂
This was when Top Gear was a show worth watching, now it's racing Apache Helicopters around a race track. Loved watching Top Gear back then.
You realise this incarnation of Top Gear was cancelled because nobody watched it right? Clarkson had to fight with BBC management to let him reboot it, after which it became the BBC's most popular/valuable show.
@@llynellyn I think Clarkson killed the show to be honest along with all the other presenters, Chris Evans/Matt LeBlanc/Freddie Flintoff/Paddy McGuinness/Jason Dawe, Clarkson is doing a far better job at farming.
It went in another direction because it proved more popular being the entertainment that Clarkson et al brought to it. Hugely successful in that format. This format is a small niche, as much as I enjoy it, it has to make the network money by a larger audience.
Blame Hammond for the rot, it set in over 20 years ago.
love it how old top gear used to flow from story to story
Classic BBC
i love how old top gear didnt have Three guys trying to be the previous three guys
All of these features are still better than "Star in a resonably priced car" !!!!
When I was 18 In 1991 I had the same colour vauxhall, cavalier Sri, reg was E238TEX VERY SMART FOR ITS TIME 👌
Miss the days when Top Gear was actually about cars.
Love it how the moggy guy laughed at the late 80s car probs , now in 2020 I'm in a 90s car laughing at all the new cars I see broken down
That advert .... straight back to late teenage years ... (and the great theme music also !) 😎
It's easy to forget what a fascinating TV series Top Gear has been. I sadly miss it!
I also love the Golf commercial, real classy advertising.
I actually remember that ad as a kid too :)
And new Top Gear's parody of it. 😂
The best bit is VRN JBP 77 is now on a SORN'd Aston Martin
Old top gear....THE BEST EVER!!
Just wish these sort of programmes were still made. Sue Baker was great and Woollard!! And Goffey!!!! Sadly I've just seen that Sue died last year😐
That's when top gear was worth watching
Sir!
When top gear was grown up without being boring👌. I’d completely forgotten about those presenters. A well edited programme.
It also reminds us just what a pile of short lived junk most British (and other, to be fair) made cars were compared with those made in the 1950’s and 1960’s. ‘70’s and ‘80’s were a low point in the British car industry.
Mind you Alphas were lucky to make it to their first mot without dissolving with rust😂
I remember watching Top Gear upstairs in my Parents Bedroom with my Dad as mum would not let us have it on in the lounge.
The headrest on a Fiat Uno would be the least of the problems in a crash. The Uno was built like a bus shelter, in crash you be lucky to come out alive never mind broken bones or whiplash.
How did Top Gear know back in the 80's that cars would have a big screen satnav, multimedia? Take a look at the opening titles with the dummy driving the car. Very forward thinking.....
Wow such detail and info, just like a car show should be!
A much nicer time. Polite, informative and no agenda. Lost now forever because of ...
jews
@@prokoerkoerfeuuififune8936
Your mum.
Sue - "Would this car pass the MOT?"
Man - "No, Sue. It's an Austin Ambassador, we fail all British Leyland vehicles as a matter of course, as soon as we see them entering the MOT centre."
Sue - "Excellent."
By the time they're three years old the factory OEM weight reduction system has done it's sterling job. Bits fall off and others rust.
😆
nikamota a,
So true though, what shit boxes they were
Actually my uncle had them as funeral cars and they never let him down so your very wrong there
This was the Top Gear I loved watching back in the day 😁 I have little interest in those pointless challenges they introduced later but there you go 🙃
The rust on that Alfa was shocking.....
Richard Price
Not shocking, it was quite normal.
Funny how some Alfa's from that era rusted so quick you could almost see it happen, and others just didn't. I have a 1985 Giulietta that is virtually rust free, yet I remember seeing ones of a similar reg in scrap yards when they were only about 6 years old covered in terminal corrosion.
Not all were given primary paint and some bodies were outside without threatment. Strike era
@@antoniovidal4616 - blame the rubbish, Russian steel
@@stevek548 Not Russian.... That was a cheap excuse.... The steel came from the south nearby the coast and it was the same as used in Nord Alfa Romeo's too
That opening is the most 80s thing ever
Oddly, as a kid I absolutely loved Thursday night telly. Top Gear in this format on BBC 2 then Crimewatch on BBC 1. Several other kids at school thought it was brilliant night’s telly as well😂
thanks for taking the time to upload, very interesting
George Donaldson later became a parts manager at Toyotas TTE world rally team.
From a time when Top Gear was actually about cars and not the egos of its presenters 😅
You guys got the best shows.
I remember when I was a kid you rarely saw Alfas without, at least, some rust on them. Even fairly recent ones, like that Alfasud in the video, would have been back then. It's no wonder that are so hard find now, as most of them just disintegrated within a few short years. It's a shame, as they were great to drive.
Unbelievable rust inside 2 years 😳
£12.52p test fee in 1987. £35-£40 in 2014 can't complain
Its 2021 now

