The morning paddle

- On this Canada trip I have been starting most mornings with a short, simple paddle. And it is absolutely a wonderful way to start a day.
This, to me, is the epitome of why I kayak, and yet, I know this video won't get a lot of views. If you are watching this, this one is for you.
And for the record, if I tried to align myself perfectly with the rising sun, I couldn't have done it, it was pure luck.

I want to thank everyone for watching this video, I would love to do more of these. I honestly didn’t think anyone would watch it. I did one similar years ago and it did nothing. A couple of people have asked, this was a provincial park in PEI. About 30 miles from the northern tip of the island.
Enjoyed this so much. Extra points for showing getting in and out of the kayak, for those who complained you never do!
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah… that was a ridiculous complaint. Still makes my head spin.
Very enjoyable, no bs video, of getting under way on a beautiful morning. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved it. (the only thing missing was your morning coffee. I got mine!)
Ya know, I have shot coffee (which is kind of a vlogging rite of passage) probably a dozen times and never included it… maybe i should
Thanks for this one silence is bliss sometimes! One detail I meant to ask about earlier, though: What make & model is the autolock carabiner that you use on your PFD to tie up the sprayskirt? Assuming that one endured some (salt)water exposure.
Beautiful blue sky day. We're less that a week past the shortest day and it's been a very wet winter. Time to get on the water myself.
Definitely time to get on the water.
Quick question when traveling can you share thoughts on j racks and saddles which you prefer for the delta kayaks
No preference for the deltas - I’ve used both- specifically but they have very different uses. I did a video a while back I think called “racking your kayak”. I have limited internet where I am or I would find you the link. Sorry.
Loved this style of video from you. A bit of a departure from usual. Question for you… do you put any kind of keel strip on the stern? I am not seeing any black marks on yours like there is on mine from unloading it like that onto the ground.
Nope. That is stock delta. Thermoformed plastic is pretty durable, and I am pretty hard on my boats.
I would love to be on the water right now. Thankfully it is a Club night so I will get on the water today, just have to wait another 7 hours till I get on the water. Nice to see that sun is out. Here it is said to be out on the weather apps on a cloud insight they say, but we are yet again under a blanket of grey.
Enjoy the paddle tonight.
@@AdventureOtaku Thank you! will do. It would be nice if they did a rescue session as I really enjoy them. I doubt it though as I have only ever done it once at the Club when it was just me and a Coach. Most tend to shy away from getting wet, even though it is a very important set of skills to have.
Thanks! Visually lovely - maybe the earth is flat! Looks like you’re heading out to find the answer.
It was a gorgeous paddle. The earth is round.
@@AdventureOtaku lol! keep up the good work.
I often see you emptying water from your kayak at the start of your videos. Do you intentionally keep water in your kayak or is the water incidental? Is it to add weight or thermal mass when it is on the roof? Thanks for sharing your content with us.
It’s because my cockpit cover leaks. The Delta cover I have lasted about 18 months -granted it gets beaten up by the sun every day - but the seals skirts last much longer for me. Thanks for watching!
Okay, so noob questions now that I've got my WS. I ordered NRS float bags from REI and they should be here soon, I'm still waiting to hear from Top Kayaker on hatch seals.
It doesn't look like you run a paddle tether. What happens if you get dumped by a wave and lose your paddle? Do you have a spare of some sort on board?
I'm asking because I've got both a paddle tether and a spare paddle on my SOT, but it's vastly different style of kayaking so I get things are different with sea kayaking.
If it seems from my questions that I'm missing details from your videos, allow me to explain that most of the time, I'm listening to videos while driving on my long commute, I don't always get the opportunity to actually watch them on the screen, so sometimes something that might be obvious from the video isn't obvious when I'm listening to it like it's a podcast. I've already learned that if there's a long pause in your audio, it means you're putting text on the screen and I go back and view later to see what I missed, but sadly time constraints don't always allow me to view every single video on the screen.
I don’t use a “tether” which is really called a paddle leash. Some do, I don’t. Particularly in waves I feel the risk of entanglement is higher than the risk of losing your paddle. I’ve never lost a paddle even getting dumped in surf. On long days or overnight trips I do pack a spare. But again, in 20+!years I have never broken a paddle.
@@AdventureOtaku roger that. Entanglement is probably more of a risk on a sea kayak as well, I hadn't thought of that.
Is that the South Shore of PEI or New Brunswick ?
I think PEI… honestly I have paddled so
Many places it’s blueing together. I’ll figure it out and let ya know…
@@AdventureOtakukinda looks like the south shore of PEI. New Brunswick is much more rugged at the shore
That is the north shore of PEI! Jacques Cartier Provincial Park.
Silents is nice sometimes..
Something I am fond of doing is on the last paddle out of the trip (so trip is done, paddling to the take out) do it in silence and take time to think about the trip, accomplishments, best moments.
The quiet pre-launch rituals. 🛶 I love it!
Thanks for watching.
