What’s worse is that they framed it as “training” for the “real industry”. If you can’t handle this, you’ll never make it in the REAL modeling world, blah blah blah. Yeah, no. In the modeling industry, you have every choice as to what jobs you go to a casting for. ALSO the girls who went on the show could not get work after! There was a stigma around the contestants, it was embarrassing! Not worth going on the show at allll.
Framed it as the Olympics of modeling, modeling "bootcamp". Some were exaggerated but most not. Plus it was for tv and it worked since they got 24 cycles plus dozens of international versions with dozens of cycles of their own.
@@kimberleywilliams7802esp after cycle 5/6. But that still didn't stop millions of girls and then guys from auditioning year over year across 2 decades of time. The over all sucess rate is around 30% of people who stuck with modeling and or found monetary gains. That's in America. KNTM AND VNTM had massively successful winners and contestants. Across all cycles.
ginger: doesn’t want to pose nude. becky: “ginger only took two pictures, it’s not fair to everyone else. she should get eliminated.” also becky: cries because she doesn’t want to pose nude. ???
i think from her point of view she also didnt want to pose naked but she had to suck it up and do it but ginger got a leeway. Doesnt make it right but thats where i think her frustration came from.
I’m almost ashamed of myself for not recognizing how problematic and toxic this show was. I mean I was a kid when it first started airing, but so many of these moments (the black face and treating cultures as costumes, the obviously bigoted contestants and participants, forcing the models to pose nude, the unsafe modeling shoots, traumatizing contestants, etc) are obviously not okay.
Bc we were taught that was how the industry was. Tyra did always state that. Her show was based off of the standard of the industry at that time. And honestly it was like that with regular jobs too. Jobs used to have so much power and treat employees like straight crap now it’s a lot better.
@NompiloKhumalo-jm7sm I wasnt even that young back then I was in my late teens but like I said in the comments I watched with my mom and we didnt think anything was wrong.
Please don’t let social media scare you into thinking that people wearing other culture clothes is a bad thing because other cultures love it, and they indulging it. Dressing up another culture, clothing, or even trying to emulate that culture is not disrespectful in any way shape or form. Cultures are meant to be shared and meant to be enjoyed by the greater part of society and humanity, as well as meant to be seen as beautiful
I briefly worked for Kelly Cutrone at People's Revolution, before her appearance on ANTM. She knows, as many industry insiders do, that most of those photos wouldn't work in real life, which is why so few of the contestants truly made it as top models, doing high fashion editorial and runway.
according to the models themselves who went to Oliver Twixt’s interview, most of the photos they took in ANTM were editorial, high fashion and a little bit “out there” to say the least lmao but they said casting jobs preferred simple and studio shot photos for their portfolios
I’m tall so naturally everyone has always told me to model and as a young girl I thought about it often. No joke, this show ruined it for me. Lol I didn’t know how close to the industry the show was but I knew I wouldn’t fare well in 98% of those shoots so I sat it out 😂😂
In nda interviews, a lot of models even ones with more contentious storylines admit they would do it all over again if given the choice. You missed out.
It seems like the show’s producers were taunting some of these girls with some of the photoshoot themes. It’s giving humiliation ritual. Tyra was so trash.
@@dasiareed2708it’s deeper than you think lol. Humiliation rituals get views, it’s like watching a train wreck. You want to look away but you look, that’s why selling your soul makes you popular. You’re not actually selling your soul to the devil (whose name is Iblis, look it up) but you’re going against God and it’s shocking to people by how immoral one is being
With all the Caucasian countries to choose from they decided to go with black face. If they were so worried about being diverse, they could’ve cast more POC’s.
this is what pisses me off the MOST. tyra geeking over all these ethnic combinations when there are beautiful ppl like that who *actually exist in the world* but they couldn’t be bothered to cast those ppl. they’d rather construct a caricature in their own warped image. nastyyyyyy.
Ginger? She had a respectable career after. I remember her comp card specifically states she doesn't do noodles. She stuck to her conviction and made it work. But it definitely impacted her work prospects somewhat.
