- Freshman year at Northwestern flies by with loads of great memories and stories, so in this video, I want to give you a glimpse of what a week is like in my life at Northwestern. I have also included interviews with my friends, some of my own thoughts and great views and music. Hope you will like it!
** Follow me on instagram [ / mr_jam_jar ] for more pictures on Northwestern and Chicago.
** A special shoutout to all my friends (and professors loll) who made a cameo in this video -- you guys are the best!
Just got accepted for the class of 2024 and am binging every northwestern video out there. This was super great!
CONGRATS!!! I'm so happy for you! Hope to see you at NU next year!
Where did you end up going?
This is the first James video that I have seen, and it will definitely not be my last. I graduated from NU in 1980 and enjoyed this glimpse into the daily life of a contemporary Wildcat student. Go 'Cats!
Thank you Carl! Glad you liked the video it really means a lot to me!
This is such an awesome video! You really gave us a great sense of what it’s like to go to university at Northwestern!
Thank you Clare! Glad you like it!!
I got accepted at Northwestern, I can't wait for the grad school experience. You selected really well for your classes, in engineering, updating your technical skills is constant, but the critical thinking skills are never obsolete, management skills I have found are much easier to update and retain because they are so conceptual.
Congrats!!
Such an informative & high-quality video! I am a grade 12 student thinking about applying ED to Northwestern. You mentioned that NU has a large focus on finance / consulting, which is exactly what I want to pursue lol! It seems like a really beautiful campus as well!
Thank you!!
I came across this on my recommendation after entering my transfer application into Northwestern! And I came across you! Cheers man! Kheng Kit
thanks so much for the latest two videos you posted James贾😂,they offered me a closer glimpse of this school. Hope I'd become a wild cat like you next year!
Thank you Yuehan! I'm sure you will get in as long as you make the efforts! Also p.s. thanks for getting my last name right haha
@@JamesJia Update after my application: I got rejected from NU (ED) but got into UChi (ED2)...guess I can still visit the campus sometimes!
@@yuehanwang8022 Heeyyyyy, congrats!! UChi is a great school as well -- depending on what you study. Welcome to Evanston for a visit :))
NU has been my dream school for a long time! Thanks for sharing the details!
ANY TIME! Work hard, and you will make it!
Appreciate your vlog! Ps: I am also interested in the IE's major! Could you also create videos about the internships opportunities and the teaching method of Northwestern uni? If its more theoric or practical, and so on.
Hey Tatiane! Thank you! I just posted a video for my summer internship at McKinsey & Co. ua-cam.com/video/rajHfc0pELE/v-deo.html
I will definitely think about your rec when I make the next video!
@@JamesJia thank youu
James, I click on your Instagram link but it went out to error page..
Thank you for such a high-quality, informative, honest video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey! Thank you for this incredibly helpful and well-made video :) I'm going to be a Wildcat in a couple months, and I'm just getting more and more excited with each day that passes XD
AWESOME!! CONGRATS! Welcome to NU and hope to see you around campus hahazzz :)
Thanks for making this video, it gave a really concrete and vivid overview of the campus vibe and studying style there.
Btw you're really cute :)
Glad you liked it! And thanks for the compliment haha, you're cute too :)
LOL you never told me you were videoing! This is so good James!
HAHAH sorry!! Thank you!!
Oh my gosh James haha this is great I didn't realize you put that RA group in there 😭, Makes me very nostalgic indeed.
I KNOW!!! It was like years ago that happened lmao --- I wonder is the new RA doing their "leadership" workshop online? If not I will be very pissed hmmmmmm
Hi James, I love this video! I just got accepted to NU and I can’t wait for whatever’s next!! 秋天见!
Thank you so much Payson! Hope you are well and can't wait to welcome you guys next fall! :)
Great video! I’m excited to be a wildcat next fall as a neuroscience major! Hopefully I will see you around
YEAH!! Congratualtions!! Enjoy the summer, it's gonna be a long winter ahead in Evanston haha, hope to see you around the campus too!
James Jia Thanks! I am doing my best to enjoy it. So in your opinion how manageable is the workload for a STEM major with the quarter system? How many time do you spend studying vs other activities? And overall in your opinion what is the rigor and competitiveness like?
Wow, Hello my friend.. All the best to your channel and hope you have a wonderful day !!!
Thank you! You too!
this is such a good vid tysm
Thank you for watching as well!
Just got accepted into Bienen! Thanks for making my decision easier
CONGRATS SEAN!! Let me know if you have any questions!
