1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced us to the terrifying, deformed villain known as Freddy Krueger. Throughout at least seven canon films, Freddy and his razored glove terrorized teens across twenty odd years on the silver screen; but what on Earth is he? A demon who inhabits the realm between dreams and reality? A ghost created by the animosity of his tormentors? Or could he be something else entirely? Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...

in the 80's, when the tv channels went off the air into the early AM morning. ALL the Major stations CBS, ABC and, NBC, played a Patriotic Post message/epilogue with the National Anthem playing and video of how the USA came to be through pictures i.e. Washington crossing the Delaware River, Pioneers, WW2, and the likes of the moon landing. Plus, this Movie's Director Wes Craven got the idea of this movie from a group of American Cambodian citizens (strangely ALL male) who were dying in their sleep.

The original Freddy might be a witch, but Freddy as a horror or supernatural being could also accurately be described as a Tulpa. Every time he comes back, it's due to the thought of him, and the original ending pretty much confirms it. Every time he dies, he does actually go away until the thoughts of him resurface.

@atotallynormalshark6330 I honestly... haven't seen any of the Elm Street movies, but just from the overall context, I'd say: Probably because people believe it will. Wes Kraven was inspired to make Freddy after he learned about a seemingly culture-bound syndrome among South Asian refugees that caused men to die in their sleep. The wave of deaths was believed to be caused by the refugee's very strong belief that their ancestors would come at night to punish them for fleeing their homeland. It's really fascinating to read about.

This was back right after the war when their power grid was pretty unstable. It was so successful of a propaganda effort that some of them still believe it today.
The OP was actually talking about something that happened to Laotian, Vietnamese, and Hmong men who were refugees from the Vietnam war. Many of whom died in their sleep because of the fact that a particular Heart condition is incredibly common among that demographic.

Honestly, this is a bit analogous to the problem of fatal sleep paralysis in, I believe Thailand. Apparently a legend of a demon who attacks men is so entrenched that every year, a few men die from sleep paralysis because they deeply and truly believe the demon exists, and they have heart attacks. I'm sure a fair amount survive it, but that's still very traumatic. Sleep paralysis is not typically fatal or injurous anywhere else in the world.

In the 80s-90s some channels on network television would always play the star spangled at the end of the broadcast day and then they would go to static until airing started again in the morning. In this case it is kind of symbolic as the end of the broadcast day is also the end of Glenn's life

I do unironically like freddy vs jason. I find whole Fire weakness themed vs Water weakness theme monster fight hilarious, so Jason being afraid of water because he drowned with Freddy hating fire because he burned was just a really clever concept. It makes sense because they are opposites, with Jason being simple and "efficient" and Freddy being manipulative and toying with people sadistically.
Jason never struck me as having dubious creepy motives behind his actions, he just wanted people to stop holding hands so hard on his Christian minecraft server, and freddy is fun to watch get curb stomped by his own plan backfiring into his stupid pizza face.

Wes Craven was also originally inspired by a series of deaths involving Cambodian refugees dying in their sleep in LA in the 70s/80s. Those deaths were often attributed to the Aswang within those communities, as well.

In Moldovian/Russian culture, they say if you die in your dreams you will live a long life. It's what kept me from being terrified every time i died in my dreams, specifically after moving to America in the 90s and being told the same "if you die in your dreams you die in real life". Maybe it really was bc of this movie series.

As a person who grew up during the 80's (I was born in '76), I can explain the Star Spangled Banner song playing. Back in the day, television programs didn't run 24-hours a day, so at a certain time, all the stations would stop broadcasting, & before they did, they would play that song. And it wasn't just one channel that shut down, it was all channels, of which there were a very small number (like three or four).

The only reason Lucid Dreamers couldn't perma-kill Freddy is because they lacked imagination. Just create a dream-weaving or dream prison artifact, use Freddy to bring him and it into the waking world, imprison him. No worries about him returning, he never dies to actually emerge again. Just imprisoned in the real world via his own power.

Back when I cared about this franchise I had a theory: Krueger was a modern-day, postmodern monster whose power came from stories. His powers mainly involved the power of stories, and he had to establish a fictional circumstance as part of his attacks. There were probably "fiction demons" in there somewhere, but who knows? The clever bit about that is that he could use any kind of "reason he could come back" that could be imagined, usually borrowed from other stories; however, every version of him had a rationale that also created a weakness to be exploited to end that version of him. "I'm powered by your fear!" Okay, but your victim doesn't fear you. "Oh, then it's because my body's not buried correctly!" Well, now we've consecrated your burial. "Okay, now I'm powered by stolen souls!" Well, the souls are free now. On and on, until he runs out of stories or until someone creates a story he can't refute. This is all just my own notion, but it's about as valid as anything the IP owners have said.

They hired someone else, thinking they'd get by cheaper, and whoever that was was a joke. They finally hired Robert back and cut in scenes with him. Robert Englund has MADE this character, the way his moves, the way he walks (slightly leaning to the right side because of the weight of the glove - that was him), his voice, the laugh, the snark. No one is going to replace him. UNLESS they do it the way Robert has suggested. Also the director for 2 was well known to be the real nightmare, and really messed up some people's lives with his BS.

Wes Craven got the concept of Freddie killing in dreams from a real life events. A family from Cambodia had a teen son who was terrified to sleep, he believed he’d die if he did. When they finally got him to sleep he died. There had been over 100 similar deaths in the 80s, I think all healthy SE Asian men between 25-45. I was thinking Freddie had more Tulsa vibes but your reasoning for a witch is pretty accurate. In the 1st movie Nancy never found the house key, she called Glenn’s house to speak to her dad & her dad broke down the front door after she set Freddie on fire. Nancy also introduced taking Hypnosil to suppress Freddie, she had been taking it & recommended it for the kids she was working with at Weston Hills, in the 3rd movie.

The unknown or lack of clarity of it all enhanced the horror.

I’m not sure the bit about ghosts pivoting around 31:16 is quite right. Those are modern paranormal theories about ghosts. But folklorically there are plenty of stories of “vengeful ghosts”, and of seeing dead family members, friends, etc. (ie. ghosts) in dreams. In the latter case there are frequently also parallel phenomena occurring outside of the dream(s) that make the happenings overtly supernatural. One example is the classic folkloric vampire story where your dead uncle or sibling or whatever comes and presses on your chest at night, and then you suddenly come down with consumption. I think Freddy Krueger is actually pretty classic as a malevolent ghost. There are aspects of him that seem demonic, but that was the case with folkloric vampires as well.
