I bought an X70 in part because of your excellent review. It's a terrific camera that has produced some wonderful images for me. I had a hard time deciding between these two cameras but finally the Fuji's color rendering, film simulations, and the articulating screen sold me on the Fuji. Thanks for your time and effort putting this video together.
Anyone experiencing dust with the GR needs a camera case. I've owned 3 GR series cameras (GR1s, GRDIII, GR) and have never had a sensor problem. If I don't want the padded case, I slip it into a microfiber pouch - the kind that come free with a pair of sunglasses with a drawstring at the top. Fits perfectly, slips in your pocket, keeps out dust and debris. Protect your camera, even if just a little.
Excellent review that concentrates, in particular, on how the cameras function and handle. A very useful comparison since the new Fuji X70 seems to be competing with the Ricoh GR II head on! I would have bought the Ricoh before now if were not for the 'dust issues' and the fact that Ricoh only provide a 6 month warranty on any repairs - crazy! Keep up the good work - both of you.
quite good review, but misses some points. first of all, pocketability: the ricoh GR II fits in a front pocket of jeans, which is strong point comparing to the fuji X70, that doesn't. second: not the ricoh 'also has a similar speced lens' - it was fuji, that copied ricoh's approach 3 years later.
Very good comparison, I also had GR I and X70 side by side and I fully agree with your comments. Despite being a Fuji fan though I would prefer to have GR with me. After 3 years of GR"s launch X70 does not bring any huge improvements plus GR I costs half if you can find a used one.
I would have loved to have loved the GR, but those morons at Ricoh gave it a fatal flaw- the lens and sensor have a serious dust-intrusion problem. I had two, both with cases, both developed dust problems.
No mention of ergonomics/handling which I think is important especially for these compact cameras. Also not mentioned was that the Ricoh has up to 5 mins shutter compared to only 30 sec on most cameras. These 2 points made me decide to stick with my GR, eventhough I love the tilt function of the X70.
+verk magpusao ergonomics/handling is very much a personal aspect. What may feel good to the people in this video, may feel very different for you and therefore I dont see your point in raising the matter.
I have had both cameras, not exactly , but the features are the exact same ( X 100 and the Gr iv) Its a tough call - I loved the X-100 for its looks, the quick-fix manual dials (Manual aperture ring ! ) and the viewfinder. The lens is suberb and the high ISO performance is absolutely stunning. This one really is a vintage looking and very capable beast of a camera. The GR iv, even with a smaller sensor. It comes with a double autofocus system ( Contarst and Phase) an even faster lens then the x 100 and with equal gorgeous Jpeg inside camera rendering as the Fuji x 100. Gr iv comes nowhere near the high ISO performance, but its autofocus is lightning fast. I had just to remember not to expect to much in low light conditions, because the picIQ is not usable at all. Funny thing is this little smurf is costumisable in every possible way a human mind ever could find out.
+dali3091 snap focus is a little bit different though because it's an AF mode. But yes you can find a solution in MF with the X70. You just have to be careful to not move the focus ring.
Thank you for the reply I'll look at a used Canon and Nikon to see if I really want to get involved in Street Photography. Once again thank you for your response.Hank
Thanks, this cleared things up for me! I am an X-Pro2 user and I also have a GR1V film camera. After this review, I am leaning toward the GR mkII. But I think I will wait for the mk III to come out before making purchase :-)
Hi, Thank you for the great video. Do you intend to do a comparison between the GR II and the new fuji xf 10 ? I cant wait for it if it come, and probably your future reviews on the GR III that is due any minute now... Thank you again for such an informative video.
+Mr Moses You sound exactly like the kind of photographer I am. I was so excited when I found out about the x70, thought is was perfect for my backpack trip also because of the tilting screen. But now that I read about the difference in sharpness compared to the GR2 I am very much in doubt again. :(
Yup.... it's all about the handling. The GR line from film beginnings is sublime in it's well-thought design. They're all a pleasure to use as far as I'm concerned.
There is no better "shooter's camera" than the GR - it's something special. There are many good, compact cameras out there, but the (literal) cult following of the GR line exists for a reason... I know because I doubted it 12 years ago, and now I'm a convert. :)
Hi guys, I looked at the samples from your web site. A fair comparison would be to compare a GR2 ISO 200 image, with an X70 ISO 400 image to get the same light sensitivity (same amount of light in both images). And this can better be seen in the images taken at the Castle street (hope I'm correct) intersection. Other than that, I would like to see a comparison between an X70 ISO 400 Classic Chrome image and a GR2 ISO 200 Cross Process image, same scene. I know that you may not have the cameras, but that changes nothing as my desire remain, and the comparison will be great for a lot of us. Thank you!
