It's not his first piece, but his first substantial work to be published. His first string quartet, published as Op. 13, was actually written before this suite. And there are a bunch of smaller pieces that didn't get opus numbers. His earliest known piece is a polka for solo violin that he composed 14 years earlier at age 9.

The finale sounds so Mendelssohn to me! I love that Nielsen has the firsts playing so high all the time, it's so satisfying to hear.
He was a great violinist, too. Look it up. 👆
