Update on Galveston bridge one day after it was hit by barge

- Officials give updates a day after a barge hit the Pelican Island Causeway bridge, causing traffic issues and an oil spill.

The bridge, which is actually a rail bridge and highway bridge that parallel each other, did not collapse. The barge struck the railroad bridge which was not, and has not been, in service for years. A portion of it fell from the barge strike, but an even larger portion of it, next to the portion that fell, was already missing, who knows why. Possibly a similar strike in the past. A look at the latest Google Earth aerial dated 2/23/2023 shows the spans already missing. In addition, those spans have been missing since at least 2/2004. The road bridge was closed out of caution until engineers can inspect it for damage.

The next bridge is likely going to be hit somewhere between the dates May 23 2024, and June 13 2024, since a ship or Barge crashes every week or two.
