This film wasn't trying to justify marrying your rapist. In the 90s if a girl was raped nobody would marry her because her virginity had been lost. Her life was ruined. The film was trying to show there are consequences to your actions.

How could this movie even be released? It's appalling to suggest that a woman should marry her rapist and then try to love him. How can anyone fall in love with their rapist?
Throughout the film, her in-laws try to kill her several times, yet she forgives them in the end. This film sends a terrible message that women should forgive their rapists and abusers.
Furthermore, at the end, Raj's sister is killed by Raj's sister-in-law and maternal uncle, but she doesn’t get justice. Rani Mukerji's character is portrayed as foolish for forgiving the people who killed her sister-in-law.
Overall, this movie is awful and gives a disgusting message.
