The Theo Jansen Mechanism Four Legs Spider Bot is simple yet very efficient bot with scalable design and has good energy efficiency. Theo Jansen himself has shown the usefulness of this mechanism during his ”Strandbeest” sculptures which use duplicates of their linkage whose cranks have been flipped by end sails to create a walking movement. The mechanism consists of a relatively simple 4 or 5 bar mechanical linkage. The movement is created by the relative lengths of the struts. This mechanism belongs to the “8-bar mechanism” category because it contains 8 rigid bodies. One of the links is designated the crank and its motion is controlled by a motor. A toe point is defined on one of the elements and it traces out a “toe path” as the crank makes a full revolution. The mechanism simply works on most of the surface setting including rough terrain.
Theo Jansen Mechanism Four Legs Spider Bot consumes less electricity and it also quite shock and light absorbing. All this features makes the Spider Bot a very versatile machine and can be modified as per the user’s necessity.
