Wish you would have put this out about a week ago. I just took my first go at marking a queen and it was a huge mess. I think she'll survive, but just about her entire back was painted! Live and learn...thanks!
Outstanding...big help! I haven't got stung yet (because I'm usually all suited up), but when I do get that first sting, I'm pretty sure I won't forget to say "ouch!"
Nice Don very nice! I was listening to Amber Rose on Craiges Southern Maryland Beekeeper Podcasts and she does bee sting therapy. I guess you get all the "Therapy" you need. lol. Thanks Don.
I purchased 6 packages of bees with clipped and marked queens in April 2017. The queens had been clipped on both sights down flush to their bodies . Two months later queens could not be found . There was no eggs , larvae or capped brood . What could have happened ? Did the workers kill them because they thought the queens were defective or did they die from being overly clipped ? There were pounds of honey in the frames and I had feed them with sugar water using bottled water . Thanks for any suggestions .
My blue hive has such is such a beautiful hive. They are hard worker and healthy. Mean, they are killers. In general they leave me alone in my yard, but working them they can be something else. Maybe I am wrong, but I have left the queen in the hive and not replaced her. I am sure that i am doing things wrong also. These days I feel a healthy mean hive is better than no hive. Any thoughts. Love watching your videos. Envy how you work your hives. I am a newer beekeeper.
Don, many of the queens coming out of Georgia from package producers in the last several years have been of poor quality, ie non laying, slow to build, I have even a few leave the hive a day or two after introduction, I have witnessed them leaving, some soon return after several days, so I am assuming they are leaving on a mating flight. About a 65% survival rate or lower. Can you tell me what is the reason for this ? Are they just to busy, trying to keep up with demand ?
Don, I have noticed that Nucs do not have screened boards, and that they appear to be intentional confined.. Is there a deliberate reason or science behind this? Thank.
smoothbrother69 No !!!! I live in Texas All my hives are feral hives and I have 8 . That I have caught this year . 2 of them will eat you alive . But they are my best producers and the highest bee count . You will have at least a few fly at your face every time you lift a frame. No matter how gentle you are. Although the last week they where in a good mood . Maybe they are getting used to me. I try to work boxes every 10 days . You can however catch and mark queens.
Will you do a video on how to properly breed bees so that they are gentle. Everybody tells u how to make queens and splits but nobody tells you why their making a queen or splits off that particular hive. How do u keep them from being inbred and becoming mean? I guess what I'm asking is how do u breed bees?, because it seems to be working. Thanks
Wow, you just reach down and pick her up like it is that easy. If I try and catch a queen, being as gentle as possible, she is crushed. And if I dumped my bees out like that, my eyes would be swollen shut from the stings.
a few stings,no big deal at all,it happens, the trick is not to get multiple stings at the same time,i get 1 or 2 almost everytime i tend,i've never suited up in my life,i've worn the vail when i first started years ago, now,i'm imuned to them...the hornets are a different story,lol....
putting the workers in first wouldn't be a good idea. they sting so you would be watching out for that and not keeping your eye on not hurting the queen. at least your thinking=lol Don
here is a example of no matter hw many queens youcatch some just don't want to leave home=lol as I am teaching some things are staged and I make the best of it.=just getting old Don
Great vid Don. Keep em' comin. I always learn something new from your videos.

Great work Don!
Your videos are like a graduate school class in beekeeping.
thanks for the heads up

Don, how do you pick up worker bees without being stung?
Hi Don thanks for the video. What brand of florescent paint do you use. I have a hard time seeing the queen witn normal marking pens
I got a question, i see how you throw frames around don't you crutch bees that way?
what type of fluorescent pain do you use? can i use oil based or?
Great video Fat!
glad you ask that,I'll do more with close ups. that one was a buyer of queens watching me cage his queens.
Don
p.s. he shot the video
good job
What kind of paint do you use

Dan Bollett better they mate in your area than Georgia.
Know one makes a better queen than you from your local area

I see it is a florescent.. but what exactly is it? Paint?
Don; What type and brand of paint are you using? You're not using the handy dandy pens they sell. How do I cheap out?
This problem is widespread in northern Ohio. I am 60 years old, never to old to learn, I started keeping bees when I was 13, please advise.
just a question what type of paint do you use and the brand
Whatever the hardware store has cheap! Usually something that has been mixed wrong

What is your thinking on clipping wings
I don't clip wing it serves no purpose and bees will replace her,if a hive swarms it don't prevent it
Thank saw on another channel wanted to see what others though
How can you handle those bees without any protection?
stingless bees
@@captain776 I need to aquire a couple of swarms first
i wonder if u can do this with African bees.

How about putting the bees in before the queen??Thanks great Vids!!!!!

you just select the best queens to mate from

get some gentle bees
I mark the frame 1 to tell me how old that frame is and 2 so I don't have too much paint on marking pen.
Don
in 50 plus yrs I don;t recall a queen stinging me. but they do sting.
Don
