James Cameron was out of luck. After working for years as a model builder, production designer and second-unit director on low-budget horror films, he had been fired from his first job as director in a feature film. Stranded in Rome, swiping rolls off of room service carts, he had hit bottom. But he had an idea for another film; that idea became The Terminator. The script was easy to sell, but no studio wanted to take a chance on Cameron as director. His unbridled enthusiasm won over a few brave producers and star Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was a runaway international hit and Cameron was on his way.
Aliens and True Lies consolidated Cameron’s reputation as a director of action films, but he wanted more. Cameron’s Titanic went on to become the first motion picture to gross more than $1 billion worldwide and also earned an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards, including Oscars for Director, Cinematography, Film Editing and Best Picture. It became the top-grossing motion picture of all time, until it was surpassed by Cameron’s Avatar, a breathtaking science fiction spectacle photographed in a revolutionary 3D process invented by the director himself. With these historic achievements in motion picture production, Cameron has become, in the words of Titanic‘s Jack, “King of the World.”
James is a such a legend that when his agent told him that the Terminator 1 script was awful, he fired the agent almost immediately after that remark. Confidence is key.
Harlan Ellison.
"Confidence is key" but not everytime (Uwe Boll LoL)
Or arrogance; whatever works.
Nothing with confidence. Agent was being honest.
Adam Sandler should fire his agent...
If you are into film making or even if you have a dream of some sort , I'd say this interview is worth every minute of your time . He is not only a film making genius but also a very insightful and inspiring human
thanks for your love and support
@@jamescameron8675 Mr. Cameron, I've made this video for you: ua-cam.com/video/5my2d6rsNvQ/v-deo.html
100%
Damn Cameron is rapid firing pearls of wisdom here.
I never was a total fan of James Cameron movies... But damn, I did not think I'd learn so much from him in just one hour. I am completely sold.
You don’t need to be a fan to respect someone and listen to their lessons. I’m not the biggest Cameron fan either, doesn’t mean I don’t respect the hell out of him and that he doesn’t have a ton of valuable info.
So sad so many people tried to break him down and suppress him and keep him away from his great destiny. His story is inspirational...
Happens all the time, he’s one of the few who realized that they were morons
Happens to everyone, no one gives anyone a free pass. It's a competitive world.
James just doesn’t BS, he doesn’t have to and doesn’t tolerate it in others. Singular drive and vision. Inspirational.
When there’s so many film artists that like to present themselves as “the chosen ones” or those born with the magic, then there’s this guy who basically is saying: you can do it, there is a process. James Cameron all the way.
I watched the entire hour and six minutes of something I thought I was originally just going to skim through. I have a newfound respect for James Cameron.
The beginning part of commitment is so true. You have to have 100 percent or nothing at all. No wonder he is one of the biggest directors ever
I wanna be a musician and everything he says can be applied to it. What he says is a universal truth in every profession
This is one of the best seminars on filmmaking I have ever seen, everything he says is golden save yourself 2-3 years of film school and just got out and fucking do it!
This video should be re-titled "James Cameron Interview on Life." Like most I have loved JC's films but have a new appreciation for the man.
It is so fascinating to me to listen to humble people that are smart, great storytellers and at the top of their field. Their life lessons can be quite universal.
The loudmouths are usually the mediocre or failed ones
Cameron gave an articulate, thoughtful interview. His leadership comments were very interesting (eg. choose your team well, inspire them then accept their result even if it doesn't coincide with the vision in your mind.)
52:25 Cameron predicted the future exactly how it happened
Nice Words from James Cameron
if you set your goals ridiculously high and its a failure, you will fail above everyone elses success
James Cameron
Just sums up who he is.
Also the quality of the questions were simply mind blowing.
Exactly! The same interview could have been ruined if an amateur were asking questions.
here i am at the age of 36, driving across america to southern california, living in my car, not a penny to my name but i’m finally chasing my dreams.
Well enjoy homelessness
Hope you're doing well stranger! 💐👌😉
It’s crazy because a lot of things that he thought and felt or things that I think and feel as an aspiring director… It definitely makes me feel like I’m on the right track and I’m not alone. Especially when he talked about seeing George Lucas make films that he wanted to make and that it made him want to get off his butt… I’m going through that right now and finally getting the ball rolling on my first budgeted short!
Good luck. And lots of love you.
Awesome! You can do it! Can’t wait to see what you create
thanks for your love and support
@@jamescameron8675 whoa is that the real James Cameron?
Inspirational, even if you are not in the film industry, moral of the story, grab life by the balls, take risks, no one made millions by not taking risks , FACT
Epic
Engineer here and he's one of the guys I go to for inspiration. While I was getting my degree and outside of it. Spielberg as well.

Pretty cool James has a UA-cam account and reads the feedback. Says it all really.
Jim Cameron is one of those rare people who is just brilliant at everything
Thats why I love him so much...
His prediction of the future of filming is spot on. The mandelorian and avatar are great examples of this.
Really valuable stuff here and it’s just sitting on UA-cam waiting to be discovered...
*I really dig this magnificent quality in this video, this is great !!!... The sound and image are absolutely gorgeous, it feels like you're litterally talking to the guy standing in front of you, and he's talking about his experience and thoughts on film-making and highly intelligent perspectives on things and life in general in the end... I mean this is what is commonly called "A Perfect Interview Video Example". Hence my thanking you like crazy for it. Love to you guys, whomever you may be.*

“It’s not enough to succeed; your friends must also fail.”
I think not many filmmakers have the courage to acknowledge how common it is to be consumed by this feeling, especially when you’re starting up. Spielberg has, Cameron, apparently, has, Ridley Scott has, Damien Chazelle has... who else? I find this to be extremely important because otherwise it makes people who’re battling through that emotional state to also feel guilty in the process, which is the last thing one needs.
It was fascinating him explaining how people want to feel special so don't support others bc it's a conflict of interest
Anyone know similar interviews of other directors? I like the questions and answers.
7:29 - 7:49: Always have those little voices in your head. Can make all the difference.
Great interview, I’m looking forward to the next Avatar even more.
I love this guy..
Legend 👏
Hey,Dimash Kudaibergen just watched this interview 😂❤💜
How do you know?
I remember Working at a vegetable stall in Ontario when James Cameron used to come by and buy half a bakers dozen of pink lady apples for his Grandmother. Once I asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up and he said that he wanted to make films. I shot him down immediately and said: Listen to me Jamie, there are only two jobs in this world, apple sellin, and apple pickin. It's lovely to see how far he took his dream but I can't help feeling like this boy could have made a huge difference in the apple picking industry. Also his Grandmother showed me her thighs one time in Paulies Pizza Pub
Genius!
I am such a big fan of James Cameron, I want to meet you Sir !
At the end of a movie I would see about 400 peoples names(credits) i thought it was impossible to make ur own movie. 400 people, $millions, talent, I was wrong.
Thank❤ you🌹🥰🥰
8:30wow I needed that
thanks for your love and support
James Cameron plays down how Truly brilliant he is (Like Mensa) He so good on an amazing level things. Also who is a really bad director....My Vote is Michael Cimino heaven's gate....A movie and director that wasted so much money it wiped out a studio united artists
Remember the Subway commercial at the beginning of the T2 VHS. 😁
Thats when I bought Subway hard.
A lot of comedians get inspired by listening to a bad one and knowing they are funnier.
Where was this shot, where the are phones going off in the background?!
Isn't Daniel day Lewis in cabinet making at the moment?
52:47 Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson and many more
Wow, he already knows that we won't be using film as a way to record movies at about 52:45 :)
♥️
👏👏👏

Good point
This guy is out of his mind.
