I know. My thoughts exactly; and when he's presented with someone that gives him a perspective from the senior person - someone who actually cares about the old people - his immediate response is to defer to this third-party who has a vested interest in keeping the people locked up. And to add insult to injury, he doesn't even speak to the person on whose life he's making a decision on. Infuriating, mainly because I know there are judges like this in reality.

There is a trend recently in cinema, be it shows or movies, to depict really despicable people and to somehow presume the viewer will sympathise and eventually root for them. I don't mind a good anti-hero movie when done right, but when a movie essentially is packed with despicable people on all sides, the viewer can't help but feel a sense of total apathy for all involved.
This apathy becomes apparent in a lot of confusing and unusual scenes, as if the writers just presumed outright that the viewer would happily go along for the ride and cheer on Rosamund Pike's despicable character. From the very beginning, we are somehow supposed to feel a sense of wonder as she stands her ground to the poor man whose mother he is prevented from seeing.
"I'm not afraid of you, you think I'm afraid just cause you have a dick?" she says, no doubt the writer's attempt to woo us with some sassy "girl power". We are somehow supposed to love-hate her now because we see she can somehow hold her own, whereas the man, the true victim, is depicted as some kind of inarticulate, oafish eunuch.
The writers then go into manipulation overdrive, dragging us along for this episode of Gone Girl: Retirement Edition in an attempt to continue to force us to feel some kind of empathy, perhaps pity, for these two dreadful women, especially when their world starts to close in on them. We are somehow supposed to feel concerned when her girlfriend is worried and later exposed to violence and possible death (which, predictably and unfortunately, never comes).
Of course, her death can only come in the very last scene (in a white dress, very subtle, really) because these movies love to subvert our expectations in much the same way those dreadful writers effectively ruined the last two seasons of Game of Thrones for all of posterity. Therefore, while no major character ever truly dies, and it is entirely predictable that she escapes from the car in the reservoir (a film device used so many times that it's now cliche), the ending is somehow supposed to surprise us. From the uncharacteristic deal she makes with her nemesis to her ultimate demise, a scene so lacking in catharsis that it barely packs a punch.
At last, we're left with an ending which farewells all subtlety, instead choosing to harass the viewer with endless platitudes about the dire state of capitalism, something we've had beaten into us from the beginning, only for it to continue in a more rapidly verbose and eyerolling way by the end.
If you hadn't heard for the 50th time, you're either a lion or a lamb. You either win or lose. Are you a lamb? Or will you choose to be the lion? Oh, me? I'm a lioness. A fucking lioness, no doubt. Because in this world, you can either be a predator or a prey. You therefore ought not to hate the player, but rather the game.
    Cool story, bro.
Overall, I am rather unhappy that I wasted time on this very milquetoast Ohio version of Tom and Jerry.

If it had not tried to become "Mission: Impossible" and stayed confined to the small-time grift of elderly care abuse, this would have been one of the best films of the year. However, like the characters in the film, the writer / director gets greedy, and pays for it.

Totally agree - the mob don't fuck around like that - they would have killed the family members of the people involved - chucked her and doctor and the care home manager into the back of the van - tortured them as a message - gone to court after all above issues were out of the way - and probably have threatened the judge indirectly pre hearing using links to the masonic lodges to let him know he is next and that would have been that - everything back to normal again!
They would have taken over her enterprise and either put their own person in charge and or replaced her with someone less offensive to them!
BEST CASE SCENARIO - They would have turned up to her home and said from this point on your paying us a % - and broken her best friends face Infront of her - to make matters even more funny they would prob have a couple of corrupt cops there to do the racketeering - so that she knows she has no one she could turn too - even then the mom would have been out for seconds

