You just helped me with something I've struggled with for years! At the 11:52 mark, where you just drag everything over to your swatch palette, I was always manually going to OBJECT> PATTERN > MAKE. This way does not recognize the clear box for some reason and pattern gets jacked up. It worked fine a long time ago, then for some reason, through versions of illustrator, it stopped working right and I just dealt with it. Anyway, thanks for the tutorial! Now I know just to drag over to the swatch palette!

When you placed your lemons and leaves, where they already prepared as transparent and as vectors? Mine had white backgrounds which made it impossible to put them close together. Can you show me how you illuminated the background and made them transparent? Then how to made them vector. Your lemons have clean edges; how do you do that?
The lemons were isolated (individual) It was a while ago but normally I'd use the magic wand tool to remove what I didn't want. You could also go into photoshop and clean up your images - once cleaned in PS they would automatically update in your AI file. I really enjoy working with Adobe CS There's so many different way you can achieve an outcome. You really need to just keep playing until you achieve what you want. It is very much trial and error
I am following you and so far so good, but I am stuck I think I am missing a step. I cannot put my leaves over each other as you have done because the white background behind the leaf covers the other leaf and I can’t see it. How do I disappear the white background around the leaf or other objects so I can over lay them a little somewhat???
If you mean the sketch/line/working drawing of the jacket, I created it (from nothing) by using the pen tool with no fill in adobe illustrator. I used a layer (layer 1) with my working drawing template underneath which I locked until layer 2 (my line drawing) was finished (then I deleted layer 1) I only drew half vertically then grouped and copied and mirrored it vertically (with a horizontal alignment) so both sides were the same - this created the "Front". I then grouped it again, copied it again, moved it to the right and re-drew it until I had created the "Back" of the line drawing.
Hello, I am reaching out to you 2 years after you made this video. I am asking you to tell me how you prepared the images that you uploaded to your computer for making a pattern design. Did you scan them or sent them from your phone camera? Also, did you convert them first into vector or Ai format first? How did you do that? How did you make your lemons transparent and there is no white around and in between the leaves. This has given me a lot of difficulty. Isn’t there something that will cut out the image nearly to the edge with click of the button? Also, I have been drawing my out pictures. I want to make into vector to make my own pattern out of the elements of my water coloring. How do I separate elements of my painting and rearrange them and make the vector? I am sorry for bothering you. It takes so much time and I am learning as I go. I appreciate it if you make a video about it.
Hi and thanks for your comments. If you can tell me what you are starting with and what you want to achieve I may be able to help more than just answering questions. Lets start at the beginning. I drew the line drawing of the jacket in adobe illustrator with no fill - just a 1 point outline using the drawing tool. I did not scan them or send them from a camera. I created the entire line drawing in a new document in AI. I use a working drawing template to help me draw my working/line drawings which you can buy on my website here - it is set at 8 heads trishnewbery.com/downloadable-working-drawing-template. I isolated the leaves - they are individual. There are so many ways you can cut out an image in AI and remove background is one of them. I hope this helps
What are some fabric printing companies that you recommend? Please let me know because I want to not only create my own designs, but I want them to be printed on a fabric.
What a great project.. a very well known one for online printing is Spoonflower. I have had varied results from them depending on the fabric base. It also depends which country you are in. A google search would be your best bet.
Yes, and also no :) If your background fabric is the colour you want - great - print it on the colour you want, BUT many sublimation printers only print on white bases (white fabric so they don't have to keep a huge range of colours in stock) so then if you want a background colour you need to add it - hope that explains it

You have to isolate the leaf - that or change the layers - it sounds like you need to remove the background
Was the fashion pic that you opened on hour computer drawn and scanned by you? How do you get that image to accept the fill in color?

I am using Adobe 2020 and when I placed my image on the work board 3”x3” it pasted enormous and I had to reduce it. But your did not. Why?
