Lol I just saw your segment on “How to cut up a Whole Chicken”, and watching you and your show reminded me of how my wife used to watch you on her iPad, she used to watch whenever she had the time which was almost everyday, sadly she had recently passed away in her sleep in December just before Christmas and her 54th birthday. I used to care for her as she was a Kidney patient and had her left leg amputated below her knee, she was a cheerful wife for the most part, but watching you made her very happy, at the end of each show she would respond to you when you said “Good Bye!” And simultaneously say “Good Bye!” With you. So watching your show brings back a lot of tears of sadness and smiles of happiness, she really loved too cook various types of dishes but really loved to eat Korean food often, we live in Hawaii so having a large variety of ethnicities she loved mostly the Asian foods as she herself was 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 Japanese and half Hawaiian. So as I debate to myself as to continue to watch your show as my wife had... or not...? I think to honor her... I would watch whenever I get hungry in remembrance of my wife. I would like say thank you for making my wife very happy and joyful whenever she watch your cooking shows, In Hawaiian we’d say “Mahalo” which means Thank You Maangchi and have a beautiful day! Eddie.
I'm Indonesian and when I was little I've read a story about this 'wise' person who'd been asked by a family to divide a chicken for them. The 'wise' (actually, 'slick' is more likely 😀) person then said 'The father gets the head because he's the head of the family; the sons gets the legs because they will support their own family; the daughters gets the wings because their husbands will take them away; and the mother gets the backbone because she supports the family all the way'. The family was so pleased with this 'wisdom' and wanted to give the man a gift, but the man said 'Just give me what's left from the chicken, it's good enough for me' ... and he got away with the chicken breast 😀
I am 66 years old and I have cut so many whole chickens. Thanks to you, I now know about the fat line between the thigh and leg as well as the chicken breasts. So much easier to cut! I love your videos. Your humor is perfect. Also, I don't know why you add subtitles I can clearly understand everything you say. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much for your nice words! : ) I'm so happy to hear that this video is helpful to you! BTW English subtitle is also for those who can't hear well.
Indonesian and Greek captions are available now! I'm so impressed with my vieers who volunteer to translate captions, for no other reason than to help others in their country enjoy my videos.
Maangchi in my country (Malaysia) , i dont whether others family do this too... but we usually bought it as a whole and ask the butcher to cut it up for us. my family usually ask the butcher to cut off the feet and skin away hoho
I teach culinary arts in Texas, I love how you handle chicken fabrication. Very professional approach. I have to show my students a slightly different method when we get to the breast part, but the way you preformed this was exactly how I do it at home.
You are delightful! Now I know exactly how to cut up my chicken, which I have never done before. You are so charming and fun to watch! I had a smile on my face the entire time😊Thank you!!
I was trained as a chef so I always buy whole chickens and portion them myself, my favourite part is the legs/wings, my daughter calls the dark meat ‘wet meat’ because it is the most juicy part! We enjoy your videos so much, I’m making your honey butter chicken tonight! Love from the UK X
I'm from Trinidad in the Caribbean and I love watching and trying your recipes. I have a brother (Nigel) that has autism and he's obsessed with your videos. It's the only thing that really keeps him calm lately, so thank you a lot and keep up the great work. We love you.
My mom is German and they also don't give knives or anything SHARP for a gift. She says it can cut off your friendship. So we always give a penny or so back that fixes it! I love that you also have that tradition!! I love your recipes! I made radish kimchi yesterday! For the 4th time so far!! No more buy it at the store fir me! Homemade is so much better!
Thanks for the nice comments everyone! In Uganda there two most important parts in the chicken are the gizzard and the back. These are for the head of the family or the guest for whom the chicken was slaughtered for.
Oh Maangchi you're so sweet, cute and adorable... This video is so helpful specially for us who's starting to learn how to cook.. thank you... watching all the way here in the Philippines.
I love basic instructional videos like this! I'm a college student and I rarely cook because I don't know where to start from scratch so this is really helpful.
Hello Maangchi! Thanks for showing me how to cut a whole chicken. In my country NIGERIA, the head and the thigh are most important to the elderly. But what I love in chicken is the Gizzard!

