OOPS! My bad: While Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, it is NOT part of the EU. Sorry to all my Swiss friends, (including Roger Federer and Martina Hingis!)
I think this video is highly valuable, unofficial or not. And we get your opinions on buffets and shows, why wouldn't we get it about changes affecting people while they travel?
I hadn't heard anything about this before so I'm glad you talked about it. My health has kept me from my years-long-planned trips to Europe and the UK but I still have hope they'll be resolved and I can finally go. I wasn't planning to use a travel agent but now I think I will. I'll want someone who knows all the things I need to take care of before going. Considering my country is doing its best to tick off our allies, I know it may become harder.
Thank you for the info, Morgan!
As mum to 2 queer children, we live in a heightened state of alertness for what (those of us with brains and souls) history shows will happen. Thanks for including this in your video. Enjoy your fun and practical advise videos!
It's so much fun watching Americans freak out right now about the ETIAS (EU) and ETA (UK); not realizing europeans have had to pay the US for an ESTA for 15 years
Freak out over paying an additional $7.00 USD? I think not but perhaps I’m in the minority. I love the UK and the EU and $7.00 isn’t going to make me reconsider my travel plans.~ Cheers!
You e explained the new rules for ETIAS and ETA better than any source I’ve listened to or read. Thank you Morgan!
Right, like americans freak out about paying for things they want. Like $75K pickup trucks. Your drama is hella boring.
If your so smug, why are we ahead of you?😊
Who’s freaking out? Not Americans. The only thing we Americans are freaking out about is the new administration.
Thank you, Morgan, for addressing ALL of this information. It's all so confusing, and it really helped to hear a breakdown. Have a great week!
I never thought that I’d say this, but I’m so afraid for what the future is going to be for our family members. My husband and I have been together since 1994 and I feel that we’ve been so fortunate to have fairly equal rights. Except for aids, we have had things really great.
Thank you so much for this incredible channel of yours and of course thanks to your amazing German husband as well!
About time, been charged for getting an ESTA and the ETA for years when travelling to the US and Canada.
Thank you Morgan for this video. Not only informative about coming visa regulations (whenever), but your very polite, objective take on the current BS going on on the other side of the pond. We (I'm European) have been looking at each step with horror! There is no way in hell we travel to US in the foreseeable future. What a pity, but hey we gotta live in reality.
Understandable you wouldn't want to be here...but as you look on remember those of us that KNOW how wrong this all is. (I hope there are more of mes than thems )
Your video was perfect. So many unknowns right now! One day at a time seems to work!
Appreciate you addressing these issues.
Traveling to UK and Europe next month. It took less than 15 minutes to get the UK ETA. Ally here.
I am glad you highlighted the trans issue at the end of this discussion. My daughters UK passport says F for gender, but I have always advised her to take a copy of her birth certificate and the gender transfer papers when she travels as she looks gender neutral due to hormone treatment she takes.
I hope she doesn't encounter any complications.
We have a Mediterranean cruise in 95 days and there has been no word about the ETIAS. fingers crossed that they don't spring it on us a week before our vacation.
Thanks for the gentle gender talk. We're Canadian and this affects a close family member (Canadian). We won't be going to the US for at least 4 years. Why are some people so obsessed with the body parts of others? Is this going to head towards other things like breastfeeding laws? It's scary.
I am hoping to make it to Spain this year or next so will be keeping an eye on these things. I don't mind the forms or fees it is just trying to make sure I have everything filled out that I need to fill out.
Same
My trip was already planned and booked well in advance before this came about. My family travels in May. Hopefully, this will implement AFTER our trip to avoid any delays
Thank you for addressing this very unsettling issue. I know that you don't usually talk politics, but you are right. This was a stupid move by the news administration. It saddens me to see such blatant bigotry in this country. 😢
Thank you, Morgan. I'm traveling in May to Spain and Italy. I was looking and monitoring when this EES and ETIAS is going to open. I hope not before my trip dates to make things easier.
Preach it my friend! Thank you for supporting my trans and non-binary family and friends. You are the BEST!