    Honest review with spoilers:
If your not gonna read the whole thing, read the last sentence.
If it was not for Rosamund Pike this would have been a disaster. She and Dinklage have a good dynamic centered around the grandma.
Here are some things that annoyed me about this film.
    1. It's a Russian mafia film disguised with a frankly interesting premise.
    2. The judge is being made out as an idiot with no brain. I get he's supposed to be mislead by Rosamund Pike, but no way hes that stupid.
    3. The Russian taxi driver that is supposed to pick up the grandma is a hyperactive idiot. If we are talking about organized mafia here, no way he would be put in charge of retrieving the mother of the boss. But the plot needs him to be dumb, so he can start a ruckus at the old people home.
    4. Why does he need to start a ruckus for the plot?
So that Rosamund Pike and her girlfriend can wait outside the building door and aim bush this idiot like in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. The scene at 59min18sec in the film could be straight out of a low budget TV show. Laughably bad.
    5. A good thing was the dialogue between Pike and the grandma, that is what I wanted to see more of, that was genius.
    6. Then she gets kidnapped by the Russian mafia, pisses off the boss who orders her dead and... she lives???
This is the most incompetent Russian mafia, straight out of a slapstick comedy. Normally when ordered dead by a mafia boss, you die. (BTW the same thing happens to the girlfriend later, but of course she gets saved by the skin of her teeth. Guess who the mafia did manage to kill... the fkng "female doctor" who is less than plot irrelevant except for her being dead. A missed opportunity to kill the girlfriend and have that be a motive for Rosamund, since Rosamund dies in the end too, so they don't get to have a happy ending anyway, might as well make the deaths mean something to the plot AND the characters. )
    7. Which is why to me the rest of the movie didn't make sense, since I simply didn't beleeve that she woke up from whatever state she was induced into by the mafia men, had no shock or panic or any sort of lapse of clear thinking as she was streaming down her death in the car and on top of that manages to "one inch kick" the windshield and escape the car...
    8. Also, that scene uses a lot of cuts to show her progress of escaping. The first time I saw it I found it rather tension inducing, the second time I realized that it was made probably to hide a tumbling performance, which was not the actresses fault but the directors/screenwriters who put her in that position.
    9. Then there was the infiltration segment, don't even want to waste more time thinking about that.
    10. Than we have what I consider the last act, where the make a pact and build an empire. This could have been achieved through a much smarter way than to have her being a spy female James Bond infiltrator. J Blakeson obviously has written this movie to be on the rather feminist side of things, and this is all right with me, no points deducted for that, but couldnt he think of a way to make her achieve a stalemate with the mafia boss by using her witts. I mean she has the biggest ace up her sleeve- his mother. And this is the biggest disappointment of thi movie. It would have been so much better to see her using her witts and cheesing the mafia boss into doing what she wants by usind the grandma. Instead he had to go the obvious feminist route and make her "just like a man. If a man can infiltrate the Russian mafia, so can she". I find that to work against the movie. It destroyed the premise of the film, it degraded the film to low crime show, it degraded the feminist agenda by not letting her be smarter than the mafia (which was already unrealistically dumb). Good think the performances were solid, so that's good.
In conclusion, with the super interesting premise that this film had, I ask myself why J Blakeson had to degrade it to such a low level Russian mafia flick and undermine a strong womans capabilities by making her a hard hitting infiltrator(we all know there is no reality where she gets through two Russian mafia bodyguards, but for feminism sake, she's gotta do it. )
The act structure for me this time was act one (the lawyer stuff), act two (the fight with the mafia) and act three (the team up) - I know it's weird, but that's my way of analyzing this film.
The first act was phenomenal, the second atrocious and the third was OK in all honesty.
    I don't give a shit about "I care a lot"

For the love of god why couldn’t they at least put ten seconds into showing Marla’s physical endurance/capabilities to at least make it slightly believable that she’d survive the car scene and become a ~badass out of nowhere. The revenge storyline was totally unearned. Why not put a twist into Jennifer’s character? There was so much potential to not go the route that they did. Each layer did not “make sense” and I completely disagree that the outrageous conveniences weren’t enough to make people lose interest because I simply had to stop watching when I saw she decided to start chasing the mafia guys. Rosamund Pike plays a very similar character in Gone Girl , which on the whole is a better film. Not to take anything away from I Care A Lot which is very solid. The last 30 minutes pushes crediblity and feels a bit forced. You can feel a Producer's/ Studios notes being implemented when she turns the tables on her adversary and how the whole situation is resolved. Not to give anything away but it really should have ended with her in a guardenship herself with a woman similar to her repeating the same speech she gave the mobsters mother in the beginning. Overall a solid movie and a good nights worth of entertainment.

I'm having a difficult time expressing my emotions about this movie. It's been a long time since I've wanted a main character to be tortured over and over again. The performance was amazing. I LOATHE this character. However I also felt she was robotic. I never felt she cared about anyone. Not even a particular character that she was meant to. It felt unrealistic or one dimensional. Sorry I can't articulate correctly what about her I didn't see established. I hated this movie because her performance was so good. She's evil. Then in the last 5 minutes or so I saw a potential twist and I was mad all over again because then I liked where it was going. The ending paid off for me but it also felt unrealistic. It ended the way I would want it to end. Ultimately I think it speaks to how well made the film is that I want to analyze it. I can't say I love it. I can't say I hate it. It pulled me in and I just have to say it was entertaining and well made. I'm grateful I watched it. I don't know if I have the strength or courage to sit through it again. I definitely would recommend it. Powerful and crazy stuff.

Acting and suspensewise was awesome but ya some of the the scenes ur like this is a bit unrealistic for a film that's grounded in reality but overall it was a decent film.

Very dark, but very well done. I like Rosamund Pike, especially in 'Hostiles' and 'Gone Girl', and it's great to see Dianne Wiest and an actor I really like, but don't see much of - Chris Messina, as well. It was better to motivate brave women to confront a mafia led by a person with special needs, the director and writer provided a disgusting example of ambition, the story focused on a woman who defrauded the elderly but suddenly wow she could topple a gang For organized crime, give her some caffeine, not Mel Gibson, I pity the feminist to present itself in this way. The male roles in the movie are marginal, starting with the clumsy judge, the gang, the attorney, and Boss. Thanks for laughing at the minds of motivated women, they will start their morning with the hope of becoming lionesses by fraud.

Wanna watch a 2-hour movie about someone you hate? This movie was terrible. There was NOTHING about the main character that was cool. It is possible to have a story about an Evil Villain, and write it such that the audience is rooting for the villain. It can be done. But there was NOTHING to like about this person. She's not the sort of Evil Villain you enjoy watching. She's the sort of Evil that you want to see beaten to a pulp and thrown into a Turkish prison and beaten some more. This is made even more annoying because she's so strong and competent and awesome at everything. Imagine if Rey was a scheming, lying, larcenous sociopath. She SUCKS. You keep waiting for her to get her comeuppance but she never does. The end result is a frustrating, annoying, and deeply unsatisfying story.

And the script writers missed the huge opportunity to have Diane Weise character or the son use the smoking thing Rosamund’s character smoked through to cause Rosamund’s character end up becoming incapacitated (fake stroke?) and end up living the same fate as her victims (except, satisfying for audience knowing she has many years ahead of her being drugged and set up as payback)