What a great video. My daughter just got accepted into NU McCormick engineering (class of 2024) and she is ecstatic! She picked this school for the ability to easily switch between engineering disciplines and take a variety of courses, which is described perfectly in the video. The more I learn about this school, the more I realize it is the perfect fit for my daughter. 👍
Also, random question - my D did not have time in her HS schedule to take any pre-engineering or computer classes (though she took high level math/science - Calc 3/Linear Alg/AP Physics C).. she’s wondering if it would benefit her to take a summer CC computer or intro to engineering class before starting NU? Just wondering if most kids going into freshman DTC sequence have some pre-eng/computer programming experience, or if it doesn’t matter and everybody starts from square one? She is considering ChemE, MechE, Materials, IndustrialE, BioMed - basically anything except ComputerE..
Hi, I was also accepted in the NU class of 2024. From what I know, she should be completely fine with the qualifications but any additional studying over summer (especially if she has plenty of time) would definitely give her a leg up. From what I've heard from NU students, engineering is a pretty difficult major.
Hey! Thank you for your kind comment and I'm glad that you love the video. I'm sure your daughter will love NU as well!
To your question, I am sure she will be fine -- most of the freshman coming in does not have a CS background just like me, and Engineering Analysis course sequence will help her get things started. Just like any subject, CS is like a new language, so it will take some time to adapt, but most of the engineering students do that! That being said, if she is interested in CS though, or want to have an easier start next fall, picking up some basic programming skills during senior summer is not a bad idea. I'd recommend Python -- it is a great start!
@@living11for11love Agree! Compare to other majors, engineering is a little more time-consuming and demanding, but it is definitely manageable!
@@JamesJia Certainly! And I'm sure Northwestern does an awesome job at helping people achieve highly despite challenges
Chris Ellington Congrats on NU and thanks for the feedback!
I think I am going to ED to Northwestern and this video just solidified my decision!! I also want to apply to McCormick and the university looks so amazing
Go for it!
we never had such undergrad experience in our country. It was never cool. We seldom laughed. You guys are so lucky.Yup , I,m from South Asia
Yeah I guess people shouldn't take their college experiences for granted
What’s good !!! Class of 2025 here hopefully 🙏🏼
Wowww. Incredible video!!
Thank you!! Glad you like it :)
1:51 bruh the girl in the back looked pissed 💀
HAHAHAH I was asking a question -- maybe it was a very stupid question -- I remember I was asking about the magnitude of burgers vector, and it was not a thing LOL
I really enjoyed your video. It was very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for your support!! It really means a lot to me :)
Can you make a video explaining which classes you took each quarter??
Hey Marina! Ofc, I'll try to do that in the future. But in general, if you are an engineering student, the first-year curriculum is pretty much set, you have to fulfill the same requirement classes in order to take higher level classes - and this is regardless what major you have. Similar rule applies for college of arts and science too. Moving to the second year, most of the people already chose their major, and hence just start moving along with their major sequence.
Thanks for the video! Which dorm are you in as engineering major?
Hey Hanhee! Thanks for your comments -- most of my engineering friends live in the North, which is closer to the Tech, but I prefer living in the South. It's a bit of a walk, but you get to meet so many different people, and closer to the downtown. This year I lived in SMQ Residential College, and next year I'll be a Residential Assistant at Shepard Hall.
Keep going!
Im a senior in mccormick watching this video because I'm realizing I might not be studying on campus again before I graduate :(
Urghh big mood -- hopefully you guys will have a proper, crowd-filled graduation
Amazing video!!
Thank you! Glad you like it:))
you make time management look so easy any tips for a freshman engineer
Nice video! What camera are you using for your videos? What would you rec for new starters?
Hey! I used my iPhone 7s for my videos and photography. I felt like for beginner's level, equipment is less important than skills - so practice on steady cam techniques and angle / perspectives and so on is important! But I am thinking of taking my dad's DSLR next time hahahahah
hi! im from brazil and my dream is study at NU. this video was very helpful. thanks!
Thank you for your kind words! Hope to see you soon at NU :)
I'm also from Brazil, and I want to study at NU too
Hello! Do you know anyone majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders? If so, could you maybe interview them on their experience thus far at Northwestern?
Hey mariana, I'm sorry I didn't interview any cross-major friends. I do have some good friends in School of Comm, I even took a class there in my first quarter. Feel free to reach out to comm students in social media / youtube - I'm sure they will be happy to help!