So he should have updated his comment?
22:30 Top Gear was like the Open University. ...and who says TV hasn't dumbed down?
My Ford Granada Scorpio was brand new the month this was first aired !
Woollard! The man's a legend.
I like watching old films in which people dressed more smartly.
Top Gear used to be a real car show
Wish I watching this for the first time in '87, I was only 16 :-(
Ditto!
I love This Old Too Gear Series
Sometimes we forget how lucky we are today.
It's official, this is the quietist video on UA-cam.
+Jackomac43 I thought my hearing had finally given up the ghost.
+Sick Note Worst thing is that I just left this video on max volume to hear it and then an advert for some music group came up with very loud drumming. Ouch.
Jackomac43 Christ. An easy mistake to make.
QuietEst!!!!!
I turned the volume up....worked for me.
the 7777 BE Jensen Interceptor is also taxed and driven
Wow the moggy minor is still on the road
Taxed until July 2021!! It'll outlive us all by the looks of it!
I ❤ All The Vauxhall G.M. Opel Cars including the Cavaliers Mk2 J Cars Hatchbacks & Saloons Etc I’d own All of them
Just Great. Thank You.
I’m impressed with the CGI at the beginning of the program, I bet that cost a ton.
As of 2011 that red Sport Quattro as the end only had 3053 miles on the clock.
That Minor is in a beautiful condition
A true show of the time...shame its not like this anymore...utter rubbish in my opinion...
When top gear was all about information on cars. Sadly missed and now replaced with shit meaningless features.
you’re a shit meaningless feature
@@Simon-nk7ji Hes just a boring old fart, that thinks cornflakes are erotic.
@@Simon-nk7ji go f**k yourself, Simple Simon! 🖕
A proper motoring show rather than three idiots messing about in cars the average person can’t afford
Poor old Tyrone!
This programme is as boring as fuck!
Literally!
And I checked! Loose flange bolts?!
What the giddy fuck?!
Who cares?!?
19.11. 1987 then I was born💪🏻
liked William Woollard as a car reviewer.
I was just one month old when this originally aired.
I was two days short of my 25th birthday!
8:07 Three best sellers in Brazil in the 80's - Chevrolet Monza, Ford Escort and Fiat Uno.
Top gear o melhor programa da TV sobre carros !!!!!
How weird that the advert was meant to be about reliability when today it’s seen as an example of 1980s material consumerism
Brilliant old footage but I can hardly hear it :-(
Turn up the volume
This was made well before I was born in '97, amazing how different it is
At 10:49 this is an odd thing to say, but I found it really satisfying that the crease in the Cavalier's wing mirror lined up with William Woollard's shoulder
Dubious MOTs, Alfa's rusting after a few weeks oh that takes me back!
The old Burt Lancaster look alike. I remember him.
Episode on my 3rd birthday 🎉
William Wollard could teach Mr May a thing or three!
Hello I have been looking for years for the episode with the Daihatsu Charade gtti rally car do you have it
Would pay that sticker price now on every car shown...
David Bailey looked so cool. He had his own look not a 80s look at all.
DJA 67 Agreed! In fact I might adopt that look this year! :)
THIS... is Top Gear.
austin ambassador. remember them in the 90's about 25 left in the uk now
Austin Ambassador formerly known as "Princess" what an UGLY car that was.Known as the "Wedge" back in the day for its low front end and arse in the air.It was merely a bloated "Allegro" also an Ugly car from the Austin Maurice range. Rover made some decent looking cars through the years, not Austin or BMC.
I had an ambassador on a V plate and loved it 🙈🤣
It's both hilarious and shocking at how cavalier we were back then about vehicle safety when you compare it to now.
The fiat " you know "
I love how the intro shows an actual actor in a crash dummy costume, because that was CHEAPER AND EASIER than rigging up an animated 3D model of a crash test dummy. How things have changed!
At the time 3D graphics on telly was just an animator with a ruler!
1yrs old in 87 wonder what my planet was. To be drafted to the most incompetent people ever know to the universe.
Where the hell did this come from?love it.
1987 Woman complains about delearship aftersales quality of her Alfa. Watches Top Gear 25 years later, "wow I'm a real petrol head!"

For those wishing to enter the competition to drive a rally Vauxhall Corsa:
Q3) d. The ignition warning light comes on.
Q4) b. A complete loss of steering control.
Good luck !!
was that fishers alfa from edinburgh ?
Do you have the GTti episode November 1988 or 1989
Anyone else check the plates to see what still lives?
Death Row Motors Ha Ha.🙂 That VW Golf advert was an 80’s classic. Don’t know what Walking on the Moon by The Police has got to do with an Audi Quattro though.
Looking up on the old top gear it seems sue baker she was the motor editor sad to say she died last your nice tribute
13:11 looks to me like the front wheels of the Fiesta got some air , going over the bridge/hump !!
Shame this isnt an 87/88 cavalier review
Had a 87 Gold Sri saloon, God I loved that car.
That golf reg is on an Aston Martin
Now 😁
Nice
Probably the initials and birth year
£52 for an MOT at my local centre now lol
Cant believe the rust on that 2 year old alfa!
I wonder if any of the cars on this are still around??
Aww yes, the thorazine yrs.
Nothing has changed with MOT situation since then, shambles
Fuuuuuck those comercials make me feel old
You are old though lol

Loved the old alphas even though unreliable and prone to severe rust.
Is that a Subaru XT in the intro?
That Alfa rusting to bits after 2 years!
Have you found your dad's Morris Minor? She sure was a clean example in 1987.

What part of UK is it
Austin Ambassador. Haven’t seen one in years.
Did you ever find your Dad's Morris Minor?
I forget how boring it was before the clarkson Hammond May era
The Morris Minor is still taxed! MOT not needed.
One area where "they don't make them like they used to" doesn't apply is cars, old cars are awful, they were finished by year five, except some very expensive makes like Mercedes. Cars now are like new at 5 years old if maintained, and rust is a thing if the past for most makes.