I will be taking a cruise to the Mediterranean this April and have been looking into the ETIAS, but as you said, it's vague on when it starts, plus it mentioned a 180 day grace period, which to me is confusing at best. I signed up for email alerts when it goes into effect or when there is a update, which I hope will keep me informed before my cruise.
It’s so embarrassing to be a US citizen these days I can assure you.
Not sure if this applies if flying into the UK and change directly to another flight, but when flying into any Schengen country, you do the immigration and security controls at the first airport and then are considered a domestic passenger as far as immigration and security is concerned, but still will have to pass through customs, as not all Schengen countries are part of the EU.
So if flying to the UK from the US for example, I‘d think you would have to go through security again, but not border or customs control, as you aren‘t entering the UK technically.
Agree!
Then move
@michelleevans9869If you don’t like my freedom of speech you can move.
Thank you for standing up for the transgender community. Always find your videos informative, but glad to hear your view. 🌞👏
Hi Morgan, you probably should rather say Schengen than EU in connection with the new registration rules. While Switzerland isn‘t part of the EU, we‘re luckily part of the Schengen area. So if someone flies into Switzerland, they haven’t entered the EU yet, but since there (normally) aren‘t any passport checks when traveling between Switzerland and Germany / Austria / France / Italy you already need the travel authorization when entering Schengen via EU.
BTW, that‘s also why anyone flying into any Schengen country from outside the Schengen area and changing to any other flight , you have to go through a security check again, as you are only considered „Non-Schengen secure“ :-)
Yes! Now I remember! I feel slightly stupid now.
So the EES is having some issues. It has been delayed for years at this point. The important thing though is that ETIAS will not come into play until at least 6 months after EES is introduced. But yeah, in general, EES should be beneficial to travellers and reduce queues significantly.
Also, sidenote, when you mentioned people exempt from payment, it is referring to people who are certain specific family members of EU/EEA/CH citizens with the right to movement via their family member. So for instance, if you are a non-EU/EEA/CH child of a German citizen or the non-EU/EEA/CH spouse of a Greek citizen or a non-EU/EEA/CH dependant parent of a Norwegian citizen.
Excellent information and further proof of how well balanced this channel is in providing entertaining, educational and significant material.
In addition, your successful attempts to keep even serious subject matter as objectively and diplomatically presented as possible, is extremely admirable and much appreciated.
Morgan, thanks for your comments. As an American I appreciate your view and wasn’t aware of the passport change, but then again I wasn’t aware that DEI was the root of all evil, either. That and undocumented immigrants. My only question is when all of those “problems” are “resolved” and Trump’s base are still mired in their miserable lives, who and what will they come for next? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Thanks for your thoughts
great info and at least I know ill have a 6 month warning
And ETA which I needed for my last cruise last month because we stopped at a UK port.
As an American, I'm ashamed to be one. I've always been, live and let live. I'm mortified by this administration. Apparently racism and bigotry and hate has been behind back doors. No longer and I fear for any of those who are going to pay the price. So, please don't think we are all the same. We are not, and will die fighting for everyone's rights and liberties. Take care and be nice to one another.
This was very informative
Hey Captain Morgan, thank you very much for explaining the new rules for entering the EU from North America. At the moment I am on the planning stages for two potential trips which may be impacted by these new rules. Again, thank you ... 👏👏👏
Morgan, as an assist on the correct definitions - Gender is a social construct related to the presentation norms generally attributed to the sex of an individual (e.g. men wear trousers, women wear dresses). Sex is the biological aspect of the person related to genetic makeup and reproductive organ development. While variations are rare, sex is not actually binary (only male and female). I hope that helps, since it is common to conflate the terms.
Hopefully the Supreme Court will step in on the passport gender issue.
I’m embarrassed to be American. On my last cruise on the Norwegian Prima, I just started telling people I was Canadian.
If you’re not happy then move
Thank you for this valuable information. I have to admit, I am NOT looking forward to this ETIAS for Europe and the new UK ETA change for Americans to visit/pass through the UK. Yes, I know Europeans have been doing this for years to visit the U.S., but it does worry me. I will give these new changes time to "work" then I will decide if I want to travel.
