I still feel like Hbox from 2017- early 2020 was on another level compared to everyone else. During that time, I played Puff in Super Smash Flash 2 and i would watch hbox for tips on how to play her better. Watching Hbox made me get into this game and has kept me around. From him I learned about mang0 and the other gods, as well as their predecessors. And ive followed melee into its present since. Even after all these years and having dropped puff as my main, I still hold the highest regard for Hbox. Between him and Mang0, its hard to choose who my favorite player is. If i had one choice, i would say my favorite player is Justin "Plup" McGrath
Always a pretty big hbox defender even bc cause frankly leffen is ALWAYS on that cope and for some reason post-ban everyone collectively forgot. The 20XX era was dog water and im so glad we're well past it.
The thing that made me stop being a fan of leffen was him spreading those lies about M2K during the melee me too movement or whatever we want to call that period.
I find it, odd, how Hungrybox, considered the last true god of smash, is considered worse than a sub 100 player when he plays a secondary. Didnt mango destroy somebody with a character he never played before when he was on top? Its so weird to me.
They probably don’t get along very well. Many people in the community have strong opinions about Hbox, people that have spent years around him, so I don’t think it’s entirely just blind hate. That being said, that whole bunch (Slime, Lud etc.) seem to me to be massive jack asses, and Hbox seems to have taken a Gigachad approach to his persona after a while. My best guess is Hbox isn’t the most likable guy, Slime is a toxic POS manchild about it, Hbox doesn’t take his shit and isn’t fazed about it, making Slime not like him even more.
so what you mention in the begining about puff, i call that type of character a "aerial dash dancer" you see alot more of these in ultimate which forced me to categorize them as it helped me understand playing against them in neutral to realize they are essentially doing what im doing on the ground (weaving, moving) just in the air

People just have an infatuation with mango that clouds their judgement. It’s a fact that hbox had inarguably one of the 2 most dominant stretches in the history of melee, has the most major wins, and probably has the most consistent longevity of any player. Mango has an argument since he started a bit earlier, but I believe it wasn’t until just recently that hbox missed his first top 8 of an offline major since 2012. People just don’t want to give credit since he plays puff
I havent watched the video yet but I think it was Big House 7. IMO That was a massive changing point for Hbox. It is one of the saddest wins of all time. No one is clapping except for like 1 guy and Crunch. Hbox turns around to the crowd and looks more defeated than Plup. Mango is Sick, Leffen is actually an awful person, and dont cheer for Hbox. As time went on I saw the first 2 "rules" and they amde sense but the third was confusing to me. "Why does everyone hate hbox?" is something I decided to try and answer. I came across the rumors of him being a bad guy but they had been proven to be wrong and just lies spread by leffen. If he was a Fox or Marth main I would feel different about this. Then I came across the last thing. His lame campy playstyle. Its literally the only legitimate reason people had. There are other more personal reasons like Hbox is loud or he has a punchable face but that varys from person to person. Eventually I realized it came down to Leffen constantly being toxic and spewing hatred at hbox that made the community feel alright about hating hbox. And yes his playstyle was super obnoxious. It ruined top 8s IMO. And then him always being in grands got old real quick as we want fast paced melee. When I started playing you just didn't really see or hear anyone cheering for hbox. There might be a couple of people in the crowd and a dozen in stream chat but that was it. I think a lot of people liked hbox but were afraid to say it. Then Ultimate came out. Hbox started making ultimate content and gained a following of new players who hadn't been exposed to the past and somewhat toxic melee environment. Eventually these people trickled over into melee and just stayed hbox fans. So people started cheering for him and I think this made those silent fans start coming out and openly cheering for the guy. Then the crab incident happened. This of course instantly boosted public opinion of hbox. Somewhere along this period hbox realized that he wanted to have fans and I think he knew if he played campy it would drive a lot of those people off. So his playstyle changed to be more agro. Yes its still slow compared to fox but compared to 2017 hbox current hbox is a different player. Also the ledge grab limit going into effect probably played a small part in this but I truly do think it was more about hbox wanting to change his public image and playstyle. But now I think hbox doesn't care to win so much as he cares to just be there. And I respect the hell out of that. Still not a fan of hbox even with all this said. Even the "legendary" Armada (and I know he's deservedly one of the gods, but some of the worship of him comes across as nauseating) had to switch to Fox to win EVO, so the anti-Puff bitterness from these top guys is just not worth taking seriously. If you want to win "honorably", then win with a mid tier or something. Don't win with Fox and then pretend like your win is more legit than a Puff win. It isn't. Fox is still the best character in the game and that's the reason so many more people have mained him or at least had him as a pocket character. Not because they could win more easily with Puff but would feel shame in doing so.