What struck a nerve in me is all of the hypocritical contradictory advises they gave these girls. Like “you have to speak up when you reach your limits. We can’t tell and can’t read your minds,” but then “be professional and suck it up to win”. Each time someone spoke up it backfires and they’re on the chopping block. Caridee, Keenyah, and Jada are were scolded and victim blamed. Tyra and Jay Manuel were such self righteous assholes.
What I never understood about making them pose nude is that Tyra herself has NEVER posed nude. She “simulated” nudity, but was never fully nude like the girls had to be. she admits it too. But yet she still had a full on career so to pressure the girls and make them feel like “if you don’t do this, you’re not cooperating and will get sent home” is insanely hypocritical.
The amount of gaslighting and manipulation from Tyra and the judges is sickening. I was obsessed with this show when I was little, I thought they were expects in modelling and the girls should always listen to them. I even wanted to be a model myself. Now I realised that the girls that didn't make it in the house were actually protected. The rejection was definitely protection
Omg I’m so here for this. Who remembers that horrific episode where the young ladies had to pose in coffins? Not to mention while being six feet under. 🤦🏽♀️
But if one of the girls got seriously injured or died from one of these dangerous challenges, it would be: "ANTM takes the safety of our competitors VERY seriously" 🙄
When Winnie Harlow was on ANTM in 2014 one of the photographers Yu Tsai kept calling her a “panda” during her photoshoot. She was rightfully pissed off. Later, she confronted him and told him that it would be a bad influence on the youth to say that. He tried to justify himself by saying he called her a panda out of love…Bullshit. Highly melanated people have a much harder blow to their mental health and confidence because of the stark contrast when they have vitiligo. It just amazes me realizing how strong people like Michael Jackson and WH are to have put up with that (and everything else) and still be positive.
@@Bee-lieve623 Rewatching that clip makes my blood boil. He was so aggressive and dismissive; gaslighting her like crazy. He told her calling her Panda was a 'soft nickname' if she couldn't take it, he'd call her "porcupine" instead...crazy.
It’s crazy to think production could have done so much to help the girls or even make situations more comfortable for them it breaks my heart to see people being abused to achieve their dreams
Watching how these women were HORRIBLY treated, especially the darker-skinned Black women, js SICKENING to watch!!! Tyra seemed to take all her anger on Naomi out on them & consistently ABUSED them & perpetuated several colorist aggressions, too. Disgusting
@@OBBThicc04 this is their predecessor. They wouldn’t even feel comfortable producing shows with this same tone x10 if it weren’t for ANTM walking so they could run.
@@NeptuneMartian That is true. It's almost a cautionary because the modeling industry is no joke.Just imagine the drugs, the belittling, the assaults outside of this show.
I don’t think Tyra is evil she is just a product of her environment. The modeling industry is cruel but instead of making a change she continued to be toxic and being on TV just made it worse. The things they put these girls through for TV is crazy. I remember how they broke Toccora down and then asked her why she was so quiet now. She was so confident and secure with her weight and they didn’t like that.
I honestly don't think that tyra did anything like the vast majority of the photoshoots on ANTM in her actual modelling life. These shoots were clearly created for shock value entertainment not reality stuff.
And somehow you'd think this could only be an expected disaster for a reality show to go with-JEEZ people were just saying anything back then that would likely be a death sentence in 2024 hah nevermind 1924 This is the kinda stuff that makes me unable to relate to this woke culture, the young people. Wow thank God for the internet as these clips remind us of how far we've come and futher work that still needs to be done. Racism, Abuse, Mysogyny...none of these ladies should have been forced to continue in those positions
40:35 Omg poor Kenya. I don’t remember this episode but I’m sorry to see no one had her back despite her telling the crew she was being made to feel uncomfortable. That male model was definitely inappropriate 😖
After posing in Maxim I was scouted off MySpace for this show. So glad I wasn’t chosen. I was friends with Keenyah for a few years when she moved here 😅 I didn’t realize so many girls I met in the club were on that show. I stopped watching after Cycle 4 once I graduated from college. It seemed childish.
I truly thank God for His patience and grace in my life. I say this because i am truly bothered that I use to be entertained by this in High School. This series was set out to destroy some spirits man.
