Hey Cath, was just watching the story of last year's winner Bob Long and saw your video.... Simply awesome, great how you put it all together along with your beautiful photography. Loved the names you gave your horses, very fitting, the entire thing put a smile on my face and gave me a giggle, looked as if the pimped van was rougher than any of your rides. Best of luck for this years race and finishing what you started. Go conquer!!! See you soon, Renee

    Hi Kathy
My name is Aiden Spargo I’m 16 and from Australia and I was wanting to compete in the mongol derby in 2020 but I couldn’t find much information or contacts on the web so I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction or tell me a bit about it.
    Regards
    Aiden

Aiden Spargo hey Mate, so there is an age limit you must be over the age of 18 to compete. Positions fill fast I believe 2021 is already fully booked as well, if you head to The Adventurists website you will find the Mongol Derby page there, and a apply page there aswell, 2022 might be your perfect year 🤗

Hi Kathy, just wondering if we could feature some of your pictures in our Magazine this Month, with your photo credit on them. One of our writers has done a smashing piece on the Mongol Derby. We will share your super video of course. Let me know thank you in advance.

Kathy, how much galloping between stations did you actually do considering you had to get your horse's hear rate down by the time you arrived.

Lori Oakley it was really horse dependent.......... so some horses were what are know as the families “nadaam” horse which is there own race horse and are super conditioned and fit, these horse could canter not gallop a vast majority of the section...... some horses would be comfortable in a trot so you would trot up to 20ks of that section other horses would be 3 tempo so you would walk trot canter....... you ride the horse how each individual horse needs to be ridden, hence you need to be experienced and be able to read horses well. Some sections would take on average 2.5 hours to complete other on slow horses could take up to 5 ..... you read the horse to carry it through the section with a nice low heart rate upon vet. I would aim to trot from 5kms out then walk from 1.5 kms and at 500meters I would hope off take the saddle off and walk and carry the saddle the rest of the way in.

Please, how many horses did you use for the entire distance? How long did you know the horses bevor starting the race? How much did you have to read the horses? Thank you.

Hans Müller each rider rides 28 horses each to finish the race, there are just over 1400 horses involved in the race. We don’t know the horses until we select and ride the horse. You have to read horses a lot, it’s the entire point of the race to be a capable horseperson to read select and ride the horse how each individual horse needs to be ridden not how you want to ride. The derby is vetted heavily to ensure horses are taken extremely good care of through the leg, each horse only gets ridden once hence why so many horses are involved in the derby

Def feel you on our food, after it a while it can get boring, as a child, i hated "lavshaa", its the soup made with beef/mutton home made noodles. i still dislike it and im 33, we used to eat it 3-4 times a week, sometimes more, because in mongolia, we often made lunch and dinner, since a lot of calories are required to ride horse all day/look after animals
I think the derby should provide the families a little bit of veggies for the non-mongolian clientele, and some hot sauce and pickled side dishes and fresh bread. 7-8 days of hard riding, thats respect, and i love how they have a vet to penalize them if they ride their hordes too hard
