True point on the fast talker thing. But let's be honest, Beetlejuice and Genie actually pulled it off and it's fantastic.
Plus, Genie wasn't really a dick. He was loudmouth and cocky, but he also cared about Aladdin and regretted when he went against him unwillingly.
@@bananatiergod Exactly it had heart and so did the movie Beetlejuice.
I agree about Beetlejuice but the Aladdin movie annoyed me even as a kid
No one ever brings up the darkest aspect of the movie: the big monsters go out, find kids, and trick them into coming down into their world, where they are then trapped forever and mutated into some sort of freakshow monster. Watch the baseball scene, which you somehow forgot to show. It's all little kids in costumes. They're all missing children, trapped in a dark netherworld, forced to scare and kidnap other kids for the evil monster boss. They even had a party set up for Brian when he finally turned. Maurice isn't a hero, he was working with the bad guy for the whole movie, almost got five kids trapped in a nightmarish hell, and finally had a crisis of conscience at the end of it all.
I'm fully convinced this movie is about pedophiles.
Abducting kids by luring them in with "fun" and "no rules" while they slowly groom them only to be taken advantage of. The monsters one weakness, light or exposure.
Before these kids realize what's going on they have become monsters themselves.
@Dean Gulberry I'm not part of that crew, but to be fair, two of the movies the Critic has reviewed have had that kind of theme to them. Milk Money and Blank Check.
So my brother found a copy of this movie on a dirt road..........I can only imagine why it was there.
I kinda liked the movie the first time but that was the first time and I can't help but look away from the movie most of the time now.
@@dr.rodabthicc personally i find it interesting for the conisidence of danel stern.
I love that the Mom asked what they were doing in California not “How did you get to California, or even “Are you okay?”
The parents divorcing subplot is just as useless as the one in Jurassic World
Spoder Men Well I'll definitely agree that it was useless because I have no memory of that scene.
It had no meaning to the story or lead anywhere within the story.. It should of been a one of the deleted scenes..
Actually, there was a point in JW. The kids were sent to the aunt, because the parents were busy getting the papers in order.
They would not have been there at all, if the parents were not getting a divorce.
It also presents a reason why they should "stick" together, in spite of the age difference. The big brother is at the age where they typical want to be independence, but he is "forced" to take care of his little brother. He is reluctant about it, but also understand that it is a hard time for his little brother.
(as most big brothers at that age would rather just walk around alone, than spending time with their little brother).
In other words, the subplot assist in telling why they are on the island, and their relation and interaction with each other.
In Little Monsters, I guess there is a point with the brothers having to "stick together", since they wont be able to rely on their parents.
It is just shown in a really mumbled way, and we already had an incentive for the big brother to look after the little brother(as the big brother is the one responsible for monsterworld/humanworld interaction).
But what kind of parent would send their kids alone, unless there was a "good" reason for it?
And if they simply won tickets, the older brother would not have an incentive to stick around his younger "less cool"(snort) younger brother.
I mean, a young man in his late teens, on an island without his parents, would not be "hanging" with his much younger little brother, unless there was a reason(in this case, comfort him during the divorce).
To be fair, the Genie isn't annoying or a jerk.
He's a teeny bit annoying. Esp in the sequels and tv cartoon series where Robin Williams is absent. They got the guy who plays Homer Simpson to do the voice. I was optimistic, at first...
I actually legit love Little Monsters, the fact that Brian and Eric were actually played by real life brothers Fred and Ben Savage added to their chemistry, especially when Brian has to save Eric, you can tell he is genuinely concerned for his brother.
it was a movie. It was all acted and directed. The younger brother was never in any danger, so why would the older brother be concerned?
@@robbiebell7222 Because as a character he was worried about his brother, my point was that it was well acted because given their real relationship I at least felt like he was channeling how he would’ve felt in that situation in real life which made it all the more real and a better performance.
If case any one was wondering, an over the shoulder boulder holder is a large bra.