I used to watch this weekly with my mom as I wanted to be a model. I thought Tyra was really trying to mentor these girls. However the way they overly criticized them on the panel every week I felt it was extremely overboard. The one that makes me cringe is with Yaya and they questioned her heritage choice because she didn’t or did (can’t remember) pick the kente cloth.
I hate competition shows because you can't advocate for yourself out of fear of being eliminated. It makes for a nasty and dangerous dynamic. Tyra didn't care about those girls for one second. We all know if someone said the water was too cold and stopped then that person would've been eliminated and made fun of by the judges for being too weak.
This show was so bad especially for young girl's esteems. Incredibly contradictory and bully vibes. Ridiculous how they were treated, also the race swaping is insane...
They could have done that grave photoshoot literally ANYWHERE you can’t even tell they were in an actual grave- could have done it with cgi walls. They tortured her for views
The girl at 4:51 telling her she’s obviously not doing what it takes is the exact kind of person to end up exploited, abused and taken advantage of. That girl was smart for standing up for herself and what she felt was right. “I’m gonna wanna see confidence, like you’re comfortable in your own skin..almost like you have clothes on”😐Maybe someone once told him the same thing..
Great video, My sisters and cousins use to watch this show, If Tyra said what she said about being Homeless for a day during the height of the social media era, she would've gotten destroyed. This show wouldn't last a season if it were made these days. Tyra herself would've gotten cancelled.
These girls were abused for entertainment. And we all, as well as them, thought it was “what they had to do to make it”. I don’t blame the girls or the viewers, I blame the producers, Tyra, and the other judges. They had no compassion whatsoever.
If those girls are literally stopping photoshoots to tell you how uncomfortable they felt with those creepy men around, Tyra and production should have kicked the men off set immediately. It’s actually painful looking back on what these poor women went through my goodness 😣😖 to think this was the SHOW to watch growing up!!
I don’t know who’s worse, Tyra, or Jay being completely insensitive and often looking irritated and inconvenienced at these women’s very real pain when he knows this show has orchestrated these challenges specifically to get a reaction from them. He’s an awful person.
i use to love this show as a teen. it's so problematic and pisses me off. tyra was a bully instead of actually teaching modeling and empowering these women. in the end she was just there for the views
THIS. And she admits it herself, she simulated nudity. For someone who never posed nude and made these girls feel like they had to in order to be in fashion, she’s had a very successful career.
They way that Jay does not give AF AT ALL 😤 when the ladies are clearly uncomfortable or vulnerable PISSES me off!! Like he looks like he genuinely does not care. Crazy.
Ugh so many of these episodes are disgusting, but the ones that always get me is Jayla. Like not only being in the situation with this disgusting racist man, but telling the people around you, WHO ARE ALSO BLACK, and them being so nonchalant. The misogynior that Tyra and the rest of the cast perpetuated is so obvious and unbearable to watch. I can't even imagine being in these girls shoes, having it broadcast to the world.
Never realised how problematic this show was when I was younger even going as far as saying that the models should suck it and work its not that bad. Now im much older Tyra and the rest of her team were really evil. It actually crazy how long this show lasted without people trynna sue the show.
I feel so bad for Kenya. If you pause the video at 45.46, you can very clearly see he is turned on. I get it, men can get turned on simply looking at a woman, but he should have had better control of himself. And the stylist should have used something to conceal his excitement. I'm glad it isn't as bad now as it was back then, but this is the type of behaviour and how the higher ups would dismiss women who had to deal with men like this in the workplace. What makes this shoot even worse was the fact that she spoke up about it.. you could CLEARLY see his excitement, AND then Jay had to tell him to stop grabbing her.. so they clearly knew what he was doing and still blamed her. It's disgusting.

ALSO the girls who went on the show could not get work after! There was a stigma around the contestants, it was embarrassing! Not worth going on the show at allll.
When I grew up and understood that the reality was not as harsh, I seriously e-evaluated this show
Framed it as the Olympics of modeling, modeling "bootcamp".
