  • Early Morning southbound trip down the METRA Electric's Blue Island branch. Run is effectivly express due to all the flag stops and light patronage. This is basically an equipment move that also carries passengers.
    Includes a meet at the Pullman siding. Shot from the railfan window of the new Gallery car equipment using a hand held GoPro.

    Great video! I grew up on this line a few houses down the street from the Racine stop and loved seeing the trains fly through all day. The new Metra cars just don't have that same quality or sounds like the old Highliners. What's also cool about this line is that back in the day the Chicago West Pullman and Southern did freight operations for the paint and steel plants located to the right of the Racine station with a small freight yard there as well. I don't know what other industries they served along the line.

    Did anyone else notice at the 12:27 mark that switch wasn't aligned for the direction the train was going??

    The Blue Island branch is a commuter stretch that I find quite unique in the way it connects two lines and different suburbs at once. I can't believe South Chicago residents complain about the El only going down to 95th when they can just take this or the ME mainline for only 1 or 2 dollars more.
    They're actually luckier than everyone else in Chicagoland considering the 10 to 15 dollars it costs to go to Waukegan, Kenosha, Harvard, Elgin, and especially South Bend.

      +YTPman Jim SEPTA has a lot of overlap like this, especially between commuter rail and suburban trolley / interurban lines.

      Do you plan to film down to University Park anytime soon?

    • @PositionLight
      @PositionLight  8 років тому +2

      +YTPman Jim That's lower priority. It's local service which isn't very exciting and I only get to Chicago once or twice a year.

      They complain because it does not run with enough frequency on the branches to be a useful alternative or connection to the CTA. There is little to no coordination between those two agencies. Less so with Pace. Not to mention, two different fare payment systems and having to transfer downtown back to the CTA downtown is not exactly easy or convenient as NJT or LIRR going into Penn Station NY where the subway is directly connected.

    GoPros are perfect for filming on public transport, because the conductors can't see them so you don't get harassed!!!!

    You must've taken the 7:35am train going southbound. After it pulls from Kensington (115th Street), the flag stops that it bypasses are State St, Stewart Ridge, West Pullman, Racine Ave, Ashland Ave, Burr Oak, and the end of the line - Blue Island (going southbound and northbound, it only stops on the last 6 stations at certain hours in the morning and evening when a passenger is visible on the platforms).

      @@tyhik9338 I kind of miss the older passenger cars. In my option, I think the seats in the older passenger cars were more comfortable then the new passenger cars. Except with the older passenger cars you can't move or reverse the seats on them. On the new passenger cars, there are bathrooms and electric outlets along the passenger cars. Both new and old passenger cars have there ups and downs about them.

      The older Highliners are long retired. The final old Highliners ran in early 2016. The Electric District is now fully equipped with the newer Nippon Sharyo Highliners (nicknamed "Silverliners" because of their silver exteriors).
