Aishwariya Chandrasekar is a visual and traditional artist whose pen & ink drawings and embroidery pieces explore her reflections and musings on navigating the world as an individual, finding meaning in the mundane, and generating moments of joy and purpose in the act of creating. Her work is inspired by her interdisciplinary explorations of topics that drive her curiosity, such as individual and collective behavior, cultural formations, and social change. Her work has been exhibited at Strathmore, Sandy Spring Museum, Towson University, the National Folk Festival, Gandhi Memorial Center and more. She will be having an upcoming solo exhibition at the Women’s National Democratic Club in Washington, D.C in September 2024.
With the support of Maryland State Arts Council Folklife Apprenticeship grants in 2010 and 2022, she has been trained in the traditional Indian art form of Kolam by Shanthi Chandrasekar. She recently organized, curated, and exhibited in a three-generation Kolam exhibition called Thalaimuraigal: Three Generations of Kolam, with the support of a Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grant. She has given presentations, demonstrations, and workshops on Kolams to share information about traditional art form with the public.
Aishwariya holds a BSc. in Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience, a BSc. in Business Management, and an MSc. in Social Anthropology - her pursuits have been largely influenced by an interest in human behavior, the potential of human action and creation, and the relationship between the individual and the collective. Her interdisciplinary background informs and contributes to her artistic practice.
