  • Fire Emblem is a JRPG tactics game that isn't as popular as other Nintendo series, but it is one of my favorites. In this video I look back on one of the 3DS Fire Emblem games in particular that I loved. One that never got the attention that it deserved. So join me on this series where I look back on some 3DS games that I enjoyed and I think you should give a chance if you haven't. Starting with Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Great video, I love this game, my favourite Fire Emblem game and one of my favourite games in general, if only the maps weren't so weird lol
Also I didn't know you could damage Jedah with Alm, never tried

ohhh you’re so right the final boss was rough. i used all my turnwheels on berkut’s fight and was pretty lucky i was Using Some Other Methods 😭 i also didn’t even bother with jedah and his every-4th-attack thing not gonna lie. i was playing on normal-casual too! i thought it was just me being bad at this game but it’s just kind of a pain apparently.
9/10 game though! i basically fell in love with echoes last month so this retrospective was fun to listen to :)
also i’m glad you’re a berkut truther! his inclusion definitely gives alm’s route some more spunk considering the plot is pretty standard for an rpg otherwise, plus ian sinclair KILLS IT!!!!
the voice acting is amazing like you said and this game would not be nearly as memorable if i couldn’t hear the agony in alm’s voice as he loses his dad and cousin by his hand just when he thinks he has some semblance of a normal family since mycen isn’t his “real” grandpa and he’s still frustrated with him (which gets cleared up in those supports later! but not in the moment where he’s freaking out). kyle mccarley’s alm (hands down made him my favorite echoes character), erica lindbeck’s celica, cherami leigh’s mae, chris hackney’s boey, greg chun’s lukas, max mittelman’s gray, robbie daymond’s tobin… plus so many more skilled VAs with wonderful performances!!!

Some VA facts, Tatiana's va was going to be the voice of Edelgard before she got recasted to Tara Platt (if I remember correctly), Clive's va also did Leon and Shuichi in Danganronpa, I mention this because of how different they sound, Catria's also did Felicia so feel free to imagine her saying "we've got trouble!!", Palla's is also Lucina's, which means both Laura Bailey and Alexis Tipton
This game in general shares some VAs with characters from Persona but I'm not saying just because

Honestly, this game is trash. It mooches off Fire Emblem 2, reworks every single character into an annoying anime stereotype, somehow has inferior writing to a NES game, somehow pales in comparison to said NES game in every aspect except the gameplay, and acts more like Gaiden never happened than "respecting" it by supposedly improving on it. It's the complete opposite of the DS games, both of which retained the tone and personality of the Kaga games as they modernized them. SoV however, takes a massive dump over an actually good game that everyone hates just for it being over 30 years old and having a rough reputation.
Everyone says, "Oh, FE15 has great music" - Gaiden's soundtrack makes up the best NES OST ever, so of course the remade music was going to capitalize off it.
Everyone says, "Oh, this game's story is ACTUALLY good compared to Awakening and Fates!" - Ever thought about why? It's because the story was originally written back in 1991, by a person who actually knew how to write a GOOD story. The writers for SoV never had to put any effort into brainstorming one themselves, because a NES game did all the work for them, and they ruin the characters as repayment, saying "we updated the game to 3DS standards." If you ask me, that's honestly even more disrespectful than Awakening having a nonsensical badly written narrative, which at the very least, hardly ruins anyone besides Anna. Inventing new bad characters is much less insulting and condescending than taking actually GOOD characters and RUINING them. If you liked Gaiden for its limited, albeit good writing and experimentation, you will likely hate SoV, but most people hate Gaiden, so everyone is going to herald SoV as "the Definitive Edition" that it isn't.
It's okay to like FE15 though. I despise it, but I can understand why everyone else loves it.

Last year I was in sort of an FE craze, and went on to replay Shadow Dragon and try New Mystery of the Emblem, which I ended up loving just as much as the previous, mostly because of the snappy and amazing touch screen controls (Seriously, it's criminally underrated how comfortable these games are to play that way), and after finishing them I was excited to play more:
I played Awakening and was really disappointed by the level design, it was nothing special, and I felt that way even though it was my 3rd game in the series. I still finished it and enjoyed the changes to the formula, but the truth is that I played Awakening mostly as a formality, as the one I wanted to play was this remake:
Some sort of continuation/prequel of the Altea story, combined with whats my personal favorite art direction for this series, and music that I found myself enjoying even before I played it made this game one I truly wanted to enjoy.
But in the end I found the maps even more boring than Awakening's, probably because there's either too much space or very little to move your characters around, so it's either a drag to constantly reorganize your units or stressing out about how magic works this time around. I definitely want to give it another chance, as I never got that far after Alm & Celica reunite for the first time, but I think it'll be best I wait for when I'm in the mood for some tactical rps as it could make it easier to ignore some of those annoyances I had.
Great video, btw. I've always enjoyed long video essays, but I know it's hard to keep someone entertained for longer than an hour, and yet I was throughout the entire video.

So youre mad they remade a game and it remained faithful to that game?