There's a special place in hell specifically for Tyra and Jay Manuel.
and Ellen
ginger: doesn’t want to pose nude.
becky: “ginger only took two pictures, it’s not fair to everyone else. she should get eliminated.”
also becky: cries because she doesn’t want to pose nude.
???
That was so confusing to me.
Projection is a deadly disease
i think from her point of view she also didnt want to pose naked but she had to suck it up and do it but ginger got a leeway. Doesnt make it right but thats where i think her frustration came from.
This was "High Fashion" Fear Factor
I’m almost ashamed of myself for not recognizing how problematic and toxic this show was. I mean I was a kid when it first started airing, but so many of these moments (the black face and treating cultures as costumes, the obviously bigoted contestants and participants, forcing the models to pose nude, the unsafe modeling shoots, traumatizing contestants, etc) are obviously not okay.
Don't be ashamed, we've all been kids and naive. There's nothing to be ashamed of
Bc we were taught that was how the industry was. Tyra did always state that. Her show was based off of the standard of the industry at that time. And honestly it was like that with regular jobs too. Jobs used to have so much power and treat employees like straight crap now it’s a lot better.
I totally agree like how did we not see that something was wrong here? I dont know what shifted our way of thinking eventually.
And the whole kicker is NONE of the photoshoots they did could work for a portfolio
Really?
The photos were not editorial they sucked.
Eylse's agency wanted her to use the sports NFL photo in her portfolio.
I tried out for this show in 2005, kinda glad I didn't make it now. Everything happens for a reason 🙏🏽
Sometimes rejection is protection.
I sent in an application as well. Glad I wasn't picked 😂😂😂
I would've cussed Tyra ass out lol. Because literally no one but Tiffany actually addressed her BS at the time.
How did Tiffany address it?
Jay manual want to play the victim now but wasn’t uncomfortable then. The producers on the show were very messy.
‘First of all you can’t cry cause we don’t have time to fix your makeup’ 🙄
That was low-key cruel. It's giving "U are a property to us, we don't care about how u feel coz we have money to make"
@@RecoveringChristian okay idiot
Pissed me off so bad. I know it’s a show but he had such a nasty attitude all the time.
It seems like the show’s producers were taunting some of these girls with some of the photoshoot themes. It’s giving humiliation ritual. Tyra was so trash.
More so the producers knew it’ll be good tv not everything is a stupid ritual
@@dasiareed2708it’s deeper than you think lol. Humiliation rituals get views, it’s like watching a train wreck. You want to look away but you look, that’s why selling your soul makes you popular. Same thing I thought
With all the Caucasian countries to choose from they decided to go with black face. If they were so worried about being diverse, they could’ve cast more POC’s.
this is what pisses me off the MOST. tyra geeking over all these ethnic combinations when there are beautiful ppl like that who *actually exist in the world* but they couldn’t be bothered to cast those ppl. they’d rather construct a caricature in their own warped image. nastyyyyyy.
I applaud the 1st girl. She stuck up for herself. One & done. 👏
Making them pose nude was crazy! They should have investigated this production. So many predatory things happened!
This is so wrong. Producers, judges and show runners are all problematic and should be investigated
Watching this now as a adult/mother.. my flabber is gasteddd!!
This show was entertaining and toxic as hell
right
I don’t like Jay Manuel at all. He was Tyra’s bull dog.
She/herself was a bull dog as well. 🫤
this show was sick! Tyra Banks and everyone else on that panel is a monster!
Amen !!!
Omg I’m so here for this. Who remembers that horrific episode where the young ladies had to pose in coffins? Not to mention while being six feet under. 🤦🏽♀️

oh my god all the victim blaming from the judges, this is so awful, i feel so bad for these girls
no type of protection
Jay Manuel's total lack of empathy towards these contestants makes my blood boil 🤬
But if one of the girls got seriously injured or died from one of these dangerous challenges, it would be: "ANTM takes the safety of our competitors VERY seriously" 🙄
I feel like Tyra wanted other people to experience the hell she went through. It’s sad but hurt people , hurt people .
