  • How do API's work? You hear about API's a lot, but what are they? What impact to APIs make for the day to day internet user? API's (Application Program Interface) are actually quite simple. You can use them as building blocks to speed up the process of making your own app. But API's also are used to share one part of a platform (like Google Maps) with other apps (like Yelp, Uber, etc).

What are examples of APIs you think you've come across while using apps?

The awful Twitter API. I used it for a school project and it was a nightmare getting authentication.

Some of the more recent ones I am using include QISKIT API (more specifically qiskit-api-py, for IBM's quantum computing environment API's and SDK). Others include a few AI (Artificial Intelligence) API's: Google's Cloud AutoML various Watson API 's from IBM, some API.AI's AI libs, and the Clarifai.AI API.
It is so cool how open people in the AI related software development arena have become, in that the amount of sharing and collaborative tech advancement via API and source code. It is so broad and deep that it is now often credited as helping to usher in a massive resurgence in open source API's and sharing in general. I tend to agree, as I haven't seen this amount of API, code and data sharing before in my almost 45 years of software development. If you are not following what is going on in AI related to API's and such (and all of the great sharing going on), you may enjoy: www.computerworld.com/article/3120773/application-development/artificiai-intelligence-apis-and-the-transformation-of-computer-science.html as well as I am sure plenty of other links available.

Great information, I'm currently going back to coding and there are so much new things to learn that my college professors never taught us. Really nice video. Gave the insights I need about API's and I'm looking forward to being able to use them in the site that I'm building.

I was working for a company which developed its own sets of API and when I was supporting the devs which had access to our endpoint, I was using the browser's console to see exactly their API request structure, to know what they did wrong. I don't know if in all the websites you can actually see the API request in the console, or was just something specific that our programmers did.

Great explanation! Thanks! Quick question: does my system or program require different code for every website or app I'd want to interface with? For example, do i need separate code to instruct it to go get FB's api, then different instructions for gathering google api data, etc.? Im asking bc, if so, then would it be simpler to create an AI method for recognizing the type of API data required so that it would automatically go and get it through one section of code instead of creating multiple different sets of instructions, if that makes sense? I guess it would be a "smart scraper" but built just for seeking out appropriate APIs. Im a noob so forgive me if my question is ignorant.

Off the top of our collective heads... We'd love to see videos from you about: "What is DevOps?" (good luck explaining *that* with Lego) - "What are microservices?" -- and last (OK this one's a bit selfish) "What is Access Control?" -- P.S. We are huge fans of your work and we tell all our friends about you. xoxo