+peasant vasea with different ISO, the exposure would be different and the light intensity as well. It is correct to use the same ISO number. Unfortunately we don't have the GR II anymore to make that extra comparison.
I'm curious. Lots of images in the video from Porthmadog, Aberdyfi, Aberystwyth and Caerdydd. Are you both perhaps students or working at Aberystwyth? Anyhow, another fine video review and comparison. Thank you.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) Yes, excellent. Just one little thing, and it applies to both of you. Smile more. I'm live near Aberaeron, which as you probably know is a lovely little town. If you are down this way, let me know and I'll get the kettle on.
I have an X100s and it is my favorite camera, but I got the X70 for Christmas, and, damn, it's pretty darn good. We're talking splitting hairs here, though. The original Fuji X100 was an incredible camera once the firmware was updated. And the X100s is, to me, the perfect camera. The X70? I'm growing to like it, a lot. I'll probably stick with the X70, but, no, Fuji did nothing new with this camera.
+septadenata darmahyto touch choice! Personally I really appreciate the GR II for the sharpness, snap focus and extra functionalities like the composite mode. I guess it comes down to the tilting LCD screen: if it is a must have for you, then go with the X70.
Nice review, but come on. The X70 is Fuji trying to wring the last from the X100 tech. I have them. Love them. On my desk now are the X100S and the X70 and the X70 is a POS in my opinion. No viewfinder, an awkward, angled LCD (Ooh! But you can touch it!) No shutter release and no Thumbs Up option. The X70 is way too small, way too fiddly. The X100S is intuitive. The X70 offers features I don't care about jammed into a small, almost unusable package. Sorry.
The GR II , very inconspicuous, looking like the cheapest point and shot camera for who doesn't know (nothing on front, like elaborate knobs or or shiny aperture numbered ring, - think Vivitar - and most people reading the Ricoh Name probably won't know it vs a more popular Canon or Nikon name). Stealth weapon...
what a shame you failed like all reviewers to show us properly how the wifi works on the ricoh. it is a feature that allows you to have your camera around your neck and shoot like vivian maier on you phone... i would like to know if there is any lag between the phone screen and the scene you are about to photograph
I don't recall any smartphone to camera wifi connection that doesn't have some lag on the phone screen. I don't remember how small or big it was on the Ricoh.
Hi. I'm a beginner and would like to buy a compact camera that I can carry around during travels and family events. I have initially decided on a Ricoh GR II but due to bad performance at low light (based on reviews), I am now also looking at Sony A6000. Should I go for the latter? I'm so confused right now lol. Thanks.
The a6000 is a good camera and you can find it for an attractive price nowadays. However the kit lens that comes with it is not great and lack some sharpness. The GR II doesn't do bad in low light, usable images up to 3200 and even 6400 doesn't look to bad. Take into account also that the GR II has a fixed lens, while the a6000 is interchangeable.
Hi Matthieu, just want to ask with regards to the maximum mechanical shutter speed, you mentioned that Ricoh GR II will have a maximum of 1/2500 at f2.8; 1/4000 at f5.6. For the X70 you mentioned that the maximum shutter speed is 1/4000. My question is, the 1/4000 mechanical shutter speed is the maximimum for X70 regardless of aperture? I heard that for the X70, the maximum shutter speed for f2.8 is 1/1250, and it max out at 1/4000 for smaller apertures. Will you be able to confirm this? Thanks in advance.
Hi Edwin, at 2.8 the max. speed on the X70 is 1/1000s. One solution to is to use the electronic shutter if you don't have fast movements in your scene (but it won't work with flash).
What is the low iso on the gr2 and the x70 . It looks like the lowest iso on the x70 is 200 ? Does the x70 have a a TAv mode like whats on the gr2 ? the TAv mode lets you set the aperture and shutter speed you want and the camera pics the iso setting to get the correct exposure and the TAv mode can have a iso range that you pic . I know the gr2 lets you down load raw files over its app ,does the x70 let you down load raw files to your phone ? I know the gr2 does not have a anti-aliasing filter which makes the photos sharper ,does the x70 have a anti-aliasing filter ?