Just this morning came on your website by chance. Better than paid channel cookery programs. U cook like a pro, washing, cleaning up as you go, accent delightful, so so therapeutic watching your show. I am hooked
Once you know how to butcher; its so easy and you save money. Maangchi, I love you and your so adorable. You always brighten up my day and bring a smile to my face. 💞
Wow. You are so sweet, funny, articulate and knowledgeable. And your beauty shines from the inside out. The belief that gifting sharp items to loved ones brings bad luck is prevalent in Southern parts of India too.
Maangchi you are the best. When I miss Korea or want to make delicious authentic Korean food I watch your videos. You video style is so relaxing and brings a smile to my face. And, when I lived in Itewon and used some of your recipes my husband's Katusa friends complimented me on the food. They would say it was like from home which made me feel so proud.
When I first moved away from home, my Grandmother gave me a knife as a "housewarming" gift, but told me I had to pay her a penny, as knives were bad luck as gifts. So Maangchi, some of we Americans have a similar practice as you Koreans. It's a small world, after all, to quote a famous song. Thank you for your chicken cutting demonstration. It's very similar to how I do it, but, until you told about it, I didn't know about the oysters. So, thank you, so very much. I will, from here on!
I'm so excited to have found this vlog because I've mingled with Koreans and love their culture ....the way you show us how to prepare basic meals is quite fulfilling thanks
Spanish (Latin America) caption was submitted by one of my viewers! Thank you! Check out the description box if you like to see who did all the captions.
In India, we came to know about the pieces when they came in our plates, the butchers here just chop chop chop the whole meat into small pieces. No one has that much time to separate body parts. Good video by the way. Very informative.
In Germany, people prefer chicken breast because its very lean and considered healthy meat choice. But its also very tasteless and tends to be dry. So, my family buys legs and roasts them in the oven after marinating. So skin is crispy and inside juicy and soft. However, almost every part of it is eaten. Hearts and stomach, too. Just less popular.
Hi Maangchi, Out here in Africa it is the drumstick and the wings. I have just cut up 10kgs of chicken legs for the freezer. And deboned 10 turkey legs. Many thanks for the wonderful videos. Kind regards David.
Hello, in france what is considered the best part is the oysters, we call it sot-l'y-laisse, meaning approximately : only idiots leave that on the carcass without eating it. Thanks to that video i will save some money buying the whole thing and cuting it! thanks!
Hi Maangchi, I am new to your channel and I absolutely adore you! My daughter, mother and I love watching your videos. I am from South Africa and our favourite part of the chicken is the chicken thigh. Usually we give the drumsticks to the children because it is easier for them to hold and eat. I am about to make dinner and I am going to try your Honey Butter Chicken recipe.
You reminded me of my Dad.. he always had a way of making us understand the essentials.. n one such thing was cutting a chicken...passed on through generations..these days it's a lost art..the present generation does not have the time or interest.. we Indians n Koreans have many things in common n one such thing cooking.. Love from India 🇮🇳 ma'am
Mr. Maangchi, love your style. You keep your videos useful and entertaining in equal measures. Your videos don't only talk about food, but they are such a good window into Korean culture as well. Love from India. Btw, in India, mostly, leg piece is in the highest demand. But some people do like other portions.
Thank you Maangchi for sharing this method -I always wanted to learn how to do it. Thank you also for your awesome recipes. I have been making gorgeous kimchi thanks to you and have created kimchi addicts amongst my polish and english friends. My husband loves me more for the spicy porc 😊 Please never change! !! You always make me smile xxx
Ahh I loved this video. Very helpful! I have a problematic rooster in my chicken flock that I am about to butcher for my family to eat and I needed to know how to do this. Very helpful and I love your personality and good energy. I subscribed. Thank you :)
I never learned how to cut-up a chicken, but after watching your video a few times, I did it. My chicken pieces were a little funny looking, but I could identify each one, lol. Before I try again I must buy a better knife! Thanks for the video, you’re a great teacher. 🌹💕
Wow, in India we do not gift someone knives either or chilis for the same reason. We have the same custom and "sell" it to the person for a small amount of money. It's always facinating if other cultures have the same customs. Thanks for sharing this video Maangchi. By the way: We also do like the chicken legs because its juicy. Greetings from Germany. :-)
Super helpful video. I watched various ones before doing my first chicken and messed up. This is the easiest to understand and now it goes much better ! Love using the various parts for homemade chicken stock - so getting the whole chicken makes sense and it’s not that much more work to prep
Your english is brilliant! One thing - you wrote "it has so many of the chicken's skin", when instead we say "it has so much of...". This is because we say "many" for things you can count (e.g chicken thighs, green onions) and we use "much" for things we can't count (e.g skin, hair). I hope you don't think I'm being rude, I just wanted to help you with your English. What is your favourite chicken dish from your home country? :D
Trust me, it's not just a Filipino thing to like to use the whole chicken. Some in American cultures too...especially in the South Eastern part of the country. You also see certain parts being used to make soup.
Your cutting the chicken and presentation is wonderful thank you I am EMMANUEL from Nigeria and I am hoping to be a chef some day of course with other multiple streams of businesses
Hi maangchi, you are doing good... the way you speak brings smile on me and it’s nice you share lots of memories of yours it reminds our families tooo...
Thank you Maangchi , I'm a polish sausage maker , but will start chicken goodies this week , thank you very much how to cut a chicken in right way , best regards from my wife and me.
When my mom ask me to cut the whole chicken i took at least 30 mins to cut it BUT Maangchi she took only 10:56 mins to clean+cut+cook+eat wow just amazing 💕♥️
Thank you so much for this Awesome Video. Wonderful Presentation. You are such an awesome cook. In Tanzania, The thigh is the most loved part by many. Enjoyed the video, Subscribed, Thanks!
I always get compliments about the way I cut my chicken. All thanks to this video! That I watched nearly 4 years ago🤣 and now I will pass this knowledge to my children
Hi Maangchi, I'm from Bangladesh and even though we cook chicken very differently from koreans but we cut it the same way you showed for traditional chicken curries but the thing is most of the bengali moms don't cut the chicken with a knife they use another kind of cutting device that we call boti but I don't know how to cut stuffs with a boti so for a long time i couldn't cut chicken at home lol but after watching you cutting it perfectly with a knife I now don't have to buy cut pieces anymore thank you so much 💜💜
Thought that the video was really well presented and thought out. I never knew that there was a fatty line to separate the thigh from drumstick. I would always pop the joint out to see where to cut. I enjoy the oyster part too. Didn't know what they were called though. You did a good job on the cut up tutorial. Take care with Love through God and Jesus and The Holy Ghost,
Our chickens from the store always had the back in the package ( I'm talking a long time ago 50 years or so ) my mom always loved the wings and I always loved the back seemed to have more favor. Enjoyed your video have a nice day EVERYONE 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I was really afraid to ask my mother how to do it cause she did it front of me ....😹i see this and its saved me from my mother anger so thanks very much
i just love u so much , i had to call my baby gal after u . am always glued in your videos and my husband got addicted to your videos too so in your honor we gave our baby ur name.
Hey maangchi! I just want to let you know that I cut a whole chicken for the very first time today and according to my mom I did pretty good. 너무 너무 감사합니다!!! 💕