Cancerous Gaming Inc. No no don't it's a bad idea no soul is ready to see that
The point of this film should've been Brian turning into a monster because he got more and more nasty and he only figures this out when it's nearly too late to reverse it. Sometimes the more obvious plot would've been the better one.
That was the plot of the movie, wasn't it? Or was that a lot of sarcasm? I'm confused.
That was probably considered, this may have been a horror movie in its original draft. Only becoming a 'kids movie' when the script was salvaged from the shredding room.
Matthew Waddington actually it was always considered to be a family film but the script was changed
@@matthewwaddington2777 well the Wikipedia said this movie was a Black Comedy film meaning it probably made not just for kids.
This movie reminds me of the Disney Channel Movie "Don't Look Under The Bed" which features the boogeyman and like a land where the other sock got lost?? and at one point the imaginary friend turned evil? I don't remember much but I remember it scaring me as a kid. Anyone else watch that?
The “80’s Montage” bit is one of my favorite Nostalgia Critic bits ever. I find it hilarious that the movie scene is actually edited that way
I love the fact that the "bully" in this did absolutely nothing wrong.
The asshole main kid throws a sandwich at him, messes up his lunch and gets his pal to piss in his drink while actively mocking him for sleeping with a teddy bear and all the "bully" does is punch him once in retaliation (and deservedly so), I mean he even comes back to help him save his brother at the end even though he has no possible motivation to and your still expected to dislike him.
I was always confused as to why the “bully” shows up to help at the end. We see Maurice showing up to wake him up, but we never get any scenes about why he agreed to help or how Maurice may have motivated him to do so
@@bio-exorcist9949 I just rewatched the movie and the ending was all over the place, good point. I remember this movie being more fun and whimsical as a kid, it will always be nostalgic for me tho.
@@bio-exorcist9949 As a kid, I always just kind of saw it as he was helping for the greater good and the magnitude of the scenario involving a kidnapping.
The director must of been in a very mean spirited sate of mind when making this film.
Swearing kids in this movie remind me of kids from Goonies.
I hope to see a review on Goonies someday.
Thats one thing i really miss about kids movies from the 80's and 90's. They had light swearing, occassional smoking, sometimes drinking. Nowadays kids movies have adults drinking apple juice out of tumbler glasses and are afraid to even use the word "smoking" outside of a PSA where the smoker gets stage 4 cancer from half a cigarette
I remember watching this when I was a kid and even then, I too thought it was pretty mean-spirited. The scene where the monsters go into the baby's room for the sole purpose of scaring her and making her cry is the part I remember the most; I found it disturbing when I watched it.
I’m convinced the only reason that scene exists is to make Brian finally have a conscience and realize that maybe these monsters aren’t really who he needs to associate with. They have no morals. Even Maurice doesn’t feel bad about scaring the baby. It was.... messed up
@@bio-exorcist9949 yeah especially it was right after Maurice is genuinely sad about Brian’s shitty parents I thought he would comfort him more and realize what he is doing is selfish and if he wants to be Brian’s friend he needs to act like it and stop being a bad influence on him
But I guess you gotta remember Maurice is still a kid too like Brian and probably at that stage where right and wrong is still blurry and just wants to do what he wants
He does dress like a punk after all and they are all about rebelling
Monsters Inc isn't decent, it's awesome. Get it right!

People can have opinions. Nostalgia Critic said that while he doesn’t view the movie as a masterpiece he does enjoy it.
At least Robin Williams was funny as the Genie.

I wondered why this movie thought that cruel pranks to the innocent is ever funny...? Is it because it's funny to see their reactions to people accusing them or it's just for the LOLs?
It's nice (i.e., reassuring, I guess?) to know that there are persons other than myself who find those sorts of 'pranks' not funny at all, but repulsive and downright painful...! I'd never seen this movie, and I'm glad that I never did, despite how many might say it's 'just a kids' movie'... Some things are just not worth watching at any age.
Pranks supposed to be harmless and something you can laugh it off with everyone... Not when you made someone cried, scared, or pissed off...
I'm guessing they just wanted some kids they just wanted some kids they know to stop egging their house.
Yeah, I actually found the full clip of all the parents yelling at those children, and I gotta tell you...that would be one memorable parent-teacher/PTA conference.
The Mask is a good example of the energetic 90s and 80s acting thing you described around 7:50
Daniel Stern, who played the dad, also did the voice for Fred Savage on The Wonder Years didn't he? How fun!

