@Carlos....I think the reason why the banana leaves are heated on fire is to make the fiber of the leaves softened and prevent it from tearing when wrapping the food. That is how we in the Philippines do also. Because if you don't heat the leaves, it is brittle and easily tear off or easily breaks apart that it's impossible to use it for wrapping. The heat somehow turns the fiber of the leaves strong and sturdy. The added bonus from that is the pleasant aroma that the food gets from the heated leaves.