The GR starts from ISO 100, whereas the X70 starts from ISO 200. The Fuji has an extended low value of 100 ISO, but being extended it means you can get less dynamic range than the normal value. There isn't a TAv mode per se, but if I remember correctly you can set Auto ISO while working in manual mode. The X70 doesn't have an anti-aliasing filter either, but I guess the sensor+lens combination of the GR works better.
Why woud you want a camera that only goes down to 200 iso when other cameras like my canon has a 80 and a 100 iso setting . Its not extended its a setting and part of the cameras dynamic range . Why would you want a smaller dynamic range like in the fuji ?
Honestly it's not a big deal, it just means that if you want the best dynamic range, you start from ISO 200. In real world use the difference is minimal. I wouldn't worry about this when deciding between the two cameras. There are more important things. All Fuji cameras start from ISO 200 (except the latest generation like the X-T3 that starts from ISO 160).
For the Fuxi X70, are the film simulation modes available only in JPEG or also in RAW? Also, on the X70 would you get better results shooting RAW or JPEG? I'd naturally assume RAW but given what people have been saying...!
They are available in RAW with certain softwares. Lightroom for example includes all the film simulation modes. You can also use the RAW File Converter by Silkypix (free). With the RAW files you have more dynamic range and can vary lots of settings including colors and temperature. If you want to post process your images, RAW is the best choice. If you want good results straight away, the Fuji JPGs are excellent.
They actually quite close. The main difference are the color profiles. The X70 has the film simulation modes that are really nice while the picture profiles of the GX80 are ok but not the best you can find around (of course this applies to the JPG mainly). So X70 has better colours, dynamic range and high ISO performance are similar in my opinion with the X70 having a little advantage. After that, they are two different products because of the interchangeable lens option for the GX80. The 5-axis stabilisation of the Panasonic camera is also great.
Thanks so much for replying so soon mate I appreciate it and thanks for the information. I really couldn't make my mind up on these two because they are kind of similar in price, within £100 of each other. Do I want 4K or do I want better stills? I think the latter :) Thanks again bud.
Nice review. Just want to ask, is there a distance scale in x70 once you are in manual focusing zone mode? Meaning you could see how far (in meters or feet) the focus is? Or you just have to rely on focus peaking?
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) thanks for the reply Matthieu. so it's basically similar with the snap mode of the ricoh gr ii? i just want to determine what the experience is. in the x70 you adjust the distance scale via the focusing wheel. in gr ii, there's an up and down button to change the distance. is my assumption correct?
The philosophy is similar but the snap mode is an autofocus mode: you tell the camera to focus at a precise distance (for example 2m), no matter what's in front of it. So the GR II doesn't need to acquire focus on a specific zone of contrast or a subject but just to focus automatically at 2m. It shows you a distance scale as well, so you know that focusing at 2m and f/11, pretty much everything is in focus. You don't have to worry about turning a focus ring or make sure it doesn't turn accidentally. With the X70, you have to do this in manual focus mode with the focus ring but you have to be careful to not alter the distance with the ring during use and double check if you turn the camera on and off because the ring is not mechanical but a fly-by-wire type.
Hi, thank you for the review. Do you know if there's a way to shoot remotely on the GR II with the wifi? Or if not, is there a way to plug in a wireless remote?
I had a sony rx100 and it was good but then my son went to college with it. I bought the GR and found it a lot better in sharpness and colour. If the fuji x70 is about the same level with GR....or you can look for a more direct comparison.
No particular hype, it's just a nice function to have on the GR II since you can't adjust zone focusing on the lens itself. You set a precise focus distance on the camera and it will always focus on that distance every time you press the shutter button, regardless of your subject or scene.
both is very nice (really haven't experience in fuji x70) BUT one thing that actually kills all idea is A price. it so huge overpriced that you should be the " rich idiot" to buy. really in a holiday DSLR double zoom bag kit apsc from both leaders you can find in a USA for $400-450. sony a500/510 $289-350 and here. in a fackt, I believe that nobody buy it. in a fact living in NYC and being frequently im most photographed places I do not see those cameras at all. I can see x100 like 4-5 in a year -one Russian tourist other from Japan, but not x70. accidentally one old photographer ask me to setup his ricoh gr2, so i was very impressed, especially in HDR, except application in iOS that not work normally. heck I even see Leica medium format in the street (once but it was enough for one fuji idiot call me liar, liar only for the fact seeing leicaX on the street )))hi Mattias ))) but not X70. so till fuji and Ricoh do not publish the real number of sales I consider that only reviewers have this for money)))

when I first bought the gr my photography friends laughed at me, (I used to use a 5d2), until they saw the results. 2 of them now own Ricoh gr's.
