Wow! What a gorgeous area! No wonder you chose to live there! This video was really lovely and I felt like I was there on the beach with the cobwebs being blown away! Fanastic shots of the cows and rabbit too! Its fantastic that there was such a strong community in the village. Thanks for showing us around Paul!

I really loved living here - although it was 20 miles from where I worked, because I did night shifts, and didn't leave home until 9pm, it only took 35 minutes to get there.
It worked the other way in the mornings too, as everyone was coming into Plymouth then, rather than leaving it.
      Take care,
      Paul

That must be one of your best videos, Paul! I dont know whether its the quality of the light there, or the time of year! Or just a wonderful coastal location. But that was great! Thanks for that!

There was a bit of artistic licence with this video as much of it was filmed over two days. I often that the best lightning for photography and videography is on the worst days for weather - and the reverse is true too! Peak summer is the worst of all - a thin, flat light. The light just peeped through after the rain leaving the lighting conditions as you saw them in the video.
      Take care,
      Paul

I have lived in many parts of the Westcountry: Redruth, Perranporth, Illogan, Yealmpton, Plymouth, Dartmouth, and now near Stroud in Gloucestershire, but this, I have to say, is my absolute favourite, and it isn't because of the coast and beach particularly, it is the community and the sights and sounds of nature in both South Huish Ley and South Milton Ley.
It isn't for everyone - especially for anyone liking shops, nightlife, pubs, entertainment, and public transport is poor. Apart from the last one, none of the others bothered me at all. For me the plusses by far outweighed the negatives - and, usually (!) the climate really is rather special about this part of Devon - far drier and milder than Torbay and Plymouth.
      Cheers,
      Paul

    Hello Paul. Greetings from Poland
I've waited to see this video with bated breath. The opening sequence is awesome inspiring, especially with the music in the background.
South Milton looks wonderful. What a lovely place to live. The beach and coastline are spectacular. It leaves Thurlestone beach standing. The breathtaking view's are gorgeous even with this terrible weather. 40/50 mph! Thurlestone Rock is lovely.
You story of living in the village was very nice. What a shame you had to leave. Lovely church interior. Hope you didn't get too wet.

It rained every day I was in Devon - but not all day each day. I had to do a bit of artistic licence to film this one as the whole thing was filmed over two days - it was too wet to continue on my first day of arrival and I had to wait in my car for two hours on the following day - then the sun broke through briefly to get the shots that you see at the start.
Been a tricky filming month with so much rain! Maybe I jinxed things by saying about hte drier climate here (it usually is) - hopefully it will become drier as we go into winter. I have no issue with filming in the cold.
      Take care,
      Paul

It was a really a super place, and I do feel lucky that I did live here once, even if it was only for a couple of years. By far, the best place I have ever lived.
Yes, one of the benefits of doing night shifts (there are many in my opinion, not least of which it meant a 40 hour week was only 4 days long - I had three full days and nights off) is that I was travelling to work at 9pm, so roads were clear then - only took about 35 mins to get to work. Leaving Plymouth at 8am or 9am meant you were flowing away from the traffic coming into the City; although it did take a little longer, I was usually home well before 9am or 10am.
      Cheers!
      Paul

I guess this place and area may be a bit 'Marmite' (British expression meaning you either love it or hate it - named after the famous yeast spread, and its advertising slogan) to most people.
It has no facilities, poor roads, no shops, no pub, no takeaways, no school (in South Milton, but Thurlestone has) - and that's why I love it! I am not so keen on the poor public transport, but I guess if it had a great bus service, it would become more developed, so it is a fine balance.
Definitely the best place I have ever lived, mainly due to the community spirit and the nature all around - the beach is a bonus, but it is not the 'deal breaker' for me.
Hope you get to see it too one day.
      Take care,
      Paul

Thanks Paul. We enjoyed our trip down memory lane. 😊🏖 As soon as we saw the opening shot and the rock we said Thurlestone! We had a holiday there in May 2016 and we enjoyed the beach and local walks. We stayed in an old house down Ilbert Rd just behind the tennis courts. The house was supposed to have an enclosed garden....but surprise surprise it did not! One of our little dogs ran through bushes to a big garden behind us. The owner wasn't in. The dog ran up and down the lawn having a great time! Eventually she returned! On a rainy day I went on the bus to Kingsbridge. Lots of little roads in that area.

Although we could hear the sea, the sound recording was excellent and the camera really steady. You did right not to risk your camera on a tripod.
It's good to see that there are still unspoiled villages near the coast. There's no escaping the car parking charges wherever you are these days, unless you don't have one!!
Hope you had some better weather for the rest of your stay.

Glad you enjoyed it. I have lived in many places across the Westcountry in Devon and Cornwall as well as Gloucestershire, but I have to say I think that this was my favourite of all of them - very special, in lots of ways, but I think the two highlights are the sense of community, which is the closest to anywhere I have lived, and the spectacular sights and sounds of nature across both South Milton Ley and South Huish Ley reserves. Although the beach and car park got busy in the summer, the village didn't really. The best of the best, in my opinion, but it probably isn't for everyone, especially as there is no shop, or pub and non-existant public transport.
      Take care,
      Paul

Your pleasure at being back in the South Milton area just leapt off the screen! It is unusual to find somewhere in Devon that is not a tourist haven. I hope it was very much as you left it!
Thank you for showing us the church- I like a church that is full of flowers even on the font- it definitely adds to the atmosphere.
Your microphone didn’t falter in that gale & was so sensitive that it picked up the clicking of the gate & your footsteps in the wet at the church!
I loved the ‘snail post’ weren’t they mostly huge specimens?( all on the sheltered side- not exposed to the gales haha) & yes the horizontal tree said it all. A very enjoyable video- thanks Paul!

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  Місяць тому

Thank you Diana - it is by far the nicest place that I have ever lived, and I don't mean because of the views or beach, but the community and general 'feel' of the place. Somewhere that will forever remain very special to me and my family.
You are also right - it really isn't a tourist haven either. Probably because the roads are narrow and it "lacks facilities" in tourists eyes. I personally think it is teeming with facilities of the natural kind.
I do hope it can remain unspoilt and undeveloped. Sadly, neigbouring Thurlestone has been going that way since the 1950s with very large and out of proportion detached houses, but, that village too does have a commuity and some lovely thatched cottages in parts of it.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!
