@@Wingman77tws i wonder if there is an inclination that still barely gave you enough extra delta v to get into high orbit, but also barely passed by the polar biomes.
I should have rewatched this before starting my "Kerbin can't make liquid fuel" game. SRBs all the way until I can unlock a Convert-o-Tron and get it to Minmus, and initially they were supposed to be Fleas only. I ended up compromising and turning it into a "Kerbin can't make oxidizer" game with Hammer boosters too. I might redo it.
Almost everyone (including Matt) and I flew 'Jumping Flee' to collect science from mid-air only. I didn't know that you could actually reach orbit without unlocking any science tech tree!
Judging by the amount of science you got on the first flight this challenge will be done in less than four flights. The target bodies will likely be Minmus followed by a mission to Jools moons. Knowing Brad, he can probably make the Jool mission after this one, but I'm not sure if there is enough science to farm with the available experiments.
I wonder if they changed drag models or something in recent version given that if you have a flea SRB and a command pod like the one in this video and you come back to earth, your terminal velocity is actually through the roof, accelerating even past 700 m/s. I suspect pilot error on my end though.
It's not your fault, there was something sneaky going on. I was trying to replicate this and getting the same result, as the normal combination of MK16 parachute + mk1 pod + flea is actually very aerodynamic at supersonic velocities. But then I looked at the presented rocket again and I spotted that around the last stage, there was some slight mismatches in the stacking between the parts, indicating manual offsetting. Then it all made sense. So to replicate this result, what you do is that you mount the flea on top of the command pod, and the parachute on the bottom. Then you rotate them both upside down and offset them to the top/bottom to get a normal looking rocket. This tricks KSPs physics model into thinking that you have 2 massive steps in diameter in that upper stage instead of having a nicely streamlined body, which results in drag similarly to having a heatshield on there. It slightly reduces performance on the way up, but allows you to parachute it normally.
Why only four Mystery Goo units? Don’t you want six, for the launch pad, lower atmosphere, upper atmosphere, low above Kerbin, high above Kerbin and the biome you land in?
Bob Kerman is a scientist, so he can reset the Goo and take the data while on EVA. Launchpad science can be taken and reset without an Astronaut Complex upgrade, and Brad upgrades it as soon as orbit is attained, so he only needs four: 2x Flying Low, 2x Flying High.
I don't think I've seen anyone use "hot" staging like this since there was no limit on the size of the first vessel you launched in career. I remember thousand-part monstrosities people were using to go interplanetary... that was a while ago. I also don't think I've seen anyone ever use strategies in actual gameplay before.
How the fuck do you land that close to the KSC by pushing your craft out of orbit with EVA propellant. Only way I can get that close would be a fully powered descent with little to no aero-breaking.
What settings need to be altered, to allow a nose-leading reentry with no heating problems, hmm? Both the parachute and those goo cannisters should have burned off. Sorry, too much cheating to deserve any respect.
Actually, reading the other comments, the answer is a bit more complicated but still completely legitimate. See how the shroud around the last Flea isn’t burned off? That’s because the engine was attached upside down and rotated into position, so that the unoccupied node is facing forwards. That creates a lot more drag (because of how KSP’s drag physics is set up) and avoids a lot of heating.
*Jeb recieves phone call from KSC while in space* "Wait, what? We've upgraded our astronaut complex?" *Turns to other kerbals in ship* "Guys, we're allowed to get out now! :D"
You should look up Abyssal Lurker on UA-cam too. They did this in a beta version, and then they landed on and returned from Minmus without any rocket controls, then they quit the game when the official 1.0 release landed.
Usually, when i start my campaign first i m building a "rover" from 2 pods and travel around KSC to gather science to build a reasonable rocket and then reach LKO. Thanks for a brand new idea how to start the game.
My predictions: Launch 2: Mun flyby(s) with polar Minmus orbit. Launch 3: Faffing about near Eve and Gilly. Launch 4: Research station to the Jool system to finish the tech tree.
Matts videos are more like tutorials. His builds are often ridiculously overbuilt and idiot proof. I'm not trying to downplay Matt, as he admits it in the videos where he overbuilds.
I very disappointed your first vehicle wasn't an ssto. clearly it would have been possible to land on minimus using several munar gravity assists and the eva jetpack explains it perfectly enough. jk I cant even make a solid fueled rocket get into an orbit gj
I want you to try my Learn 2 Fly challenge. Start a new career mode and get to Eve and back in as few launches as possible. If anybody can beat my record, it’s definitely you.
SeucheAnemone 56 I’m not sure. I’ve gotten to Minmus on my second launch and collected a lot of science. But I didn’t have enough from my first launch to get the mobile processing lab. If you could somehow manage to unlock that on the first launch, then maxing out the tree is doable on the second launch. Otherwise, it’ll take a third launch. First launch unlocks enough to bring experiments to minmus on the second launch. Second launch unlocks processing lab. Third launch goes back to minmus but uses the processing lab instead of just returning to kerbin. Instead of maxing out the tree on the third launch, I went to Eve and back. Tried to do it on my second launch but just can’t unlock enough on the first launch.
