      To be fair, it was a blue belt. However, whenever I see a higher ranked BJJ player getting subbed by a Judoka, it can reflect poor quality issues among BJJ schools since BJJ has no regulation like Judo and/or the Judoka is exceptional like having a background in Kosen competition since Kosen competitors do usually have better newaza than the typical Judoka.

      Talk about techniques not allowed in judo. You are not allowed to shoot for the legs because reasons. The silly rule of restarting a stalled ground match on feet leads judokas trying desperate throws. You just wait and take their backs after a failed throw. The fact is, BJJ has far less limitations vs judo. Therefore it’s more effective vs judo under its broader rule set.

      BJJ grapplers are way to confident and cocky that they are the best.... they go in they pull that bullshit guard play and when you have a Judoka with a good strong base he nullifies it.. the BJJ guy got tired from constantly defending and the Judo guy was able to submit him with the most basic of armbars.

      no matter how good you are, even a top olympian can't just escape a proper osaekomi. BJJ athletes are just not used to be pinned that well and for that long

    • @4c00h
      @4c00h 8 років тому

      You're right it depends who's on top but I've been doing Judo for 8 years and BJJ for 7 and I'm pretty sure your statement is questionable. It also depends on who you're trying to hold down.Do you really think you could hold someone like Marcelo Garcia or Rafa Mendez for long? (In any position for that matter)

    • @physicalactivityscience1821
      @physicalactivityscience1821 8 років тому +4

      If you have been doing Ne-waza for that long (especially from both BJJ and Judo perspectives), you know that Judo players can pin like BJJ players don't. BJJ players just dont practice that, it's useless to pin someone under IBJJF/ADCC for longer than 2 or 3 seconds, so a defender either avoids/escapes immediately the pin or he/she just lays down there and rests, slowly waiting for a window. In IJF rules, the defender has to give hell and his/her life in order to escape that pin, while the attacker has to specialize in immobilizing and slowly tweak&squeeze in his/her position, like an anaconda for those 20/25 seconds. About Marcelo Garcia escaping pins, only testing it would give an answer, but I'm pretty convinced that there are pins that he couldnt even move more than his eyes, unless he is some Indian God with several arms... Many people don't realize this, but I'm sure that you, like me, practicing both disciplines, understand that the main difference between Judo Ne-waza and BJJ is shaped by the rules of both sports, because the art in itself its pretty similar.

      Not sure about the general scope - I've had some top quality instructors, Morgan Endicott-Davies for judo (Olympian medalist) and Carlos machado, Elvis Sinosic, Claudio calasans (world champion) and Robert Drysdale (submitted Marcelinho). The judo school I went to was quite Newaza oriented (50/50) and we learnt a lot of good holds that work well against untrained blue and purple belts. Once you get to the brown / black level those holds are tough to achieve in the first place but not impossible to escape. There are little tricks you can use to ease the process and this guy had no idea what to do he reminds me of my first tournament back in 2008 (I was orange he was black) and I couldn't get out of kesa gatame. I went back to judo after being a purple / brown in bjj and let the black belts pin me bottom down with my hands on my back and I could still escape them. Maybe the level where in South America / is a little different than where you're from as

      I make an effort not to speak about my own experience precisely because it can lead to comments like in your last sentence, which are not very fruitful for discussion. We all have personal experiences, and I could talk about my own, but using them to generalize is fallacious. The point was made in my previous comment, Judo players have more focus and background on immobilizing and escaping that pin fast, it's just shaped by the rules of the game... And like I wrote, there are certain osaekomi that when properly executed are close to impossible to escape (especially within the Ippon time), only escapable after longer period of time and depending on the level of relaxation of the attacker. Again, it~s all about the rules. If you put an elite football player on an elite futsal game, he can still play the game, but we will let some balls pass under his feet, he will get more tired and lose more balls, on the other hand, because of the football background he will be prepared to face a few specific circumstances of the game better than his counter part, like jumping and playing with his head or shooting on a distance. The same vice versa, a futsaler would in principle be more comfortable in 1vs1 circumstances in a 11 football match. Football and Judo are as tough as their derivatives Futsal and BJJ, but above all, it's about specificity and circumstancial skills. Once I fell from a horse and was able to roll into an ukemi ;)
