I am in my 40's and started using "heavy" drugs in my late teens/early twenties and have been physically dependent on opiates (whether illicit or prescribed) for over twenty years. I don't get "wasted" but I take medically prescribed opiates every single day. I also have a lovely clean house, a bright, loved and happy child, two cats and good family. They call me a "high functioning addict" but I like to think of myself as someone who happens to have a physical dependency like a diabetic does to insulin. Addiction doesn't define who I am or the things I do and I appreciate people who have scientific clout finally standing up and speaking openly about the flawed way in which we view and approach drugs, addicts and addiction.
A brilliant man I could listen to all day. Yes I had to buy the book with the horrible red and black front cover, and a different title even!! I would be angry if it were my book
I’m 60 and a responsible Adult !!! Dr Hart …… You must get involved with the Chronic intractable pain people who cannot get pain meds now !!! They are killing us by the Millions !!!! Please I’m begging you !!! You are absolutely wonderful …… Thank you …… Sincerely Anne Turner …abandoned by pain management in Northeastern , Ohio
@Anne Turner. So many paint patients accept putting the blame for their predicament on people who use opioids illegally and recreationally. But they are not to blame. The drug warriors had done everything they can to Shift the Blame to them, from themselves. I am glad Anne Turner is not putting the blame on them.
I admire his honesty and willingness to admit that he was part of the problem in his early career. One can only hope scientists are as honest as he has proven to be. Follow the data!
What Carl didn't mention was the fact that most of the reason for gangs and costs of illegal drugs are due to the illegality and the very nature of black market items... Without the criminality the market becomes a buyers market in leu of a sellers market...
I have severe chronic pain and cannot get stronger pain meds. I only get two 5/325 of oxycodone daily. That means I am in severe pain for 16 hours a day.
@@malcolmcaden1440 You can ask; that doesn't mean you will get them prescribed for you. You probably will not. Also, if you take the same amount of a drug, and release it more slowly, it will have less effect. What matters, in re to pain relief, is the amount being relased per hour, not the amount being released per 24 hour period.
This guy is exactly right about what he says about drugs and addiction. But but I hate they way he acts about race. It's just really keeping his message from blowing up.

excellent presentation. First heard of Dr Hart on Joe Rogan show. Have read his book and make sure it is prominently placed in the public library!
As always, educational and informative. Will share this.. Thank You..
Love Dr. Hart. Wish the rest of Western society would get on his level. Too many folks still think like Nancy Reagan. WAY too many.