You mentioned that the focus is on finance and consulting. Is there anything you can share about tech recruitment scene on campus - I mean silicon valley types. Thanks
Hey, thanks for the question! As an engineering student (I'm interested in data), I find the engineering recruitment a little disappointing from school's perspective. I'd assume that unlike schools in the west cost, not many big tech companies attend our career fair ---- I'm not too sure about other schools' situation. However, that said, we have many alumni working in silicon valley tech firms (some even in C level), and in my opinion, career fair is not the primary way to find a job in tech, but still connections and networking, and most importantly, real skills.
While Northwestern can definitely do better in silicon valley recruitment, I think Northwestern students do a good job in finding their career.
Hey james, i found the teachers very intriguing and was wanting to contact them can i pls know their names
Thank you! Feel free to search them up at Northwestern's website. All the profs and their work are there.
oh cool i live in ebanston
Nice place haha
Hey James! I just submitted my application for this year and I was wondering if you could talk to me a little bit about the social life on campus? Do people party a lot, is there school spirit, etc.
HEY Lilium, all the best for your application!! Could you send me an email at jamesjia2022@u.northwestern.edu? I'd love to chat from there!! might be easier to type long paragraphs. :)
How can a foreign student(South African writing IEB) get admitted at NU
Hey -- I'm not super sure about the process, but I believe internationally it's the same -- follow the CommonApp and complete the application process?
Do you not go to parties? What are they like at NU?
I mean... it's hard to imagine having parties in the foreseeable future lollll -- I do go to some, but I'm not in a fraternity, so I guess the chances of going to parties are much lower than members from frats. Mostly hanging out with friends -- but I heard parties are cool! Definitely a presence on campus (not as strong as some state school maybe?) before covid.
Prospective for 2025, thank you for your video!
THANK YOU!! All the best for your applications :)
James Jia omg thank you!
The video is fantastic! Can I ask about how you/NU students find your partners in the startups?
Hey Jingxuan, glad you like the video! So normally startups begin with friends / classmates / clubmates, who share the same interest or ideas. I wasn't the founder of my startup, but I saw their information online, and decided to join them. There are some matchmaking events too, if you are freshman, get prepared during the wildcat welcome, I'm pretty sure freshmen will have a tour / event at the Garage.

Hello, If you don't mind me asking, what was your gpa, act, sat, gpa, stats etc. I'm finishing HS soon and I would like to know what kind of grades I will be needing for admission. Thank you.
Hey ofc~ I attended my high school in Singapore, so I had Singapore-Cambridge A level as my official grades, instead of GPA, and I got As for all the subjects. In terms of SAT, I had 1550. Since I'm an international student, the requirement may well be very different -- but again, in general, I feel that Northwestern focuses quite a lot on grades. However, it is sometimes not the grades that matter the most, but "relative competitiveness". My friends around me not necessarily all have 1500+ SAT, but most of them are top in their high school graduating class. So definitely, working hard on your school results is important!
@@JamesJia Thank you, that was really helpful. I'm an A level student as well (Non singaporean) I'd imagine they share a lot of similarities, and did you have to take any AP's?. SAT's are definitely a lot easier compared to the A levels curriculum IMO as well, . So I think I'd have a good chance in getting admitted, again thanks for the info.
i like it👍🏻👍🏻💜💜💜
THANK YOU!! 💜💜🤍🤍
you have nice handwriting wow
Thank you hahaha!
if you're going to NU, two more weeks!!!!
YAY! As an RA of Southern Area, couldn't be more excited to see you'all!
James Jia nice! I’m gonna be in NMQ. Can’t wait
Why This university tuition fee is so high even it’s not an Ivy League
I'm not gonna speak for the university -- but I think this is a general issue for American private universities? Pick a private college from top 50 list -- their tuition is pretty much the same.
Not a big fan, but probably take a lot of institutional change to make a difference.
But with that said, if you are an american citizen, apply for financial aid!
@@JamesJia sorry for my bad english, Northwestern is around 60 k and up and Harvard is 50+ k thank you for answering my question, i watch you videos and i enjoy itl
Ivy League doesn’t have to do with the quality of the school. It’s sports related look it up. Northwestern is one of the best schools in the country :)
my dream school!!!(可以看懂中文吗
Thankssss Yun Yi!! Yes, I can read some Chinese, but couldn't speak well haha~
got accepted 2024!
Congrats Xi Ting! Hope to see you at NU this fall!! :)