+canturgan yep, that camera can make people change their mind :)
+canturgan I am obsessed with my GRii - love it. Don't feel bad leaving my DSLR home.
Well said, guys. After all isn't it about the end result?
Daido Moriyama mostly used a GR.

I have a GRii and I LOVE IT!
Thanks! Glad it was of help!
Probably the best comparison on the 2 models. Very useful and well done!
Finally a good objective review, not some guy bragging about his camera.
+Paul Bailey thanks!
Thanks for a great review! I appreciate how you divided the information between you two and trying to be as objective as possible. Nicely done!
Thats how reviews have to be made!!!!! Thanks a lot!!!
quite good review, but misses some points. first of all, pocketability: the ricoh GR II fits in a front pocket of jeans, which is strong point comparing to the fuji X70, that doesn't. second: not the ricoh 'also has a similar speced lens' - it was fuji, that copied ricoh's approach 3 years later.
Good luck with the sensor dust if you keep it in your pocket
Very good comparison, I also had GR I and X70 side by side and I fully agree with your comments. Despite being a Fuji fan though I would prefer to have GR with me. After 3 years of GR"s launch X70 does not bring any huge improvements plus GR I costs half if you can find a used one.
Excellent comparison on these 2 premium compacts!!! The design and upscaling of the native crops on the X70 has me sold as this being my pocket cam!
I would have loved to have loved the GR, but those morons at Ricoh gave it a fatal flaw- the lens and sensor have a serious dust-intrusion problem. I had two, both with cases, both developed dust problems.
Doctor Morbid use a vacuum cleaner in front of the lens but suroît touching it,if you’re lucky you’ll get the dust out, thank me later.
If only the GR had a flip screen. Need one for self timer shots. Not having one is a deal-breaker for me.
Brilliant review. I have original GR and I am totally in love with it. Considering buying a black X70 to replace it.
+Jon Bushell
So you're in love with the GR but you want something else?
Well, that make sense...
+Jon Bushell bad decision mate, fuji is heavier and thats the point for me, the results are the same .
+Jon Bushell I'd stick with GR
Absolutely packed with useful information, thank you once again Heather and Mathieu
great video, well put together and great info, thanks, subbed
Thank you for your review. I love my GRii for my street photography!
Excellent review for both brand, and appreciate of your work.
now its about taste and feel to choose it.
Bravo !
+verk magpusao we find both ergonomics to be good. The difference is more related to the ease of use and various dials/buttons etc
+verk magpusao ergonomics/handling is very much a personal aspect. What may feel good to the people in this video, may feel very different for you and therefore I dont see your point in raising the matter.

Lots of information, also really liked the back & fourth, the way u made the video.
That metallic aperture and focus ring on the x70 is wish come true to have the retro camera without the film hassles
snap focus works on x70 to. set it on manual and there is the scale where you can set the focus distance.
+dali3091 snap focus is a little bit different though because it's an AF mode. But yes you can find a solution in MF with the X70. You just have to be careful to not move the focus ring.

Fantastic and informative presentation. Thank you so much :)
The Ricoh GR2 has a better grip but the Fuji X70 has better Jpegs & features. Which do you prefer?

got the gr for 285 pounds last year... bargain, although the af in lowlight is abysmal!
The proprietary charging/data transfer connection on the Ricoh is a real turn off. Why not micro-USB?
I bought GR2 today before checking this video out so I l...like GR2(sad beeps)
The Ricoh GRII is actually $50 more than the X70 here in Australia! Did you personally have any issues with dust on the GRII?
Nope but to assess that I would probably need to use the camera for several months. I only got it for three weeks for review purposes.

i bought a 2nd hand x70 and it blew me away
if you like petersen, sobol, moriyama, ect ricoh is the best
Finally, a review where someone put the x70 in a pocket! I know it is so random, but it is needed!
+Peter Silzer it's the little things that count :)

I have a Lumix LX100 but I LOVE the GRii images
At last; a decent video on these cameras -well done!
very nice video. it's almost complete but did I miss the battery life section? Are there removable batteries?
is quality high enough of fuji x70 for photostocks?
