Professional sports is becoming an elitest form of entertainment. Your average working man can't really afford to take their son to a professional ball game without having to sacrifice something else the family needs. Most families are living pay check to pay check to where a stick of gum will throw them off their budget and put them at risk of losing a service or need. I'm a volunteer coach for our city leagues where we provide $25 dollar seasons of a sport depending on the season. A private league can cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Over the years I have noticed our game crowds are getting bigger and bigger (we don't charge to see our games) and I noticed there are regulars who show up every Saturday and don't have kids in the league. I ask them what draws them to come watch and many of them say "this is the only sports entertainment I can afford". Its crazy.

Inside the NBA is the only reason why i watch the NBA on TV at all. Other than that, i just watch highlights on UA-cam. The NBA is not good enough anymore to stand on its own merits. And everyone I know that is over 35 years old doesn't pay much attention to the NBA these days either, other than Inside the NBA. You see, we watched the early 2000s basketball and got spoiled, I don't know what this crap they are spewing out these days is. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Who gets more views. Regular television, cable, streaming or social media? The latter three are fighting a losing battle to social media. Social media’s next big competitor for views is streaming. I’m surprised that Instagram didn’t buy the rights. Although I do think sports will eventually end up on social media, which will drastically change how we consume and interact with sports. The thing is with Amazon, they can bleed money from a failing streaming business while plugging commercials to their bread winner on the backend, get more people to sign up to Amazon prime if they’re on the fence about it. B they’re the only company that can re-up nba contracts without worrying too much about viewership when it comes to overall viewership vs social media.

Inside the NBA is a big part of why I watch games and probably makes up about 60% of my "NBA media viewing" time (the rest is mostly on UA-cam creators like Mike and Dylan). I have always loved the chemistry between Ernie, Shaq, Kenny and Chuck and I look forward to their show as much if not more than the actual games.
Also, I think everyone should be concerned by how big Amazon is. Personally, I think corporations should be restricted to operating within a narrower industry window and the government should take more steps to ensure that they do not strangle competition/start-ups. Then again, if we did that then our political leaders wouldn't get their nice "donations" and their kids might have to apply for scholarships the way that everyday Americans do and we couldn't have that now, could we?

If the NBA pursues the new rights package, it's going to be a streaming nightmare for NBA fans. TNT relied too much on the right to match, but it doesn't seem it had a right of first refusal. If they had both rights, it would have been strategic to wait for all bids are submitted and then submit a bid that was $1 over Amazon. It’s a HUGE deal where we watch our basketball, especially if it’ll cost us more money in subscriptions to another streaming app to do so. The reality is that these streaming apps are replacing traditional cable TV, which is a huge win for each platform, because it equates to higher revenue, when you consider that individual subscriptions have to be made to view content, as opposed to a household plan to view a plethora of channels. It’s a major loss for fans from a viewership & financial standpoint. We’re likely being overcharged, to be viewing fans of the sport outside of arenas. Make it go away court systems, for the sake of the fans. I understand that the long play of about financial gain, but the cost outweighs the benefits when fans are collateral damage. Fans are both the league & streaming apps commodity. This needs to be fixed for the betterment of future support.

Times have moved on and things change. Something ends and something begins. We as humans generally don't like endings so we have a tendency to hold on to what is familiar because we don't know how, what is coming, is going to work out. It's time to let go and move on and whether that still includes basketball or not and what shape it will take, only time will tell.
One thing is certain, no one has passed away because they're no longer supporting basketball.

TNT screwed up. They could've made a deal but didn't. Then chose to match an offer they couldn't actually match, and they knew this. It's not just about the money. It's about the audience and reach. TNT would have to show they can also stream their content on a site like Amazon to hundreds of millions of subscribers (which they can't). Which is why the NBA rejected them, and why they will easily win in court. Had TNT just made a deal first, none of this would've happened.

  • @markgreenough8602

It’s a simple equation; NBA + Prime = wider international audience. NBA + TNT = better content but USA-centric. NBA has never hidden the fact its wants to engage as many fans as possible b/c it generates more $$$. Is it really that surprising the past five or so years the NBA MVP has been an International player? NBA execs would logically predict international markets will grow exponentially as Luka, Wemby and co. become the now and future Crown jewels in the NBA empire.

WBD is owner of Eurosport and other sports channels in Europe .FOX and Sky Sports are to benefactors to receiving media from TNT to use for international viewers.
NBA is not in position to choose if TNT matches Amazon offer no matter what Silver says ,back in early 2000's NBA was in big financial difficulties and TNT made this deal which was extended twice with just improving the monetary value.Silver was back then second in charge and was really upset how TNT was basically taking the rights for less at least in his mind not to mention that if you see the current TNT deal there is no WNBA...
The viewership will not increase internationally Amazon Prime is not even in first 5 of streaming platforms in Europe, ESPN in Europe hardly shows any games and is more concentrated on Soccer,
NBC Peacock ..what is that most Europeans will say .The situation is similar in Asia everyone around the world loves TNT and inside the NBA...

I kind of get what you're saying, but sometimes the Inside the NBA crew would have a Charlotte Hornets vs New Orleans Pelicans game in April when both teams were basically out of playoff contention and people would still go and watch it. If the casual fan is willing to tune in for 15 minutes to watch a garbage game because of the crew made up of former NBA players, then I don't see how that is a problem.

Amazon better find a way to get fans to watch. The game is losing fans. To be honest unless it was a top tier matchup on TNT, I don’t watch it unless it’s playoffs. Amazon better hire inside the NBA and let TNT produce it. Amazon will struggle with this. I don’t watch live and I’ll just watch highlights on UA-cam.