The day before I was traveling with my second passport, my daughter discovered sex was wrong. There is no time or chance to correct it before the trip. It was the 2000s, so I made it through the trip with no problem.
I’m going to go the UK and Europe in October. I’ve been watching the website, and I’m not sure if it will running by time I leave. I haven’t heard from the travel agent or airline yet. I have a both a British passport and Australian passport and wonder if this will still apply. It’s a wait and see.
Even taking the political and human rights issues out of it this just seems like a large mess. I mean if you show up at a country and you have male listed on your passport there are many who transitioned so well that it is nearly impossible to tell. I can see many countries looking at the person and thinking that their passport is fake. The other risk would be that there are other countries (like say Russia) where giving them the heads up that a person is trans puts a target on their back. I do feel for my trans friends out there. As far as in the USA I don't think that anyone who is trans coming into the states with an "incorrect" passport will be flagged as with the cuts going on I will be willing to bet airport security will be so understaffed that they will only give a basic glance before moving on to the next person.
The cabin looked comfortable for a couple of nights and one person. Four people, maybe not so much. ❤
I don’t understand why this change has been made either. The obsession with trans people baffles me and I would have preferred things to be left as they were. 😢 Thank you .
This should not be implemented. As a European, I don't supper this system.
I'm kind of on the side of, if you match your photo exactly, and the new law is just that, new, you'll be fine.
How are we supposed to know how much time we spent in Europe. I miss the stamps, they give me great joy looking at them damn.
You'll be able to see it in the app!
I looked on the web site, the cost is under $10.
I found the whole video very interesting. Must admit not real happy with giving fingerprints and such to a foreign government, just to visit. The latter issue doesn't affect me directly, but will a long time friend, who may not be able to travel because of this.
Doesn’t this also include flying through a country? Like if I’m flying from the US to Italy, but my plane stops in England, just long enough to get on my next flight, I would still need to get it for England, even though I’m not staying there?
BTW, only the 23% of registered American voters who voted for the current president seem to be preoccupied with trans people, who make up less than half a percent of our population. 🙄 The rest of us either don’t care or are allys.
We canceled our Med cruise this year until we can figure out just how much he’s going to make the rest of the world hate us. We went on our last Med cruise the week Obama was elected and were welcomed with open arms everywhere. I don’t think this time will be the same!
Oh, good question. Sorry, but I don't know the answer!
From what I've heard from follow travels, Europeans are giving tourists a chance to "explain ourselves."
I agree Morgan. Living in the US now is crazy and confusing. Who is the Administration trying to appease with these changes? Is the true power this moral right wing majority making these changes out of fear? Why? Ok, im done with my rant. Good video!
The EES will be operational some time in 2025, marked by a big informational campaign (FRONTEX produced inflight videos etc) It's not currently operational.
(FRONTEX being the new EU border authority, due to replace every countries individual border agency some time in the future).
Despite the extensive attention given here, neither EES nor ETIAS is going to ruin your cruise. What might, for a select few travelers adversely impact one’s cruise is the “diary” you mention. As has always been the case, non-EU residents/citizens visiting a country in the Schengen Zone are limited to a total of 90 days within the last 180-day time period. The “diary” you mention simply makes it instantly viewable to immigration authorities on arrival if you have exceeded (or are about to exceed) that 90-day limit. Currently that’s a manual process. The only thing that is changing is the ability for travelers to slip through the cracks in the 90-day limit (as an expat in France it’s not uncommon for Americans who have exceeded their 90-day limit to be allowed entry due to the challenge of scanning the entry/exit stamps on a passport). It’s important to know that leaving the Schengen Zone does not “reset” your clock.

Norway info says 2. Match due to start
I love your videos and I’ve been following you for a while but I would suggest staying away from any political issues. Your channel is amazing but this video felt out of place. Don’t be angry, there is just so much politics in the world right now and the last place I want to hear about politics is on my favorite You tube creators.
Yet, here in America during the ongoing nightmare of free borders, we had people in our country just wandering in and running amuck, with no kind of ID required. Maybe these people who are all for allowing just anyone in our country will take some wisdom from this video.