Does external GV-1 viewfinder covers 100% frame (28mm or 35mm) for Ricoh?
Ricoh wins hands down for image quality

This is an excellent review/comparison
Which is better for the amateur/ beginner?
I would say X70.
Thank you for an excellent video!
I have the GRii and I love it!
Hey Matthieu, I got a simple question. Which one you would buy?
Probably the GR II. Love the sharpness and ease of use of the camera, plus snap focus is pretty handy.
How bad is X70 then?
It's not a bad camera but I found the GR II sharper. The X70 has better colours though and a handy tilting/touch screen.
Could the fuji be as sharp with the proper RAW converter?
12: 46-12: 50 what focus mode? I didn't understand this part.
Snap focus mode
Hi. I'm a beginner and would like to buy a compact camera that I can carry around during travels and family events.
As always thanks for the confirmation Mathieu.
Thanks Mathieu! I managed to find the upgrade to the Adobe DNG converter, which can convert Fuji RAW to DNG. I'll see what the JPEGs look like!
I know they are different cameras but what is the best for stills out of the x70 and the Panasonic gx80? Thanks in advance 😬🖖👌👍💪🙏💃
I think the latter :)
Thanks again bud.
Matthieu,
Which of the two camera have a brighter LCD in sunlight?
Thanks
We found the X70 LCD to be a little bit brighter.
Nice review. Just want to ask, is there a distance scale in x70 once you are in manual focusing zone mode? Meaning you could see how far (in meters or feet) the focus is? Or you just have to rely on focus peaking?
Yes there is a distance scale on the bottom part of the screen in MF mode. It also shows how much is in focus according to the aperture used.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) thanks for the reply again. appreciate it
Hi, thank you for the review. Do you know if there's a way to shoot remotely on the GR II with the wifi? Or if not, is there a way to plug in a wireless remote?
Yes you can by using a web app that you can access with the native browser of your mobile device (once you are connected to the camera's network).
Great review video!
Great review, thanks
Is Ricoh GR2 IQ better than the previous version Ricoh Gr?
+Cody Robinson there's a new processor and some enhancements with long exposures and high ISOs if I remember correctly.
Thank you for this review!
nice work as always.
the exposure compensation button on the gr is the same as adjusting the fstop?
No, you can adjust the exposure compensation with the +- button on the rear and the aperture with the dial on top.
I am looking for a new camera. I am torn between the fuji x70 and sony rx100. Which do you like better?
I had a sony rx100 and it was good but then my son went to college with it. I bought the GR and found it a lot better in sharpness and colour. If the fuji x70 is about the same level with GR....or you can look for a more direct comparison.
Thanks for your lovely video!
Excellent review
Why all this hyper for snap focusing (real name is focus trap by the way)? Any old cheap manual lens have this feature. this is just marketing.
No particular hype, it's just a nice function to have on the GR II since you can't adjust zone focusing on the lens itself. You set a precise focus distance on the camera and it will always focus on that distance every time you press the shutter button, regardless of your subject or scene.
Liked. awesome review, thank.
excellent review, thx!
I'm so torn between :D
Great photo at 9:58!
thanks!
the fixed screen on the Ricoh is a deal-breaker
Very good review.
GR2 is better.
This a camera for street shooting. You do not really need a viewfinder. It defeats the purpose, just as a lens hood for this camera.
great! Thank You...
both is very nice (really haven't experience in fuji x70) BUT one thing that actually kills all idea is A price. it so huge overpriced that you should be the " rich idiot" to buy. really in a holiday DSLR double zoom bag kit apsc from both leaders you can find in a USA for $400-450. sony a500/510 $289-350 and here. in a fackt, I believe that nobody buy it. in a fact living in NYC and being frequently im most photographed places I do not see those cameras at all. I can see x100 like 4-5 in a year -one Russian tourist other from Japan, but not x70. accidentally one old photographer ask me to setup his ricoh gr2, so i was very impressed, especially in HDR, except application in iOS that not work normally. heck I even see Leica medium format in the street (once but it was enough for one fuji idiot call me liar, liar only for the fact seeing leicaX on the street )))hi Mattias ))) but not X70. so till fuji and Ricoh do not publish the real number of sales I consider that only reviewers have this for money)))
both this guys from 1985 with Michael J. Fox
This one time, at band camp...
