      Ouch. We all have those things from time to time. Winter is 90 days of "hang-on" until we get back into less severe weather for applying foam.
      Supply and product pricing is a real issue right now. This will break some guys out of the business for sure.

    Not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but I'm building a house with a conditioned "crawl space" that will also be a service basement at a height of ~4'. I'm considering using stripfootings with FOAM around them and then run the sprayfoam into those foam forms. Ideally I'd like to not put in a slab as it sounds like spray foam over compacted gravel would suffice, but I also know that there will be trades on site installing plumbing elelctric HVAC. I'm wondering if you could lay down the spary foam and then wet set plywood T&G into that for a more level walkable surface?? Thoughts?

    Question - I have a massive pile of R12 batt left over after removal from the walls. - do you see any issue packing the batt into the rim joists and ceiling areas in contact with the foam for sound attenuation? SPF is my VB so cant think of an issue but would love your opinion.

    Shrinkage issues per ASTM D2126 still seem to be the most prevalent issue to me, “fakers” or not. Jobs that are at least three years old will commonly have some shrinkage above 2% in about 10% of their bays in my experience, and this has been demonstrated in lab testing as well. This is one good argument for flash-and-batt redundancy, especially with compression-fit mineral wool rather than fiberglass.

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  6 місяців тому

      You have no idea what you are talking about.
      Flash and batt....
      If your advice was followed and if there was a gap between the foam and wood the whole wall would be moisture ridden in less than 24 months.

    • @ReflectedMiles
      @ReflectedMiles 6 місяців тому

      @@SprayJones If that was true, just using batts would do the same. They are not vapor retarding, so it would be entirely the fault of the foam failure. (An advantage of having the batt in front of the failure is that it may keep the interior side of the sheathing cold enough to avoid condensation, in addition to maintaining a significant insulating value for that bay.)

    It is hard to be under cut. A lot of my builders don't even check the depth, which is infuriating because they think i'm over priced. One of my competitors recently undercut me 20 percent then went on to spray .5lb foam when he sold the builder 2lb. The owner was upset, but had no way to find the guy. Builders need to do better due diligence on quality of work and finding reputable companies.

    • @SprayJones

      It all depends on how well the rigid is fastened. If it is loose then it needs to be pinned down. Be cautious when something is running interference with the substrate. The foam will stick to it, but how well is it staying in place?

    Man I find it so hard to find good contractors. I have tried to vet companies that have good ratings and seem competent but I find that all they want to do is get in and out, upcharge and bad mouth each other. I just hired a company I thought was a solid teir 2 but started checking the boxes for a low end fly by night joke right off the bat when they arrived or didn't arrive. Blew me off the scheduled day and never called me. Found out he was out of town (on vacation) but wanted to make it up to me. Morning that they showed he started telling me there was more here than originally claimed by me. Was unprofessional (cussing) in his emails and texts to me. I was really getting livid but his guys were already in my attic. So I let them finish but won't use them for the rest of my projects but now i have to reinvest time to get another contractor. Very frustrated!

      @@SprayJones its funny too because they had lots of great reviews in the area. Not a single bad review. the owner didn't come to the house. I told him about my job and that i had about 700sf (rounded up from the 670/680sf that others had estimated) to insulate and he gave me a price with a written quote in an email. He said that he didn't need to see it, that he lives and sleeps this stuff and he could knock it out quickly. When his guys arrived for install they went right to work and began removing my old insulation and his lead guy came down to tell me that there was a measurement error that it was 100sf more than i told them. I thought that was crap but i couldn't go back up and measure as they had everything moving fast said what do i want to do. I reluctantly had them go ahead and finish it but that was when the owner was sending me txts that were really unprofessional and sounded like what i would expect from a teenager when someone called them out for lying. He also said that it would be 2" average thickness and i called them on several areas that are less than 1.5" and he said other areas are more than 2". I guess that's how he gets away with his 2" average thickness as opposed to 2" minimum that i could legally hold him to. I won't let anyone give me a "over the phone" quote again and This guy is going to get an honest review from me online. I guess i'll be the first bad review he gets.