But that's the actual reality of the modeling industry. I've been there it will drag you through the mud
I remember that
I forgot the nickname that he was going to call her after she told him that she didn't like being called Panda. But it made me curse when I heard it
Anytime a girl tries to stand up for herself, she's deemed problematic and made to be the season's villan
@@Bee-lieve623 Rewatching that clip makes my blood boil. He was so aggressive and dismissive; gaslighting her like crazy. He told her calling her Panda was a 'soft nickname' if she couldn't take it, he'd call her "porcupine" instead...crazy.
@@NompiloKhumalo-jm7smespecially if she's black
It’s crazy to think production could have done so much to help the girls or even make situations more comfortable for them it breaks my heart to see people being abused to achieve their dreams
They weren’t going to because they were the reason why the mistreatment happened. They produced the show.
the fact that these men who were assaulting these girls got to stay on set is horrific
Sometimes That Whole "How Much Do You Want It" Makes You Go Against Your Morals
Doing Things You Dont Wanna Do
Watching how these women were HORRIBLY treated, especially the darker-skinned Black women, js SICKENING to watch!!! Tyra seemed to take all her anger on Naomi out on them & consistently ABUSED them & perpetuated several colorist aggressions, too. Disgusting
That one biracial model who had to do blackface and the hapa photoshoot were the moments that came to mind.
This show was very problematic on all levels!
I used to watch it, but now I'm looking at it and wondering if this whole show was Tyra's way of humbling/punishing up and coming models.
TYRA was diabolical…
Y’all want to know who’s really diabolical? Mona Scott young, Natalie nunn… Jocelyn Hernandez

Yeah. She didn’t do the drugs and alcohol but she would do what “people” told her would work for her
nah tyra always went out of her way to be mean and evil. even as a 13 year old watching the show i remember feeling it.
The vast majority of evil people are just a product of their environment, but it’s still evil
I honestly don't think that tyra did anything like the vast majority of the photoshoots on ANTM in her actual modelling life. These shoots were clearly created for shock value entertainment not reality stuff.

After posing in Maxim I was scouted off MySpace for this show. So glad I wasn’t chosen.
Oh yeah, she didn't pick the kente cloth hat because the material felt cheap
@@Bee-lieve623 Then if she didn’t pick it then it would have been why didn’t you embrace your heritage
Forcing people to get naked in front of the world is never ok
I hate competition shows because you can't advocate for yourself out of fear of being eliminated. It makes for a nasty and dangerous dynamic. Tyra didn't care about those girls for one second. We all know if someone said the water was too cold and stopped then that person would've been eliminated and made fun of by the judges for being too weak.
I still cannot believe they put one of the white models in blackface.
Tyra was taking all her anger out from Naomi Campbell on her contestants.
This show was so bad especially for young girl's esteems. Incredibly contradictory and bully vibes. Ridiculous how they were treated, also the race swaping is insane...

Tyra Banks is evil !! 😂
I hate how Mr. Jay tried to push all the blame on Tyra. Being CREATIVE DIRECTOR, he was just as problematic, if not more so.
Exactly! You're one of the ones that created those photo shoots... I don't know why he's trying to play victim now.
The challenge on top of that building in the freezing rain actually started to make me cry and anxious. WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT??
These girls were abused for entertainment. And we all, as well as them, thought it was “what they had to do to make it”. I don’t blame the girls or the viewers, I blame the producers, Tyra, and the other judges. They had no compassion whatsoever.
If those girls are literally stopping photoshoots to tell you how uncomfortable they felt with those creepy men around, Tyra and production should have kicked the men off set immediately. It’s actually painful looking back on what these poor women went through my goodness 😣😖 to think this was the SHOW to watch growing up!!
And then Mr. Jay having to tell the male models to ease up on the groping during Keenyah's photo shoot...shouldn't that be setting alarm bells off?

That made me jump! So awful.
They way that Jay does not give AF AT ALL 😤 when the ladies are clearly uncomfortable or vulnerable PISSES me off!! Like he looks like he genuinely does not care. Crazy.

Jay manuel is just as guilty dont let him slide. Tyra was constantly throwing shade at naomi.