( if you haven't watched the video yet, i probably sound like a maniac.)
I watched the shit out of this movie when I was a lad and I absolutely loved it. Being a kid, I never questioned anything. The underworld looked cool to me and I liked how disturbing some parts were, though I watched a lot of horror as a kid. I watched it again as an adult (think I've got it on DVD somewhere) and I still had fun with it. I guess for the same reason my girlfriend loves Mac n Me... nostalgia.
I die at that montage part!
This movie legitimately terrified me as a kid. Especially when that creepy guys face got ripped off at the end.
"How could any kid not in their right mind enjoy this?" Well, they're not in their right mind :P
Never really understood why people ever cast Howie Mandel in anything. I guess it proves knowing the right people is better than being good at anything.
So would that mean that Herman's head is the yang to inside out's yin?
I actually really enjoy little monsters, even today. It's one of my favorite movies from when I was young.
I love how genuinely afraid Brian seemed when he found out that Eric was gone, it’s almost like Fred was imagining how he would feel if Ben disappeared, so he could channel real emotions!
I'll never look at Howie Mandel the same ever again...
A naked April O'Neil covered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce? Whoever has a DeviantArt account, get to work on that and send it to the Critic!
Two of the several differences between the other supernatural beings that came out around that time is that the Genie is still enjoyable. Granted, it's fun to watch Beetlejuice, but Robin Williams's timing is so much better and isn't annoying.

Interesting to reference "The Wonder Years" when Daniel Stern is the one who did the voiceover in that show.
His reviews were a lot funnier when he wasn’t playing dress up and recreating the stupid scenes as he was telling us how they were stupid. If they’re stupid scenes why make us watch your version of them?
Douchy McNitpick: "You forgot to make a Boy Meets World reference for Ben Savage!"
The father (Daniel Stern) in this movie did the narration for the Wonder Years. Inception much? lol.

Maybe Maurice was another kid who came to the world of monsters, and was turned into one. Wouldn't this be kind of sad, and intriguing?
man i remember watching this as a kid on disney but its amazing how many horrible things that can be overlooked that really makes that person uncomfortable when seeing it as a adult but really nothing gave me nightmares now the scene were the birds take their heads off from labyrinth will probably mentally scar most kids and maybe half the adults as well
The bully drinking the piss is the same kid that played Buzz in home alone
Yes. Devin Ratray. He was 12 when Little Monsters was filmed in Mid 1988.
He also reprised his role as Buzz in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and played one of the babysitters in Dennis the Menace from 1993.
"Brian's got a girlfriend! Brian's got a girlfriend!"
What exactly did the director tell Howie Mandel? Behave like a child?
1. It's the 80s, it's gonna be weird and scary, just how it was.
2. Maybe movies don't need a moral or a lesson, maybe they just wanna tell a story.
3. It's the 80s, pranks and stuff were just mean spirited. That's literally what a prank is.
4. Would you expect a kid who looks and talks like Fred Savage to be anything other than an asshole?
I think the movie was just made to have fun with some visuals, ideas, and actors, like most movies in the 80s. That's why I like it. It's just kinda fun. I respect the critics opinion on it. Just playing devil's advocate.
little monsters was a big favorite for me as a kid, rented it constantly
"Over the shoulder boulder holder!" Okay I'm writing that one down.
7:09 At least Beetlejuice and Genie did it well. -__-
Little Monsters: Because everyone's a bit of an asshole :P
In all seriousness though, this is yet another great example of a kid's movie that could be re-worked into a horror movie:
A monster shows up and befriends a child who is alienated and miserable due to his parents moving to another town and get divorced, maybe the move was even part of the plan to divorce in the first place for some reason. The parents, especially the father, become more frustrated because of their failed marriage and start taking it out on their kids, the elder brother specifically.
The boy is taken in to the monster world and everyone there welcomes him with open arms and everything seems great as now he has a place to escape to when he needs to escape from his increasingly horrific home life. He begins to turn into a monster and discovers that the monsters he thought were his friends begin to show their cruelty and in fact were originally humans at one time, too.
The principal reminded me of the teacher in Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall" music video!
Lol
I absolutely love Little Monsters... it's one of my favorite childhood movies...
Also, I was named after the Red Head. Her name is Kiersten. Seriously. My dad named me after her
You know what's hilarious about Daniel Stern being in this movie? He turned down Home Alone 3 because it was "a crap script". This means that Little Monsters is better than Home Alone 3.
Anyway Fred is a very good actor, even in here he is natural and funny to watch, actually vibrant and emotionally involved and shows it.
I actually really liked this movie. I saw it in theaters when I was a kid.
