  • Construction progress on always controversial HS2 project on the section between Chipping Warden towards Wormleigton.
    This shows what has been achieved since our last visit 8 months ago - • HS2 Construction Progr... - which is disappointing little.
    I've tried to label roads to make it easier understand where the drone was flying over.
    Footage taken from a DJI Mavic 3, audio from UA-cam Audio Library.

    I see a huge fleet of off-road tippers parked up ! Also two haul roads in places, one for the dirty wagons and one for the on-road stuff, (I presume !). The usual huge land take for a 2-track railway line !! Hopefully it'll all be reverted on completion; I certainly hope so.

      I find it ironic that the temporary road is in better condition, better painted and better safety that the public road that runs parallel with it.

    There was this many prefab cast sections there about 6 months ago not got very far with those

    Yes currently it looks a mess, with an awful scar across the Landscape,
    this is due to the process of reusing excavated spoil metarial onsite Which will help remodel the landscape, in time it will blend in again 👍

      Indeed, thats whats promised :). But then again, so was more schools and better infrastructure when thousands of new homes were built nearby, which never happened, LOL.

    Thanks for keeping up with the progress i must admit i thought the segments would have been overcovered a bit by now. However there are quite a few nature reserves going up alongside this line and everything takes time to put together. And you know bit by bit it comes together. As to where de boy and gf is this time, well methinks the car park :-) great vid loved it.

      Thanks for your support :). I guess the positive side of the slow progress is there is plenty of opportunity to get more footage of the build progress.

    Nice to see the tunnel excavations coming on a bit, by the time they've finished and landscaped you will never know that they were there.
    One day you will turn up with your drone and get a real shock............trains will be running. Assuming of course you live to be 130 yrs old.

    Just wondering what your thoughts are on the CAA 2023 VLOS regulations?

      I'm in 2 minds, I sort of agree with it for new drone flyers, but think its too restrictive for experienced flyers, especially those that have come from a background of flying model aircraft. Maybe they need to have multiple tiers, rather than the age old problem of trying to legislate against stupidity. For model aircraft, the clarification is nigh on impossible to stick to.

    The video shows how over engineered and wasteful it is. Rows of heavy plant sat there doing nothing - no doubt for 18 months+ waiting to fill excavations back in. It could probably have been built using Victorian navvy methods for less money and less time, as well as employing vast numbers of people.
    I know some people will say it's over engineered to avoid problems during construction to avoid cost overruns - and then they happen anyway. I saw similar on a recent railway upgrade near where I live. Vast sums spent on surveys and planning, followed by vast cost and time overruns due to 'unexpected ground conditions'.

      From the roadshows with what has now become HS2 Ltd back around 2010-ish, I was left in little doubt that this project wasn't about creating something of use, but more about a way to keep the rail industry occupied and busy. So it's little wonder they have over engineered parts, yet will ensure that there will be enough in-life maintenance needed to ensure a large workforce is still needed.

      @@theboy-uk The problem is the construction industry. At this level it's run by consultancies working to 'industry standards' they've created themselves. I work in construction in another sector which is largely government funded and see the same thing. On one of my current projects I'm assigned one day per week for six months at a very high daily rate. I will probably do two days work IN TOTAL. I feel like I'm defrauding them so I often highlight it and ask for more more work, but no, spreadsheet says I'm working one day per week on the project. On a personal level I shouldn't complain but it's a massive waste of money and my skills.

      @@spacemanclips Yes, I've had previous experience of working on large Government funded projects, and its endemic. The rail industry is not different, feathering its own nest at the taxpayers' expense.

      Yes, indeed, a silly vanity project that will ultimately have to be closed or seriously rethought. Hardly anybody takes the train from central Birmingham to Central London.

      @@theboy-uk Always makes me smile how you 'antis' go about running down anything this country tries to achieve. HS2 is just one more thing you people attack with sarcasm and little fact.
      This one tunnel alone shows the considerable effort HS2 is taking to mitigate the local habitats and environments. Its not called a 'Green Tunnel' for nothing. When this is complete it will simply be invisible but of course right now it looks a mess. Because its being built!

      Really?
      The ridership between Birmingham and London was in excess of 13.6 million passengers pre COVID. It is now at 85% of that figure and climbing.
      But of course you fail to mention that HS2 will run from Manchester to London and feed trains up into Scotland which will further erode the numbers travelling by air. Avanti West Coast carries some 37 Mn passengers across its route. All those will transfer to HS2.
      If you want your objections to be taken seriously deal in facts not downright lies.

      @@1chish No, I praise things that deserve praise. HS2 isn't one of those. EWR does deserve support. HS2 doesn't. You're quoted figures are rubbish, BTW. They carry 13.6m passengers a year on the route between Birmingham and London, but do not carry 13.6m from central Birmingham to Central London. Pretty much the same with Chiltern, although the numbers are a little less.

    Many thanks for the high quality video. I see what you mean about slow progress. Thought the 'green' tunnel construction would have progressed a little faster, although they did have that hiatus because of issues with production quality on the segments. Looks like the Highfurlong brook viaduct foundations are well underway though. It also seems that the bridge for the Banbury Road to cross HS2 is making good progress with both abutments and the intermediate columns very visible. These are in a different place to what is shown on the route map I have assets.dft.gov.uk/publications/hs2-maps-20120110/hs2arp00drrw05019issue3.pdf so final design must be different - perhaps to allow one bridge to replace the two originally planned for this area.

      I'm truly disappointed at the slow progress, but this is frequently the case with government sponsored projects, and not just civil engineering ones :(
