Thank you for making the second video ever on classic XCom.
Cover-based tile-based ranged turn-based combat feels like a genre that should have had more success stories. I'd love to know what about those other examples makes them fall short and if there are games that don't quite fit the genre but almost fill the niche well (like Valkyria Chronicles that really just misses the tile-based aspect).

Something that’s at least kind of similar is Space Hulk, specifically the 2013 game and Tactics. A really big caveat is that cover in Space Hulk pretty much only helps the aliens. See in Space Hulk, the 2 factions are space marines and a kind of alien called genestealers. The important part is that while the space marines have various guns, the genestealers rely entirely on melee attacks, so cover doesn’t really affect their attacks but it does affect yours. The whole thing has big *Aliens* movie energy
I downloaded open xcom a while back to play the warhammer 40k mod for it and its still the most enjoyable xcom game I know lol

Hey I have a question, but it's related to the UFO X-COM Defence game, I wasn't aware there is a community version of this game, does that version run mods by any chance? I remember some ppl running UFO X-COM Piratez mod and such, would it be compatible?
Tbf phoenix point and chaos gate slap but I'm struggling to finish their playthroughs because they are long because I'm bad

This game have so much charm : The 60's ambiance, the jazz, the little easter eggs, the charismatic characters, the surprising last act...
Far from perfect of course, but it's a shame he was so forgotten ! Nothing more satisfying than killing little greys while wearing cool hat and listening to rockabilly.
Hey have you played more Battletech? I'm a tabletop Battletech player, the actual Video Game was never my thing sadly. Mobility just gets punished too hard with its suppressive fire mechanics.

I don't get the Phoenix Point dig tbh.
It felt like pretty much the sole game that did anything more creative than % hit chances and also, movement and shooting being separate AND interchangeably usable action point costs was such a breath of fresh air next to the XCom's rigidity.
Jokes aside, I would be curious to hear your actual thoughts on XCOM Files (or any of the other UFO Defense megamods that are all a billion hours long for some reason.)

There actually was a real XCOM in the '60s, although it was EXCOMM. It was President Kennedy's Executive Committee that was active during the Berlin Wall being completed and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The ONLY reason I know about this game is purely because of a video STAR_ made a long time ago. Also nice to see a fellow Battle Brothers Legends enjoyer. 10/10 vid, u need more subs.

I personally think Invisible Inc is a fantastic game, but quality discussions aside, it's going for something totally different compared to other turn-based tactics games.

sure, a titanfall rts would be amazing but.
imagine a titanfall natural selection type game. its the same game but with a bigger focus on team vs team objective based matches where 1 player from each team is the commander, doing rts things.

Original Sin (Marvel Comics) is great. The Day the Earth Stood Still is good. MIB3 have his charm. I must try Fear Agent and X-Files.
Nahhh there's no way you included Invisible Inc in that list of "failed Xcom-esque games", it plays completely differently to the Xcom formula.
It really is a super fun game, too bad the early missions (not many skills unlocked) combined with suicidal friendly AI sometimes can be quite a chore in some parts.
Hey, I just stumbled over your channel and I wanted to ask:
When you discussed other games trying to be 'like XCOM' there wasn't any mention of Xenonauts, and while their sequel is currently a hot mess that isn't anywhere near a playable state the first one is an excellent 'update' of the basic concepts of UFO Defense. While I know from the video you find Firaxis' iterations with Enemy Unknown to be the ideal, I still think it bears mentioning.
I like this a lot but IMO its the middle of the Xcom spinoff games. Not as fun as Interceptor but far, far better then Enforcer
Felt like it should have been smaller scale like small battalions of mutons and sectoids

Oh hey! You been playing XCF? Awesome! The TCs are amazing and the game's engine is surprisingly robust! And XCOM Files, X-Piratez and... Yeah those two are connected to each other not so tangentially.
XCOM Files connecting as many games as possible is cool and the way our organization unravels how deep the rabbitholes go can merit a lore digest
I want to ask, have you played Gears Tactics? It's xcom like gears of war spinoff and I think it does the xcom thing really well
I was always so confused whenever the fraxis games alluded to more lore. I guess this game just had all the origins I guess
