I'm glad VW hasn't given up on the GLI. However for the bump in price, I think rear seat vents should be standard on the GLI. Would a GTI in S trim be a better value? Off the top of my head, it would be missing the ventilated, memory, & power seat function, moonroof, upgraded audio, DCC, and dual zone climate. However the GTI gets more power, the upgraded digital cluster, led fogs, and small creature comfort such as the illuminated door handle, ambient lighting, heated steering wheel, and rear vents w/ usb c charging. Interesting comparison and probably a harder choice for someone actually cross shopping between these 2 models. The GTI S trim comes very well equipped imo. Excellent review as always.

I always wondered what goes on in vw heads. The gli has a bigger and wider back seat but no air vents. Meanwhile the gti is so small you could literally feel the air coming from the font vents but it has air vents. I feel they should of at least added vents to the backseat and not under the the seats.

After a year of ownership and driving many other cars, the GLI always surprises us with how versatile it can be while also being entertaining to drive. VW is a very reliable brand IMO, you just need to make sure you service it when it needs to. Now, if you tune your vehicle, it's common sense that it will void your warranty for any electric part that goes bad, or the engine that goes bad as a result of the tune. Most manufacture warranties wouldn't cover repairs, unless you have some other type of third party warranty that will.

I think that the main problem with his launches was that he was trying to launch like you would drive normally in traffic- trying to simultaneously lift off of the clutch pedal while giving gas at the same time. It's easy to be off in your coordination when trying to do that fast therefore you get chatter or the engine bogs down.
While I hate doing this in normal driving, he would have probably gotten a quicker time by revving the engine to about 1200-1500 RPMs before launching and then when it was time to go, ride the clutch a little bit. Granted, that's probably not great on the clutch, especially if you do it a lot but you won't get the clutch chatter and bogging that he did.
I have to say though, given the bit of a rough start, he got pretty good 0-60 times.

Very nice review! I really like that VW gives you a lot of features in this car. It has both heated/cooled seats but also a volume knob. I have a chronically sore back and I likely will never buy another car without heated seats. So that means no Civic Si for me. I also am not a fan of cloth seats. My local dealers are averaging about $4000 over msrp here in central Texas. VW dealers seem to be asking $1000 over msrp at the moment. That means these two cars are, for me at least, direct competitors. I could live with either one of them but I would probably buy the VW.

This might not be as sharp as the elantra n or the civic si but the quality and comfort is nicer than both for sure. Add to that the availability of the auto and it is the perfect car for my wife. She liked the "sportiness" while still be a rational daily driver and in canda it's a much better value than the US for whatever reason. Also the kings red looks super sharp with the black package. Add to that we get some better features like back seat USB and heated seats and a few other minor details it was a very easy choice. It was ordered in december and we should be picking it up very soon hopefully.

Are you sure about the back seat USB in the 2022 GLI? I am in Canada as well and very close to pre-ordering (Kings Red, black package...it is sharp), but don't see the back seat USB as a feature. My dealer says there isn't one. Really wish there was.

Too bad VW still holds out on making a full-on R version of the Jetta.
People will say go get an Audi S3 if you want an R version of the Jetta. The Audi S3 is smaller than the Jetta and the S3 is automatic-only. To me, they're both not even in the same calibur even if they are under the same automotive group.
If VW has a set of nuts between their legs big enough against all of their competition with the Jetta GLI, MK8 Golf GTI, and MK8 Golf R, they'd use the same formula if the Golf R and just carry it over in a Jetta R; Jetta GLR/Jetta GRI to be more specific.
Does a Jetta GLR/Jetta GRI have to have the 315hp out of the MK8 Golf R? No. It's last 288hp from the MK7 and MK7.5 Golf R would be sufficient, but if they wanted to make it an even 300hp and 290lb-ft of torque, no one wouldn't say no to that.
Just do it VW R Division. You'd be surprise at how many people would love an 'R' version of a Jetta. You don't know what the enthusiast market wants in North America. Stop assuming what you think we/they want and get yourself proven wrong.

    • @nelsonvanvickle8862
      @nelsonvanvickle8862 2 роки тому

Wishful thinking. But for VW, producing an all wheel drive sedan version of the Golf R would absolutely cannibalize Audi sales. Has nothing to do with the difference in size or transmission options between the S3 and the Jetta, because if VW offered a slightly larger version of the S3 in a cheaper Jetta most buyers would gravitate toward the Jetta.

Hi Sofyan, I just wanted to make a suggestion when you are trying to launch a car quick for the 0-60 times with a manual transmission.
You might want to rev the engine up a little before trying to launch, maybe about 1200 to 1500 RPMs and then when it is time to go, don't be afraid to ride the clutch a little bit when releasing it.
It seems like you were operating the clutch and the gas pedal the same as you would let's say, driving in traffic which is certainly the most appropriate way to drive a manual when you aren't trying to get a really fast launch. You'll probably even be able to release the clutch pedal a little faster because the engine RPMs are there to get the car moving faster.
The issue that, trust me, we all run into using that same method when trying to launch fast is that it's difficult to coordinate our left and right legs perfectly when trying to give the car gas while releasing the clutch fast- it's very easy to mis-time the process with one leg or the other and then you can either end up in a situation where the engine bogs down and had to recover its momentum or the clutch chatters and you don't get a good grab. We're trying to operate 2 different pedals with 2 different legs moving in the opposite direction from one another and with different amounts of resistance associated with the pedals that they are trying to operate. To make things worse, the more we think about it and try to have a good quick launch, the more likely we won't, at least from my experience.
If you rev the engine up a little bit before your launch and ride the clutch a little as you let it out, you shouldn't have the bog or chatter situation and the engine is essentially pre-loaded for your launch.
If you do try doing this, it may take some time to get everything dialed in for yourself and the car, it'll definitely take some practice to get it perfect however I think it'll help your 0-60 MPH launches a lot.
That being said, you got very respectable times on both of your 0-60 runs.
For anyone else reading this that might be looking for exactly how to drive a manual transmission, I want to say this is not something you should do in traffic unless you absolutely have to. Riding the clutch will cause your clutch to wear quicker, Sofyan's method he used here is the way you should normally drive a stick shift. When trying to get started on a hill, especially if you are new to a manual transmission, revving the engine a bit before releasing the clutch and then riding the clutch a bit can also be helpful, even in normal traffic because it makes it much more difficult to roll backwards or to stall when trying to move forward.
You should also put your car in neutral when sitting at a light or stopped and release the clutch because leaving your foot on the clutch while sitting can also cause wear on your clutch however I will say, keep a close eye behind you when you do. I came very close to getting rear-ended by a tractor trailer in my Sunfire with a 5-speed and because I noticed it a little late, I was shifting into first gear trying to get out of harm's way before I had a chance to fully depress the clutch pedal and I man-handled the heck out of the shifter to get it into first because of it but it was an emergency situation.
Keep up the great work, bud! By the way, I am sooooo happy that VW still offers us the manual on the GLI. [X][X] []
