I love the look of the painterly botanical photographs. However, as backlighting was the first thing I noticed, it seems unlikely that you'd have the same effect without use of a light box.
You can get the effect with natural light. Some of my images using the tools in PS are from a natural meadow scene. The light box will give you a clean background, but is not needed to use the tools in PS.
