Mythical Ireland Podcast 1 - does myth describe the influx of the Beaker people?

  • In my first ever Mythical Ireland podcast, I discuss a new study which suggests that 90% of the Neolithic DNA in Britain was replaced by Beaker people in some sort of mass influx around 4,500 years ago. By that time, megalithic passage-tomb construction had reached its zenith here in Ireland with the building of the great Boyne monuments (Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth), but just after reaching this apex there were no more such monuments built. In the Irish invasion myths of the Lebor Gabála (Book of Takings), the mortal Milesians come from Spain and take Ireland from the gods, the Tuatha Dé Danann. The Beaker people, we are told, originated in Iberia. Is there something in the myths that reflects real events, real movements of people? Do the Tuatha Dé Danann, retreating into the mounds (sídhe) represent a dying megalithic culture that was being replaced by an entirely new and different people?

The cruthini or cruthin as the Gaels called the Picts were here in Ireland .
The seven septs of county laois are direct blood lines to them.
The next time you meet anyone with surname Lawlor , o’moore , downing mcevoy or devoy ,Doran and some Kelly’s look and see how pale their skin is
A lot of them will have piercing blue eyes ,
From the house of Ir and the cruthin of Ireland are the seven septs of the ligos were laois gets its name .
They cane as mercenaries to repel an invasion from Munster

Drat! Everything I studied about prehistoric Ireland is proving to be wrong! Gotta buy a whole new library---but that's surely no bad thing. Thanks, oh thanks for this podcast.

Hi Anthony, I have looked into this and I think you are on the right track. Insular Celtic as a tongue was dated in a linguistic study in 2003 as being 2900 years older than the present. There is also Professor Barry Cunliffe and Professor John T. Koch's joint theory of the Celts from the West backed up by archaeology and linguistic residue. I would put the Bell Beaker People who I associate with Insular Celtic as being the Partholonians/Nemedians as varying versions of the Lebor Gabala Erenn describe Partholon as a so many great uncle to Nemed or just his uncle giving two different genealogies one of which looks extended to fit in with the Semitic creationist timeline. And I would claim the Britons are the offshoot of Nemed's grandson Britan's descendants and followers being a representation of a colony established in Britain from Ireland which seems to be the case Archaeologically and Genetically e.g. Rathlin Men burials. Whereas the Fir Bolg, Tuath De Danann and Milesians are accorded descent from two other of Nemed's grandchildren via two sons of Nemed different from Britan's father. It is interesting as the oldest lexical form of Britons that isn't Pritani in the Welsh language seems to be Britaniaid an archaic form meaning "Britan's people (e.g. Britan's descendants more literally)". I would claim the Fomorii were a representation of the Neolithic inhabitants with which the Fir Bolg and Tuath De Danann more frequently interbred with thus why the latter names became semi-synonymous in later writings with the Fomorii and possibly why there is confusion and discrepancies in the varying manuscripts of Lebor Gabala Erenn. Also Mil Espaine means Warrior of Spain and is actually an epithet his real name was Galam an Irish-Pictish form or cognate of Columba. Mil is not related to the Latin term Miles "Soldier" but more likely to the Insular Celtic Miletu "Warrior" which is in Welsh Milwr or lenited Filwr. The arrival of the Partholonians is usually dated to c.2500BCE and the Milesians c.1700BCE. Which is the exact floruit of usage Bell Beaker pottery in Britain and Ireland as estimated by Archaeological finds. It is thus likely the core elements of Lebor Gabala Erenn are true in that a ruling class with their servants invaded Ireland and established themselves there and then established a colony in Britain also. Furthermore the genetic differentiation between the Nemedians proper and their offshoots of the Britons (Welsh, Cumbrians, Cornish and Bretons), the Fir Bolg tribes, the Tuath De Danann peoples and the Gaels (e.g. Irish, Scottish and Manx) would be hardly distinguishable similarly to how difficult it is to tell the difference between Anglo-Saxon burials and Viking burials genetically. Which is why there is such a high percentage of R1b and R1a DNA in Britain and Ireland relating to the 90% population replacement and more particularly subclades of R1b-L21 commonly called the Celtic branch due to its high proportion among those who profess modern Insular Celtic ancestry.

It's been a long time since I read much Irish mythology and that was mostly the primary school stories of Cuchulainn and the Red Branch Knghts, Finn McCuaill etc., but I think I remember some stories of the Tuatha and the Fir Bolg. I see one major flaw in your hypothesis- History is written by the victors and if we are to consider the book of invasions as a history, surely it would have been told from the point of view of the Beaker people who were victorious and not of the vanquished, who were not around any more to write it. Rather than the Book of Invasions, it would have been the Book of Conquest. I readily admit my ignorance, so please forgive it.

The coming of the milesians! just shows how Irish mythology is more fact. I wonder has there been any excavations on dingle where the fianna fought of the fomor on another invasion much later in time

Brythonic, which Mil spoke, tells us what his name means in English: 'a living agent, an animal, a beast.' The adjective MILAIN means 'brutish, a villain.' The Beaker elite did not replace the native population of Ireland, but the ancient priesthood of the isle of Britain was replaced and their headquarters in Orkney was shut down about 2400 BC.

Really good work! In my opinion. So many cultures document the same stuff, especially giants. I seriously believe that there is a huge cover up, of the truth. They want us to believe that used to be smaller back in the day and not tall what so ever, just weak simple farmers. When actually, maybe these people were telling the truth and of course, with time in storytelling, the stories will slightly change but the foundation of the story always stays the same. Gants are being discovered all over the world. Now, I don't mean something that 100 feet tall but 10/20 foot giants. It would definitely explain why and how these massive stones were transported.

interesting but i would equate the Nemed people to the Beakers and the Partholón to the Neolithics.
The Partholón are said to have died to huge lots of plaque. This could have been brought by the Nemed (Beakers).
Just like how the Spanish brought plaque to South America.

The milesians came from miletus.a wealthy city of asia minor that created that wealth because of the numerous trading colonies this city established.from the black sea to dunabe and to spain also.that is the reason the irish people called them spanish.by then they were living for centuries in spain.and many remained in their colonies forever.miletus was an exceptional city.home of many scientists.thalis the milesian and anaximandros to name a few.
