I don't think what Darnold has accomplished this season is just because of coaching. Coaching certainly plays a big part, but at some point the QB either has nor doesn't have the talent to make the plays. Darnold has it.
When kirk does amazing we say hes a pro and a veteran and seen it all. When in reality be doesnt even read defenses like majority of the qbs and O coordinators do in their system. It doesn’t matter that Cousins was playing great with KOC. His condition was an unknown and I don’t think anybody had evaluated him post-achilles surgery. The Falcons shouldn’t have been so quick to offer him that kind of money without kicking the tires and slapping the roof. The Falcons were all too ready to throw money at him and ask questions later. They were desperate for a solid veteran who was top 5-10 in many metrics before his injury. I think once they did evaluate things, they had no choice but to go behind his back and draft Penix after telling him that he was their guy for the foreseeable future. The KOC version of Cousins didn’t dupe the Falcons organization. The Falcons organization duped itself.
Agree on your last sentence...and btw Kirk wasn't "playing great with...". @klausdaus8010 I agree he isn’t known for winning in the postseason or making the best decisions, but what you say doesn’t matter either. The point I was making was, that he had the stats to back up that he was “good enough” for a team desperate for a “good enough” kind of guy. If he turned out to play like he did before his injury, he would be leaps and bounds better than the Ridders, Mariotas or Heinekes that the Falcons were going with year after year. They still should have evaluated him before making that offer regardless of whether he was as good as his stats said or not. You’re right, though, his best stat to date is fleecing teams for as much money as possible.
I don't even give the Falcons that credit. Kirk Cousins was in the league twelve years before becoming a Falcon. He's been a starter for nine of those years. In that time he's only managed three winning seasons, started a total of four playoff games (1 - 4 record) and hasn't seen a conference championship or Super Bowl except as a spectator. like the rest of us.
I dont think they got duped by this...... Cousins was on an absolute tear last year, and its clear hes not even the same player. Nothing to do with oconnel considering he now cannot move and literally cant get the same juice on the ball. Oconnel is GREAT but kirks regression has less to do with that, and more to do with the body.
How much does it have to do with throwing to Justin Jefferson vs Darnell M. Or Drake London? How much does it have to do with being 2 years younger and being healthier?
@@shawnjohnson9763 Ehhhh. their running backs are better, and they have 2 great WR's. Not as good as JJ, but as a duo, you cant ask for a ton better. Kirk just dont have it anymore. The throw velocity alone is evident. Kevin aint making him throw harder.
Cousins didn’t dupe anyone. He played at a high level before koc was in mn. The dude is coming off a major injury and is getting very old for an nfl player. Look no further than that. The falcons were foolish to give such a contract to a player in that circumstance.
You have the right idea but totally in reverse. Cousins has put up Hall of Fame numbers in Washington, under Zimmer and for a rookie head coach in O'Connell before he was a great coach. Coaching and more specifically offensive play calling and play design are the problems in Atlanta. I know you have always hated Cousins but I don't know why. If you have any question in your mind that Cousins has put up Hall of Fame numbers I would be glad to enlighten you. He actually had one of his worst two seasons as a starter under O'Connell when the Vikings went 13-4. The previous 2 years Cousins led 17 4th quarter comebacks but the defense blew 10 of those leads at the end of the 4th quarter or both those teams would have been approximately 13-4. All 3 of those years the defense was near the bottom of the league as was the offensive line. Cousins was very gracious as always in his first press conference after the change but did say one thing that made me very hopeful about his future, When asked about whether he thought he would be a starting quarterback in the NFL next season Kirk responded "I have not forgotten how to play quarterback". It is all about the offensive coordinator. If he calls some play action passes and throws occasionally on the early downs Penix will have a chance. But if he calls plays the way he has for Cousins, Penix is also doomed.
It happens. Quarterbacks get old in the same season they start. Aaron Rodgers is cooked. Brett Favre, Big Ben and Brad Johnson couldn't even throw a 10 yard pass anymore when they hung them up. True!
Mr. Florio, Kirk Cousins was never "coached up" - wtf are you talking? Have you watched his career? Kirk is what he is. Always was, always will be. Just a dumb take to put this on KOC or my Vikings. We really suffered enough for Rick's stupidity. Twice. I'll not let you hold my team accountable for another team's stupidity.
I don’t watch all the falcons games but it sounds like they don’t use Cousins like the Vikings did. Not enough Play-action passes. I am not sure if the O-line in Atlanta is as good as the Vikings. It does appear to me that Cousins isn’t as mobile since the Achilles injury. KOC is great at identifying the QBs strengths and designing a playbook around them.
Kirk Cousins was every bit as good under Zimmer, his first 4 seasons in Minnesota as he did his last 2 under O’Connell. That is a pretty bizarre claim. Cousins also put up numbers before Jefferson, when Dalvin Cook was 2nd on the team in targets behind only Diggs.
He won NFC offensive player of the week twice in the first half of the season. He didn’t forget how to play. I think he’s hurt. As a Falcons fan I hope we don’t cut him. Let him get another year ahead of the Achilles injury and see if there is some trade value. If Penix isn’t ready you open up the competition between them next year. Zero chance I would cut him just to do him a favor.
If I were the Falcons, I would just hang onto him until at least close to training camp. Just see where the ankle is. I can't imagine cutting him, eating all that cap hit, and then having to pay another QB to be the backup, then find out that once his ankle healed more, he turned out to be good for someone else. At the very least, if Penix is rolling and Cousins looks closer to normal, you'll get better trade compensation back. At worst, you have an expensive backup, but you're paying almost all that money anyway.
I’m surprised by Cousins, but he was one of the best QBs when using play action. The Vikings used it nearly 40% of the time with Kirk. The Falcons have used it on average 16% of the time. Having Cousins under center 84% of the time. I really think that’s hurt him, and knowing these things how much can the Falcons have a blame in this? Cousins strength has always been PA his entire career. I believe KOC had a definite calming influence and gave Kirk a game plan to be successful but he also played to his strengths.
I do agree KOC deserves massive credit, and if Darnold walks I don't think he'll be the same anywhere else. But I also think Kirko is not the same after the injury. He's throwing ducks to the feet of open receivers. I don't remember him ever doing that. He doesn't have the same zip on his arm. That said, Atlanta is not screwed. They were smart to draft Penix. Good for Atlanta. If Penix is a bust, yeah then they're screwed lol
I thought Cousins did fine if you gave him the time! If pinched for time his mobility and ball security hurts the team. Vikings had some offensive lines that weren't that great at protection too. The one year Sam Bradford played he took a beating like no other, but that young man had an arm and could throw bullets. Shame his knees were so bad.
It was finally good not to hear about prime time failures with out cousins , darnold just won , and easily , Kirk is a basket case mentally, wish him the best

It's their own fault. Just like the Jets. Paying all that money for a qb that can't move, in a league that covets a mobile qb. Think of all the first downs others are getting on their own.
I mean, Kirk is in his mid-30s and had a major injury to his Achilles last season. He's just cooked, that has nothing to do with sam