Gizzard and wings my favorite! USA, Arkansas

My family was very poor. I remember eating chicken back soup. It was always delicious!
Wow the back 🤔🤔🤔 i would have never thought
It's the same in Burkina Faso 🇧🇫.
The gizzard and the back are for the patriarch.
The legs come right after but are usually for the house lady.

"Along the line, the fat lie"
That is some pure chicken cutting wisdom right there. Easy to remember too.
You are a blessing, Maangchi.
In Italy chicken legs are usually reserved for children as they're easier to eat with hands :)
This is how I cut my chicken. I also could relate to your story telling about your grandmother. I loved watching your video.
Hi Maangchi, I am new to your channel and I absolutely adore you! My daughter, mother and I love watching your videos. In my country, the Philippines, every part is important. We always want to eat non-stop😁😂
But it's probably the thigh and leg though, since it has so many of the chicken's skin.

Trust me, it's not just a Filipino thing to like to use the whole chicken. Some in American cultures too...especially in the South Eastern part of the country. You also see certain parts being used to make soup.
Your cutting the chicken and presentation is wonderful thank you I am EMMANUEL from Nigeria and I am hoping to be a chef some day of course with other multiple streams of businesses
i had never thought to follow the fat lines, i usually just feel for the bones where they join!

Helloo!
The fat line is a great trick that I have never heard! Thank you!
Very interesting the story you told about selling your mum the knife rather than giving it to her as a gift. I love your stories, Maangchi.
I always get compliments about the way I cut my chicken. All thanks to this video! That I watched nearly 4 years ago🤣 and now I will pass this knowledge to my children
Cool!
I like your grandma from your father's side. I admire her chicken killing skills 😂
너무 차근차근하게 설명해줘서 한번에 이해했네요 ㅠㅠ 한국어 자막 감사합니다.
Ms.Maagnchi😍Thank You soo much for this most helpful video!?! I always wanted to know how to cut up a whole chicken the proper way!?!
maangchi your cooking style is wonderful, i love that...
I use the back bone to make chicken soup. I love the “oyster” too. Yum.
Take care with Love through God and Jesus and The Holy Ghost,
Thank you so much for your nice words! Cheers!
Our chickens from the store always had the back in the package ( I'm talking a long time ago 50 years or so ) my mom always loved the wings and I always loved the back seemed to have more favor. Enjoyed your video have a nice day EVERYONE 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I was really afraid to ask my mother how to do it cause she did it front of me ....😹i see this and its saved me from my mother anger so thanks very much
Thumbs up for such a good video, another one for not wearing rings or bracelets whilst handling food, and another one for being so cute
